Pirates win 64-28 at C.V.
The Prairie Pirates overcame 4 turnovers to win 64-28 over Clearwater Valley at Kooskia Friday, September 22 for their first league win of the season.
The game didn’t start well as C.V. intercepted an underthrown pass on Prairie’s first play from scrimmage. On the very next play, C.V.’s Jace Summers went 33 yards for a touchdown. TycePfefferkorn added the 2-pointer and Prairie faced a quick 0-8 deficit.Nick Mager and Caleb McWilliams combine to tackle a C.V. ballcarrier.
Prairie had better luck the second time they had the ball as Jake Stubbers picked up 13 yards on a run and followed with a 16 yard pass reception. The drive stalled out though at the C.V. 28.
C.V. picked up a first down but a sack by Spencer Schumacher for an 8 yard loss led to a punt. Schumacher was in his first action, on defense only, after breaking a finger on his throwing hand in the first game of the season.
Nick Mager returned the punt 28 yards to the C.V. 31. Prairie moved down to the 19 where Damian Forsmann connected with Mager over the middle for a 19 yard touchdown. Forsmann then passed to Derik Shears for the 2-pointer to tie the game at 8-8.
Prairie got the ball right back when Pfefferkorn made a bad pitch on a running play and Shears recovered the ball at the C.V. 17.
3 plays later Stubbers went up the middle for a 2 yard touchdown and then added the 2-pointer for Prairie’s first lead at 16-8 with 1:42 left in the first quarter.
A sack for an 11 yard loss by Caleb McWilliams led to another C.V. punt.
After picking up a first down on a roughing the passer call that negated an interception, Prairie gave away the ball anyway. The center snap went over Forsmann’s head and C.V.’s Lane Schilling picked up the ball on the C.V. 40 and went 60 yards for a touchdown. C.V. added the 2-pointer to tie the game at 16-16.
C.V. tried an onside kick but McWilliams recovered at the Prairie 39. Prairie gave the ball back anyway on the next play as they made it 2 straight turnovers with Summers intercepting Forsmann’s pass at midfield and returning it to the Prairie 25.
The defense came through and forced C.V. to turn the ball over on downs at the Prairie 28.
Prairie then took back the lead on 4 straight running plays. Stubbers picked up 8 with a 15 yard personal foul penalty added on. Stubbers then gained 13, McWilliams 11 and Shears finished off the drive with a 25 yard counter play to the left for the touchdown. The 2-point try came up short but Prairie was back on top 22-16.
Prairie then got the ball right back when Pfefferkorn fumbled with Stubbers recovering at the C.V. 4 yard line. McWilliams scored the first of his 5 touchdowns on the next play. Stubbers ran in the 2-pointer to make it 30-16.
C.V. looked to answer as they moved the ball down to the Prairie 19 before Pfefferkorn fumbled again with Michael Schwartz making the recovery at the Prairie 21.
A 49 yard catch and run by Stubbers, who broke a couple tackles along the way, set Prairie up at the C.V. 18. Stubbers then ran for 15 yards to set up first and goal and McWilliams scored touchdown #2 on the next play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie now led 36-16 with 1:00 left in the half.
C.V. received the second half kickoff and were forced to punt. Prairie took over at their own 44. 7 plays later McWilliams scored touchdown #3 from 8 yards out. Caleb McWilliams scores a 2-pointer. Prairie moved the ball out to the 34 before turning the ball over on downs.
The defense held and Prairie got the ball right back 4 players later at the 33.
McWilliams burst through the middle on the next play for 28 yards to put the ball at the C.V. 39. After 5 more running plays Prairie had the ball at the C.V. 25. Shears took a pitch to the right then cut back across the field before getting tackled at the 3 yard line. McWilliams scored TD #4 on the next play. Shears ran in the 2-pointer to make it 50-16.

C.V. had to punt after a holding penalty wiped out a pass play that would’ve picked up a first down. Prairie took over at the 49 after Shears took the ball from Hunter Chaffee on a reverse on the punt return and went 14 yards.
After an incomplete pass, Prairie went to 6 straight running plays with each gaining at least 5 yards. Owen Anderson capped off the drive with a 16 yard touchdown run. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 64-28 with just 2:13 to play.
