Pirates rout Council
The Prairie football team routed the Council Lumberjacks 60-8 at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 15 in a game that was called at halftime.
Due to injured players and the lopsided score the Lumberjacks opted not to play the second half.Lineman Jace Perrin, 51, got to score a touchdown late in the Council game on a tackle eligible play. Also shown is Dereck Arnzen, 78.
Prairie received the opening kickoff with Derik Shears returning the ball 25 yards to the 50 yard line.
After a pair of runs by Jake Stubbers and a 5-yard penalty against Council, Prairie had moved to the 15.
An illegal blocking penalty set the Pirates back to the 22 but Caleb McWilliams burst through the middle for 15 yards to set up third and 1 at the 6 and Stubbers pushed his way down to the 1 for a first and goal. Shears scored on the next play and then caught the 2-point pass from Damian Forsmann to make it 8-0.
Council was able to pick up a first down on their opening possession and move to Prairie’s side of the 50 to the 41 where they faced fourth and 8. A bad snap led to a 7 yard loss with Dereck Arnzen making the tackle as Prairie took over at their own 48.
A slant to Shears gained 18 yards on first down. After a short run, Forsmann connected with Nick Mager for 20 yards to move the ball down to the 12. On the next play Stubbers burst up the middle for the touchdown. Forsmann passed to McWilliams for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Council was unable to move the ball and had to punt. Arnzen was able to get a hand on the ball and it went just 5 yards downfield where McWilliams caught the ball and took it 40 yards to the end zone. This time the conversion pass fell incomplete but Prairie still led 22-0.
Prairie got the ball right back when Hayden Uhlenkott intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards to the Council 10 yard line.
Forsmann attempted to pass to Hunter Chaffee, in his first action of the season, but the pass was intercepted at the 2.
Council failed to move the ball and wound up punting from their 1. A holding penalty on the punt return had the Pirates taking over at the Council 28.
Stubbers picked up 6 and 10 yards on a couple of runs to set up first down at the 12. On fourth and 1 from the 3, Forsmann managed to push his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak. He then passed to Owen Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 30-0 with 24 seconds still remaining in the first quarter.
On the second play of the second quarter Council avoided the shutout when quarterback Brett Rosengrant connected with Lance Nichols deep down the left side for what turned into an 82 yard scoring play. Council added the 2-pointer to make it 30-8.
Council’s onside kick try was recovered by McWilliams at the Prairie 40.
Two plays later Council intercepted a pass by Forsmann but were called for roughing the passer. That gave Prairie the ball back at the Council 31.
On the next play Chaffee caught his first pass of the season and took it 31 yards down the right side for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Prairie extended the lead to 36-8.
Council turned the ball over on downs at their own 45 after a bad snap on fourth down. A 33 yard pass from Forsmann to Chaffee set up a first and goal at the 2 with Stubbers going in on the next play. Forsmann ran in the 2-pointer to make it 44-8.
Council again turned the ball over on downs on a fake punt from their own 36 with Prairie making the tackled at the 32. On the next play Forsmann hit Mager over the middle on a slant and Mager went the distance for the touchdown. Stubbers ran in the 2-pointer to make it 52-8.
Another turnover on downs at the Council 23 led to the final score of the game. On fourth and 2 Prairie ran their JP special. Jace Perrin lined up in a tackle eligible formation and caught a pass for 15 yards and a touchdown. Stubbers again ran in the 2-pointer to make it 60-8 with 1:57 left in the half.
Council got into Prairie territory on their possession and had fourth and 9 from the Prairie 39 with time left on the clock. They elected to just let time run out and then decided to call the game. The mercy rule this year was changed to 40 points and like last year gives the team losing by more than 40 the option to call the game at any point from halftime on.
Prairie wound up gaining 130 yards rushing on 20 attempts. Stubbers had 66 yards on 9 carries and McWilliams had 46 on 4 carries.
Forsmann completed 6 of 10 passes with 1 interception for 149 yards. Chaffee caught 2 for 64, Mager 2 for 52, Shears 1 for 18 and Perrin 1 for 15.
Council’s offense was basically Rosengrant to Nichols as Nichols caught 4 of Rosengrant’s 5 completions for 143 of Council’s 146 yards passing. Prairie held Council to -16 yards rushing on 18 attempts.
Shears led the defense with 6 ½ tackles. Stubbers had 5 tackles. McWilliams had 4, Perrin 3, Arnzen 2 plus a blocked punt. Michael Schwartz and Owen Anderson each had 2 tackles. Uhlenkott had 1½ plus an interception. Mager and Garrett Bunce each added 1 tackle.
Prairie is now 2-1 on the season and gets back into league play this Friday with a game at Clearwater Valley at 7 p.m.
