Pirates win big at Troy
The Prairie football overcame a slow start for the third straight game and wound up winning big, 78-32, at Troy Friday, Oct. 6.
Prairie looked like they were going to have a good start as they took the opening kickoff and moved the ball from their own 48 down to the Troy 10 yard line. 
At that point a fumble gave Troy the ball at the 15.Jace Perrin makes a tackle while Owen Anderson tries to take the ball away from a Troy runner.
Troy had to punt and Nick Mager muffed the punt before recovering and returning it 6 yards to the Prairie 36.
Damian Forsmann then completed a pass to Hunter Chaffee who gained 26 yards before fumbling the ball right back to Troy at the Troy 38.
Troy was able to take the ball and score to take a 0-6 lead. Prairie stopped the 2-point try short of the goal line.
Prairie had to punt the ball away on their third possession with Troy taking over at their own 45.
The Trojans moved to the Prairie 24 before Jace Perrin sacked quarterback Rhett Sandquist, who fumbled with Troy recovering for an 18 yard loss. Prairie wound up taking over on downs at their own 42.
The Pirates ended the first quarter with a 32 yard pass from Forsmann to Chaffee to put the ball on the Troy 29.
Once they got past the first quarter, Prairie stopped fumbling the ball and exploded on offense.
Five plays into the second quarter Jake Stubbers took a pitch around right end for 23 yards to the 1 yard line. Forsmann scored on the next play to tie the game and Caleb McWilliams, back in action after missing the previous game with an injury, bulldozed into the end zone for the 2 point play to give Prairie the lead.
The lead was short-lived though as Isaac Stoner received the kickoff, threw a lateral across the field to Sam Taff, who raced up the right sideline for an 80 yard kickoff return touchdown. Prairie again stopped the 2-pointer but trailed again at 8-12.
Chaffee returned the ensuing kickoff 27 yards to the Troy 48. Prairie needed just 6 plays to score their second touchdown. Forsmann picked up 12 on a keeper and McWilliams burst through the middle for 31 to the Troy 3 yard line. Stubbers scored on the next play to put Prairie on top for good at 14-12 with 8:05 left in the half as the 2-point try failed.
15 yards worth of penalties forced Troy into punt formation. Taff tried a fake punt but was tackled by Perrin and Carson Schmidt well short of the first down as Prairie took over on the Troy 41.
Stubbers ran a sweep to the right on the next play and went 41 yards for another Pirate touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 20-12.
Troy answered back with a 58 yard pass from Sandquist to Stoner but Prairie again stopped the 2-point try and held on to the lead at 20-18.
The two teams then traded punts with Prairie taking over at the Troy 46 on the exchange.
McWilliams burst through the middle and ran over a defender at about the 35 without even slowing down on his way to a 46 yard touchdown. The 2-point try again came up short as Prairie led 26-18 with 2:11 left in the half.
Prairie forced another punt and took over at the Troy 47. It was another 1-play scoring drive as Forsmann connected with Chaffee deep down the field for a 47 yard touchdown pass. Stubbers ran in the 2-pointer to make it 34-18 with 1:30 left in the half.
Prairie again forced Troy to punt after 3 plays and took over at the Troy 41.
Playing in hurry-up mode Prairie picked up a first down on runs of 9 yards by McWilliams and 7 by Forsmann. A facemask penalty on the Forsmann run moved the ball to the 13.

McWilliams scored on the next play to make it 40-18 with just 5 seconds left in the half.
Prairie had put up 40 points in the second quarter after getting shut out in the first.
Troy received the second half kickoff and tried to grind out a drive on the ground. They moved to the Prairie 37 before Stubbers sacked Sandquist for a 9 yard loss on fourth down. That gave Prairie the ball on their own 46.
Stubbers gained 23 yards around right end and McWilliams went up the middle for 20 to put the ball at the 11.
Two plays saw a net loss of 4 yards to set up a third down at the 15. Forsmann tossed a screen pass to Owen Anderson to the left side and Anderson followed his blocking into the end zone for another Pirate touchdown. On the 2-point try Forsmann passed to Mager, who had the ball go off his hands, right to McWilliams for the conversion. That made it 48-18 and wound up being the only scoring in the third quarter.
Prairie got the ball back at the Troy 39 when Anderson recovered a fumble.
Stubbers gained 20 yards on a run but the drive stalled and Prairie gave the ball back to Troy on downs.
For Troy is was 3 plays and punt again with Stoner’s punt getting blocked by one of his own players. Stubbers caught the ball at the Troy 35 and returned it to the 21. Stubbers then scored on a run to the left on the next play and ran in to the 2-pointer to make it 56-18.
Troy finally got back on the scoreboard with a 61 yard run by Nic Griffin to cut the lead to 56-24.
Prairie answered right back though as Chaffee returned the kickoff 52 yards to the Troy 28 before getting knocked out of bounds.
Anderson capped off a 6 play scoring drive with a 2 yard run up the middle. The 2-point try was stopped but Prairie now led 62-24.
Troy got another long touchdown from Griffin, this time for 52 yards, and added the 2-pointer to make it 62-32 with 5:29 to play.
Prairie needed just 3 plays to go 75 yards. Jayce Huling got a rare chance to play offense and carried the ball 25 yards to midfield. Stubbers picked up 10 then McWilliams went the final 40 yards for the touchdown. Huling ran in the 2-pointer on a sweep to the left to make it 70-32.
Prairie got the ball right back on downs at the Troy 48.
JV running back Cole Martin got the chance to show his stuff and carried the ball 35 yards on a sweep to the left for the game’s final touchdown. Hayden Uhlenkott ran in the 2-pointer to make it 78-32.
Prairie rolled up 439 yards rushing on 42 attempts with McWilliams picking up 171 on just 12 carries. Stubbers added 146 on 18 carries. Martin had 39 on 3 carries, Huling 25 on 1 carry and Forsmann 24 on 4 carries. Derik Shears had 17 yards rushing on the first play of the game but injured his ankle on the play and sat out the rest of the game.
Forsmann completed 6 of 19 passes for 151 yards with Chaffee catching 3 for 105 yards. Mager had 2 for 22, Anderson 1 for 15 and Stubbers 1 for 9.
Troy had 221 yards rushing on 43 attempts with Griffin picking up 180 on 18 carries. Sandquist was 6 for 25 passing for 123 yards with all 6 completions going to Stoner.
Leading the defense for Prairie was Spencer Schumacher with 8½ tackles. Stubbers had 7 with a fumble recovery. Perrin and Anderson had 7 each. Carson Schmidt had 5½. Dylan Schumacher had 3. Caleb McWilliams had 2½. Hunter Chaffee and Jayce Huling had 1 each.
Prairie is now 5-1 on the season, 3-1 in league play. Their next game is this Saturday, Oct. 14 at Wallace with game time set for 2 p.m.
