ends Prairie's season
The Prairie baseball team’s season came to an abrupt end Tuesday, May 9, in a district play-in game against Clearwater Valley at Cottonwood. Prairie led 7-1 going into the top of the sixth inning when everything that could go wrong did and they wound up losing 7-22. 
Freshman Sam Mager started on the mound for the Pirates and pitched the first two innings allowing 2 singles and a walk while striking out 4. Prairie was unable to score in the first inning but scored 3 in the second. Nick Mager led off the inning and reached on an error. He stole second and after an out, Sam Mager singled to left to score big brother Nick. After a second out, Spencer Schumacher crushed a hanging curve ball over the fence in right center for a 2-run homer to make it 3-0. Schumacher took over on the mound in the third and struck out the side. In the bottom of the third Prairie added 3 more runs for a 6-0 lead. Luke Schwartz reached on an error and Jake Stubbers beat out a bunt single. A passed ball moved up the runners and Schwartz scored when Brandon Anderson hit an infield grounder with Schwartz beating the throw home. An error on the play brought home Stubbers. Nick Mager reached on another error with Anderson going to third. Jace Perrin then grounded into a forceout with Anderson scoring. C.V. got their first baserunner against Schumacher since the first league game between them when a runner reached on a third strike passed ball. Schumacher then picked the runner off first. An error and a walk led to a couple more baserunners but a strikeout got Schumacher out of the inning with no runs scored. In the fifth C.V. picked up their first run. An infield hit, balk and wild pitch put a runner on third with nobody out. Schumacher then threw the baserunner out at home on a roller toward third. After a strikeout, C.V. got a run in on a double. Prairie answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning against a new pitcher. Anderson walked, stole second, then stole third and scored when the pitcher’s throw to third got away. Then came the ugly top of the sixth. C.V.’s leadoff hitter singled. After a strikeout, Schumacher seemed to suddenly lose his command of the strike zone as a hit batsman and two walks forced in a run. A groundout to short brought in another run making it 7-3 with 2 outs. The next hitter popped up behind second base and the ball was misplayed for an error to reload the bases. Instead of getting out of the inning with the lead what followed was hit, hit, error, hit and a hit batsman. At that point Schumacher was pulled in favor of Perrin who gave up a walk and a hit followed by another error as C.V. plated 12 runs in the inning, 10 after there were 2 outs, to take a 7-13 lead. In the bottom of the inning Prairie loaded the bases as Sam Mager beat out an infield hit and Schumacher and Owen Anderson both walked. A strikeout and a pop-up to first ended the inning with all 3 runners left on base. C.V. then put up 9 more runs in the 7th inning to put the game away and end the Pirates’ season. Prairie had just 4 hits in the game as they took advantage of walks and errors for many of their runs. Sam Mager had 2 singles and an RBI while Schumacher had a homer with 2 RBI. Stubbers had the other hit. Brandon Anderson and Perrin each added an RBI. CV. pounded out 15 hits, 11 of those in the final 2 innings. Sam Mager gave up no runs on 2 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts in 2 innings. Schumacher gave up 11 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 2 hit batsman while striking out 7 in 3 2/3 innings. Perrin gave up 3 runs on 2 hits with 1 walk in 1/3 of an inning. Brandon Anderson gave up 8 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk and 1 hit batsman in an inning. Prairie had 6 errors in the game with 5 of those coming in the final 2 innings. Prairie’s season ends with a 9-9 record. C.V. 0 0 0 0 1 12 9—22 15 3 Prairie 0 3 3 0 1 0 0— 7 4 6
Luke Schwartz heads for third while behind him Jake Stubbers heads for second during the play-in game against C.V. Pirates are Academic State Champions They may not be going to the State Tournament for the reason they wanted to but the Prairie Baseball Team will still be going to pick up a trophy as they were named 1-A Academic Champions for Baseball. The Prairie team had a combined grade point average of 3.520.
