Pirates win Homecoming game
For the second straight week the Prairie football team overcame a bad start and came away with a big win. This time 38-12 over Kamiah in their Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 29 at Cottonwood.Hunter Chaffee is about to catch a pass at about the 7 yard line and then score a touchdown.
Kamiah won the toss and deferred. Prairie chose to receive and Kamiah kicked off into a stiff wind coming out of the west. The ball took a crazy bounce back toward the kicking team and Kamiah wound up recovering at the Prairie 38.
Kamiah then managed to overcome a couple of called penalties and took advantage of another that should have been called as they scored with quarterback Kaleb Oatman accounting for most of the yardage, including the final 13 on a keeper around right end. The 2-point try failed, which became a theme of the night.
Prairie then took advantage of the wind in an exchange of punts. Hunter Chaffee’s punt from the Prairie 29 traveled 63 yards to the Kamiah 8 with a 7 yard return. Kamiah’s punt 3 plays later, traveled just 6 yards beyond the line of scrimmage with Prairie taking over at the Kamiah 25.
Five plays later Owen Anderson went in from the 4 yard line to tie the game at 6-6. Prairie’s 2-point pass attempt fell incomplete.
Kamiah answered right back with an 8-play, 75 yard scoring drive. The big plays were a pair of passes that gained 35 and 30 yards. Oatman finished the drive with a touchdown run from 3 yards out on the second play of the second quarter. Again the 2-point try failed.
With the wind now at their backs, Kamiah stayed with a short kickoff attempt that Nick Mager caught at the Prairie 36 and returned 4 yards.
Damian Forsmann passed to Hunter Chaffee for 10 yards and a personal foul penalty against Kamiah added another 15.
Jake Stubbers converted a fourth and 2 play for a first down then picked up 21 yards on the next play to set up first and goal at the 1. Forsmann scored on the next play on a quarterback sneak to again tie the score. Again the 2-point try failed, leaving it at 12-12.
The two teams exchanged punts with Kamiah getting benefit of the win as their punt went 41 yards and Prairie’s just 11 as Kamiah took over at the Prairie 36.
Kamiah picked up a first down then had problems with the snap from center in the shotgun formation. Oatman got tackled by Anderson for a 13 yard loss on one bad snap and then fumbled the ball away with Spencer Schumacher recovering at the Prairie 41 on the next play.
Two big passes to Chaffee gave Prairie their first lead of the game. A slant pattern gained 17 yards and a first down at the Kamiah 35 and on the next play, Chaffee faked the slant and went deep with Forsmann hitting him in full stride for a 35 yards scoring play. The conversion try failed again but Prairie now had an 18-12 lead with 3:30 left in the first half.
Kamiah had to punt and the punt wound up going straight up in the air with Prairie taking over at the Kamiah 49.
A pass to Mager gained 18 yards to the 28 but 2 plays later Forsman tried to connect with Mager again but threw the ball too high and it was intercepted at the 19. Kamiah’s Luke Snyder returned the interception to the Prairie 30 where he was finally tackled by Carson Schmidt.
Kamiah threw 4 straight incomplete passes as the half came to an end.
Kamiah received the second half kickoff but had to punt the ball away. Mager returned the punt 21 yards to the Kamiah 49.
You can’t get any more wide open than Owen Anderson was on this touchdown pass. Prairie ran what looked like an option sweep to the left and Anderson went out to the right side.A pass to Derik Shears went for 14 yards then it was 6 straight running plays with Stubbers finishing off the drive with a 7 yard run for a touchdown that made it 24-12 when the 2-point try again failed.
A sack for a 5 yard loss by Spencer Schumacher led to another Kamiah punt with Prairie taking over at the Kamiah 44.
4 plays later, Prairie ran a misdirection play action to the left and Anderson sneaked out to the right and was wide open for a 31 yard scoring play. Again the 2 point try failed but Prairie was now up 30-12.
Another Kamiah punt saw Prairie take over at their own 41. Chaffee picked up 7 yards on a reverse play but a botched pitchout on the next play led to a 10 yard loss. Facing third and 13, Forsmann again connected with Chaffee deep down the field for a 62 yard scoring play. Prairie finally scored a 2-point conversion as Forsmann pass to Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 38-12 with 1:48 left in the third quarter.
Another botched snap by the Kubs led to a 15 yard loss and another punt.
Prairie gave it right back though 2 plays later when Anderson picked up 30 yards on a run but had the ball knocked loose as he was tackled.
Kamiah got a 25 yard gain on a pass play to move to the Prairie 27. Another bad snap led to a 17 yard loss but most of that got wiped out on a helmet-to-helmet penalty on the tackle. Kamiah couldn’t capitalize though as a holding penalty forced them to eventually put the ball away from their own 49.
Prairie had to punt the ball back after a false start penalty when they were lined up to go for it on fourth and 1.
Oatman picked up 27 yards on a run to the Prairie 34 but another bad snap cost them. Schumacher zeroed in on Oatman who tried to retrieve the ball and as he went to make the tackle, knocked the ball loose again and wound up with it falling right to him for the recovery.
Prairie picked up a first down and then was able to run out the clock.
For the first time this season Prairie gained more yardage passing than running. Forsmann completed 8 of 14 passes with 1 interception, for 196 yards. Chaffee caught 5 for 133 and 2 touchdowns. Anderson caught 1 for 31 and a touchdown. Mager caught 1 for 18 and shears 1 for 14.
Prairie gained 169 yards rushing on 38 attempts. Stubbers had 68 yards on 17 carries with Anderson adding 63 on 10 carries. Forsmann had 23 yards on 5 carries, Shears 8 yards on 5 carries and Chaffee 7 yards on 1 carry. Notably missing is Caleb McWilliams who had to sit out the game with an injury but could be back this week.
Kamiah had 145 yards of offense but were held to just 7 net yards in the second half. 10 of their 25 second half plays went for negative yardage.
The Kubs had 32 yards rushing on 45 attempts. Oatman had 53 on 26 carries. Oatman completed 6 of 14 passes for 113 yards.
Stubbers led the defense with 7½ tackles. Jace Perrin had 7 tackles. Schmidt had 6. Anderson had 5 with a sack. Schumacher had 4½ with 2 fumble recoveries and a sack. Chaffee and Jayce Huling, in his first action after an injury in the season opener, had 4 each. Mager and Michael Schwartz had 2 each.
Prairie is now 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play. Their next game is a league game at Troy this Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
