Pirates lose at Genesee
The Prairie football team scored on their first play from scrimmage but it was all downhill from there as they lost 6-36 at Genesee Friday, Sept. 1 in their season opener.
Prairie received the opening kickoff which Jake Stubbers returned 17 yards to the Prairie 25. On the first play from scrimmage Prairie ran play-action where quarterback Spencer Schumacher faked a handoff then stepped back and threw deep over the middle to Derik Shears, who had sPrairie got off to a great start at Genesee as Derik Shears catches a pass that he turned into a 75 yard scoring play.lipped past the defenders who bit on the play fake. Shears caught the ball at about the Genesee 40 and easily beat the defenders to the end zone. Schumacher’s try from the 2-pointer was stopped just short as Prairie led 6- just 13 seconds into the game.
Genesee came right back with a 66 yard scoring drive that took 10 plays and saw quarterback Kolby Moser score from the 10 on a 4th and 2 play. Moser passed to running back Edward Becker for the 2-pointer that gave Genesee the lead.
Prairie picked up a first down on a fourth and inches on their next possession but then turned the ball over on an interception the following play.
Genesee moved the ball down to the Prairie but Stubbers sacked Moser for a 10 yard loss and a holding penalty on the next play forced Genesee to punt on a fourth and 27.
Prairie had to punt the ball right back and Genesee went 47 yards in 3 plays to add to their lead. Becker scored from the 7 and Moser then ran in the 2-pointer for a 6-16 lead for the Bulldogs.
Prairie had to punt again but stopped Genesee on a fourth down and 12 from the Prairie 42.
A 19 yard gain by Stubbers put the Pirates into Genesee territory but the drive ended when Schumacher’s pass was tipped and then intercepted by Moser at the Genesee 25.
Genesee moved down to the Prairie 32 where a holding penalty was followed by 3 incomplete passes. On fourth and long, Moser was sacked by Schumacher for a 9 yard loss to give Prairie the ball at their own 41.
Prairie went to a hurry-up offense as it was late in the half. Schumacher completed passes of 16 yards to Stubbers and 21 yards to Shears to move the ball to the Genesee 22.
After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Schumacher picked up 8 yards to the Genesee 14.
Then disaster struck as Schumacher hit a Genesee helmet on the follow through of an incomplete pass to Stubbers. Schumacher wound up having to sit out the rest of the game with a possible broken bone in his throwing hand.
Damian Forsmann came in at quarterback for a fourth and 2 play and his pass to Shears missed. A touchdown there would have made it either a 2 or 4 point game at the half. Instead Prairie was still down 10 and minus their starting quarterback.
Genesee received the second half kickoff and moved to the Prairie 34 where the Pirate defense stiffened. Mike Schwartz tackled running back Coy Stout for no gain and on the next play Jayce Huling caught Moser in the backfield on a keeper for a 7 yard loss. That led to a Genesee punt.
A big loss for the Pirates in their opener came on this play. After throwing a pass, Spencer Schumacher’s throwing hand connected with #22’s helmet, knocking him out for the rest of the game and maybe beyond.Prairie couldn’t move the ball and had to punt. Genesee answered with a 3-play, 48 yard drive as Moser scored from the 28 on what started as a quarterback sneak. He burst through the line and was gone.
Prairie then gave the ball right back on an interception and Genesee took 3 plays to score from the 39 with Becker covering the final 21 yards. It appeared he fumbled the ball before crossing the goal-line with the ball going out of bounds in the end zone but the referees huddled and said he crossed the goal line before losing the ball.
Each team fumbled the ball away on each of their next two possessions. Jace Perrin recovered the first Genesee fumble and Nick Mager recovered the second.
On Mager’s recovery, his helmet was ripped off and Genesee was flagged for a 15 yard facemask penalty on the play, giving Prairie the ball at the Genesee 36.
Unfortunately the offense was unable to get a first down as Forsmann’s pass completion to Caleb McWilliams on fourth and 6 came up 2 yards short.
After the teams traded punts, Genesee put together their final scoring drive. On a first and goal from the 3, Genesee’s runner was tackled for a 7 yard loss and Prairie’s coaches thought there should’ve been a crackback blocking penalty called on the play as well. Two plays later Becker carried from the 3 but fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line. Genesee recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. Moser’s 2-pointer made it 36-6 with 3:40 left to play.
Genesee’s defense pretty much shut down the Pirates after the opening play, holding them to just 90 more yards of offense after the opening 75 yard play.
Stubbers gained 20 yards on 14 carries and McWilliams added 15 on 5 carries as Prairie totaled just 30 yards rushing on 28 attempts.
Schumacher completed 3 of 11 passes for 112 yards with 2 interceptions while Forsmann was 3 for 11 with 1 interception for 23 yards.
Shears caught 2 passes for 96 yards. Mager caught 2 for 19. Stubbers caught 1 for 16 and McWilliams caught 1 for 4 yards.
Huling led the way on defense with 12 tackles, 3 for loss, but also left the game with an apparent broken arm while making a tackle midway through the third quarter. Stubbers added 9 tackles, Owen Anderson 6, Shears 5½, Perrin 5, McWilliams 4, Mager 3½, Carson Schmidt 2 ½, Schumacher 2, Schwartz 1 ½ and Hayden Uhlenkott 1. Perrin and Mager each had a fumble recovery and Huling, Stubbers and Schumacher each had a sack.
Prairie is now 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play. They play defending 1A-D2 champion Salmon River this Monday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.,  in their home opener. This was postponed from Friday, Sept. 8 due to smoky conditions.
