Record crowd at Mystery Night
A record breaking crowd celebrated Summit Academy’s 20th Annual Mystery Night Fundraiser on Saturday, November 4th.  The ‘Denim and Diamonds’ event was held at the Greencreek Community Hall, which had been transformed into the Grand Ole Opry for the evening.  Twenty years of memories hung on the walls depicting Mystery Nights of the past, as well as Summit drama productions and student highlights over the years.  A huge chandelier glittered in the middle of the hall, which was decorated with the talents of Therese Schmidt and Shirley Stubbers, along with many helpers.
The live auction was an animated affair, led by Rick and Kyle Musick.  Of particular interest to bidders were a customizable trip to Nashville to visit the original Grand Old Opry, a traditional seafood boil dinner, a gourmet surf and turf dinner, a Salmon River rafting trip, and a hunting trip.
The elimination raffle was the evening’s main event as one by one the 350 tickets were drawn.  Each 10th ticket drawn earned that guest a trip on stage where they won a prize by luck of the draw, or by singing to the audience and taking their choice among all the prizes.  The audience was entertained with many songs this way including “Happy Birthday”, “The Frog on the Log”, “Man, I Feel like a Woman”, and a fantastically improvised song about traveling to Mystery Night and how great it is to attend.    A few winners tried to steal the show, but were asked to return the microphone after their second song. Stage MC’s were Josh Lustig and Norm Sonnen, assisted by their bedazzling wives Brooke and Julie.
The final ten took to the stage at the end of the night, and were eliminated one by one between performances by "Willie Nelson", "June Carter-Cash", "Dolly Parton" and "Taylor Swift" among other country western stars.  A special thanks to all our alumni who helped make the evening an authentic Grand Ole Opry experience.  The last name to be drawn was Mike and Jana Frei who took home the grand prize of $10,000.  They are able to spend their winnings with any of our Mystery Night sponsors: Lindsley’s Furniture and Appliance, Sonnen Meats, Les Schwab Tire Center–Grangeville, B & A Performance Auto, Intermountain Feed & Mercantile, Hoene Hardware, Chesky Woodworking, and Cottonwood Foods.
Jim and Colleen Chmelik were chairs for this year’s event.  Ed and Kim Stubbers headed up the kitchen crew, while Dale & Jeanne Stubbers ran the bar. Prizes and auction items were procured by a committee headed by Alea Wassmuth.
Summit Academy recently wrapped up two sweepstakes drawings and those winners were announced at Mystery Night as well.  Jason Vogel of Lewiston took possession of the keys for the bright green '31 Ford Roadster which was built by the Summit shop class students.  The drawing for this sweepstakes was held in October and proceeds go towards to next hotrod project.  The drawing for the All At The Table sweepstakes was conducted at Mystery Night by auctioneer Kyle Musick.  Norm and Julie Sonnen were the thrilled winners of the table, and were already onstage due to their role as MCs for the night.  The table was built by Jim Chmelik and tickets had been sold throughout the state for the past year.  Proceeds benefit Summit Academy as well as seminarians in the Diocese of Boise.
Summit Academy thanks all those who attended for making our 20th annual fundraiser another one for the memory books.
