Pirates win big at Lapwai
The Prairie football team played their best game of the season, start to finish, to win at Lapwai 52-14, and take second place in the league Friday, Oct. 27.
Lapwai received the opening kickoff and picked up a first down before being forced to punt from the Prairie 45. The punt traveled just 13 yards and Prairie took over at the 32.Jake Stubbers broke loose for a 67 yard touchdown run on Prairie’s second offensive play of the game. Also shown is Hunter Chaffee.
After a 1 yard gain, Jake Stubbers took the ball over the right side and broke free for a 67 yard run for the game’s first points. The 2-point try failed as Prairie took a 6-0 lead.
Lapwai threatened to answer as they moved the ball down to the Prairie 24 but a blitz by Owen Anderson forced a bad pass that Stubbers intercepted at the 2 yard line and returned to the 6.
3 plays later Prairie gave the ball right back on a bad handoff with Lapwai taking over at the 11.
The Pirate defense came up big as they stopped the Wildcats and took over on downs. A big play was Jayce Huling’s rush on quarterback Peyton Sobbota, wound up knocking Sobbota out of the game. That wound up moving tailback Tui Moliga to quarterback which weakened both the QB and RB positions for the Wildcats.
Prairie took over on downs at the 13.
On the next play, Spencer Schumacher, who started at quarterback for the first time since the season opener at Genesee, threw his first pass of the game and connected with a wide open Damian Forsmann down the left side. Lapwai had nobody on that side of the field and Forsmann went 87 yards for a touchdown. Stubbers ran in the 2-pointer for a 14-0 lead.
The defense forced another Lapwai punt and took over at the Prairie 40. Five plays later Schumacher carried the ball in from the 15 for Prairie’s third touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 20-0.
After another Lapwai punt, Prairie took over at the Lapwai 48. They moved the ball down to the Lapwai 24 before coming up short on a fourth and 9 with Lapwai taking over at the 20.
Lapwai again had to punt with Prairie taking over at their own 37. It took the Pirates just 7 plays to travel 63 yards with Stubbers picking up his second touchdown of the game on a 27 yard run. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 28-0.
Prairie had another opportunity to score before halftime as Anderson intercepted a Lapwai pass at the Lapwai 45.
A 37 yard completion from Schumacher to Nick Mager set the Pirates up with a first and goal at the 7 but the Pirates couldn’t convert and turned the ball over on downs with 3 seconds left.
Owen Anderson fakes out a Lapwai defender, leaving him grasping at air, on the way to a touchdown.Prairie received the second half kickoff and needed just 5 plays to score. Sticking to the run, Stubbers picked up 4, Caleb McWilliams 18, Stubbers 15, McWilliams 12 and Stubbers the final 10 for the touchdown. Stubbers then scored the 2-pointer to make it 36-0.
Lapwai finally got on the scoreboard on their next possession with a 35 yard run by Moliga setting them up with a first and goal at the 2. Moliga scored on the next play. Huling deflected the 2-point pass making it 36-6.
Prairie took over at their own 44 after the kickoff and Schumacher connected up with Anderson on a short pass out to the left. Anderson used his blocking to head downfield and then put a move on a Lapwai defender at about the 30 before picking up a downfield block from Carson Schmidt that sprung him to the end zone on a 56 yard scoring play. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 44-6.
Lapwai had to punt the ball away on their next possession and Prairie took over at their own 33.
A 7-play drive featuring all running plays saw Prairie score again with Cole Martin going in from the 1. Martin then added the 2-pointer to make it 52-6 invoking the running clock for the rest of the game on the 40-point rule.
Prairie’s JV’s got most of the playing time the rest of the way.
Lapwai managed to add another score after a botched punt play gave Lapwai the ball at the Prairie 19.  They scored 3 plays later to make the final score 52-14.
Prairie had 327 yards rushing on 47 attempts with Stubbers picking up 174 yards on 16 carries. McWilliams added 104 yards on 12 carries and Schumacher had 38 yards on 4 carries.
Schumacher was 6 for 10 passing for 214 yards. Forsmann caught 2 passes for 103 yards. Hunter Chaffee caught 2 for 18 yards. Anderson caught 1 for 56 and Mager 1 for 37.
McWilliams led the team in tackles with 8½. Anderson had 6 plus an interception. Schumacher had 3½. Chaffee, Schmidt, Huling and Jace Perrin each had 3. Mager and Matt Seubert each had ½ a tackle. Stubbers had an interception.
Prairie finishes their regular season with an 8-1 record, 6-1 in league play, good for second place.
They have made the state playoffs for the fifth straight year and the eighth time in the last 10 years.
They will play at Wilder this Friday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. Mountain Time in a first round matchup. If they win they would play Nov. 11 at the Kibbie Dome, time to be determined.

Spencer Schumacher trots into the end zone for an easy touchdown. It was supposed to be a pass play but when he saw the defense vacate the middle of the field he took advantage.

The Lapwai bench players were the only Wildcats anywhere near Damian Forsmann as he took a pass from Spencer Schumacher 87 yards for a score.

Jayce Huling hits the Lapwai quarterback just as he’s passing. Also schown is Spencer Schumacher.

Owen Anderson and Caleb McWilliams combine on a tackle.

Jake Stubbers has the ball after intercepting a Lapwai pass down near the goal line. #32 is Cole Martin.

Carson Schmidt makes a tackle as Jayce Huling, 34, closes in to help.

Caleb McWilliams breaks past the line for a big gain at Lapwai. At left is Carson Schmidt. We believe that’s Dereck Arnzen in the middle of the photo.

Jake Stubbers leaves a couple of would-be tackler in his wake, taken out by Dereck Arnzen, who is underneath them, on his way to his second long touchdown. Also shown are Spencer Schumacher and, we think, Nick Mager, number 11.
