Pirates finish third in league
The Prairie baseball team finished their regular season with 3 games this past week. On Tuesday, May 2 they split a doubleheader with Kendrick, winning the first game 9-8 and losing the second 5-15. On Monday, May 8 they played Lapwai in a game to determine third place in the league standings and won 11-5 at Lewiston.
The Pirates finished the season with a third place finish in the White Pine League and hosted Clearwater Valley Tuesday in a District play-in game that also amounted to a State play-in game as the winner qualified for State.
Game 1 Vs. Kendrick
With their first game win against Kendrick, Prairie clinched at least fourth in the final league standings which means they would get to host a District play-in game on Tuesday May 9.Senior Jon Halligan makes a catch at second base on senior night against Kendrick.
Freshman Sam Mager pitched a gutty game for the Pirates going all 6 innings and keeping the Pirates close.
It didn’t start well as Kendrick put 3 hits together in the first inning and scored 2 runs. After shutting out Prairie in the bottom of the inning they added another run on 2 singles in the second.
Prairie got things going in their half of the second thanks to wildness by the Kendrick pitcher. Jace Perrin and Sam Mager were both hit by pitches to open the inning. A single down the left field line by Dereck Arnzen loaded the bases. Owen Anderson then singled up the middle to score 2 runs. Jon Halligan was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Luke Schwartz grounded back to the pitcher for a forceout at home. Jake Stubbers was then walked to force in a run. Brandon Anderson grounded to short for an error that scored Halligan for the go-ahead run. Nick Mager was then hit by a pitch to force in another run. Perrin grounded to third but the shortstop dropped the throw for another error and 2 more runs scored as Prairie took a 7-3 lead.
Neither team scored in the third but Kendrick had their own big inning in the fourth. 4 singles and an error led to 5 Kendrick runs as the Tigers took back the lead at 7-8.
Prairie was able to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth. Schwartz worked a walk to lead off the inning and stole second. After an out, Brandon Anderson singled with Schwartz going to third. After another out Prairie ran a delayed double steal that worked. Anderson headed for second and stopped, looking to draw a throw. He did and Schwartz headed for home, beating the throw for the tying run while Anderson went on to second.
Mager worked around a 2-out walk and an error in the top of the sixth as catcher Brandon Anderson threw out a runner attempting to steal third to end the inning.
Since the games were supposed to be 5 innings each to get them in before dark, the game now went to “extra” innings. Mager, running on fumes at this point, managed to get through the top of the sixthl allowing a 1-out single but then getting a ground ball out and a strikeout.
In the bottom of the sixth Damian Forsmann, who had gone in for Halligan earlier, drew a walk on 4 pitches. Schwartz also walked. Stubbers grounded to short and Kendrick got Forsmann at home leaving runners on first and third with 1 out. One might have expected Kendrick to then walk Brandon Anderson and set up a force at any base, including home, but they chose instead to pitch to him and Anderson singled up the middle to score Schwartz with the winning run.
Prairie had just 4 hits in the game. Brandon Anderson had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Owen Anderson had a single and 2 RBI and Arnzen had a single. Perrin had 2 RBI while Stubbers and Nick Mager each had an RBI.
Sam Mager pitch 6 innings allowing 10 hits and 8 runs with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
The difference on offense was the free passes. Mager walked 1 while Kendrick pitches hit 4 batters and walked 5 others. 5 of those 9 batters wound up scoring for Prairie.
Kendrick 2 1 0 5 0 0—8 10 3
Prairie      0 7 0 1 0 1—9   4 3
Game 2 vs. Kendrick
The second game also saw a big second inning by the home team as Kendrick scored 11 runs in the second inning to pull away for a 10-run win.
Prairie scored first in the game as Perrin double to left with 2 outs, went to third on a balk and scored on a single to left by Arnzen.
Kendrick came back with 2 in the bottom of the first on a double, hit batter and 2 errors.
Prairie got 2 runners on in the second but couldn’t score. In the bottom of the second Kendrick strung together 5 straight hits to start the inning. An error, a walk, another hit and another walk and Brandon Anderson’s outing on the mound was over. Arnzen took over on the mound and gave up 3 more walks and a hit before getting out of the inning.
Kendrick added another run in the third on 3 straight singles.
Prairie got back on the scoreboard in the fourth as Brandon Anderson led off the inning with a double. Carson Forsman followed with a single up the middle. Mick Mager double in Anderson. Sam Mager singled in Forsman. Nick scored on a goundout by Owen Anderson and Schwartz singled home Sam to cut the deficit to 5-14.
Kendrick added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Prairie had 8 hits in the game. Sam Mager had 2 singles and an RBI. Nick Mager had an RBI double. Perrin and Brandon Anderson each had a double. Schwartz and Arnzen each had a single with an RBI and Forsman had a single.
Brandon Anderson pitched 1+ innings allowing 12 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 1 hit batsman. Arnzen pitched 2 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Owen Anderson pitched the final inning allowing 1 run on no hits with 2 hit batsmen and 1 walk.
Prairie     1   0 0 4 0—  5   8 3
Kendrick 2 11 1 1 x—15 11 0
Vs. Lapwai at Lewiston
The Pirates had already clinched a chance to host a District play-in game but by beating Lapwai they earned the right to play 6th place C.V. rather than 5th place Kendrick.
The Pirates used 4 different pitchers in the game with no one going more than 2 innings, which also kept all of them eligible pitch-count wise for the Tuesday play-in.
Spencer Schumacher started the game in his first action since splitting open the webbing on his pitching hand between the ring and little finger against Troy. He gave up 1 run in his 2 innings and Prairie trailed 0-1 going into the third.
Lapwai also used several pitchers with the same strategy of keeping their best arms eligible for the play-in game on Tuesday. Prairie didn’t score on Lapwai’s starter but roughed up his successor as they scored 5 runs in the third to take the lead. They added 4 more in the fourth and 2 in the fifth to take an 11-2 lead.
Perrin pitched the second and third innings and also allowed just 1 run.  Brandon Anderson came on in the fifth and allowed 2 runs and Arnzen pitched the final inning, allowing 1 run.
Prairie had 8 hits in the game and took advantage of 4 Lapwai errors. Stubbers led the hitting attack with a double and 2 singles. Catcher Sam Mager added 3 singles while Nick Mager and Perrin each had a single.
Prairie finished their league schedule with an 8-6 record. They are 9-8 overall.
