26 turned out for football
The Prairie football team has 26 players turned out for the 2017 season which gets underway this Friday at 7 p.m. at Genesee.
This game could be an early indicator of who the league champion might be as Genesee looked strong against Kendrick last week and is the league coaches’ pick for first with Prairie second and Lapwai third.
Prairie will be led by seniors Jake Stubbers, Nick Mager, Hunter Chaffee, Jayce Huling, Jace Perrin and Dereck Arnzen.
Huling was a force on the defensive line and will also play offensive line. Arnzen and Perrin both started on both lines last year. Chaffee was one of the top receivers in the league and also played defensive back. Stubbers started at defensive back and got some offensive reps. He may see more action this ear at receiver along with Mager and could fill in at running back as well.
Juniors are Spencer Schumacher, Caleb McWilliams, Michael Schwartz, Carson Schmidt and GuihermeAcciardi. Schumacher started at quarterback and on defensive line last season. Schmidt also played a lot on both offensive and defensive line. McWilliams played well at linebacker in relief last year and will likely start there this year. He will also see a lot of time at running back.
Sophomores are Derik Shears, Damian Forsmann, Owen Anderson, Sam Mager, Hayden Uhlenkott, Garrett Bunce, Reid Uptmor and Carson Forsman. Shears stepped in a receiver last season and played well and should see time there and at linebacker. Forsmann is currently the backup quarterback. Uhlenkott saw some varsity time in the lines last year.
Freshmen are Tristan Staneart, Dalton Ross, Cole Schlader, Dean Johnson, John Gehring, Cole Martin and Matt Seubert, a Summit student.
At press time Travis Mader was still working on a JV schedule and thinks he has as many as 7 games lined up even though only 2 other local 1A schools appear to have enough turned out for a JV program.
Head coach Ryan Hasselstrom along with assistants Teel Bruner and Matt Elven all return this year.
Prairie will be looking to make their fifth straight state tournament appearance. Like last year the top 3 league finishers will make it to the 8-team state tournament field.
Genesee to have military appreciation night at football game
Genesee will be holding a military appreciation ceremony prior to Friday’s football game with Prairie.
Active military personnel or veterans from the Cottonwood area are invited to take part as well.
At 6:30 p.m. they will ask all veterans and active military personnel to go to the south end zone where there will be an inflatable National Guard Helmet set up. At 6:45 the Prairie football team along with any of our local military or veterans will walk through the helmet out to the hash marks on their side of the field and stand between the 40 yard lines facing the middle of the field. After that the Genesee team and military personnel and veterans from Genesee will proceed through the helmet and line up on the hashmarks on their side of the field.
After a few words from Genesee’s athletic director the UI ROTC will present the colors and the GHS Pep Band will play the “Star Spangled Banner.” Following the Anthem and after the colors are retired, both teams will get to shake hands with all the veterans and military personnel, then return to their sidelines for the starting lineups.
Also, Idahosports.com will be streaming the game live on the Internet.
