Students release steelhead
On May 15, the Agricultural Class from Nezperce and Highland, 4th grade students from Highland and Prairie, and 7th and 8th grade students rom Summit Academy completed their “Hatchery in the Classroom” program with the release of about 300 (2 to 3 inch long) steelhead into Lawyers Creek.
Jill Olson, U S Fish and Wildlife Service, Dworshak Fisheries, delivered 103 steelhead eggs to each classroom in March.  The classes, with the assistance of their teachers, monitored the water temperature and clarity.  When the fish eggs hatched the students took charge of feeding them in addition to the monitoring duties.
The LSCD received a grant in 2013 from the Nez Perce Tribe to purchase aquariums for the schools as part of their ongoing Information and Education programs. This hatchery project demonstrates the commitment the Lewis Soil Conservation District (LSCD) has towards improving fish habitat and water quality.
The LSCD wishes to thank Kyle Stapleton, Pam Turnbull, Danette Horrocks, Becky Higgins, Kristi Bruegeman, Kim Uptmor for their vigilance in rearing the fish in their classrooms, also thank you to Jill Olson for their support in making the project such a success.
