Pirates win 2 league games
The Prairie Pirates improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of home league wins. On Tuesday, Dec. 5 they beat Kamiah 70-49 and on Saturday, Dec. 9 they beat Troy 43-31, both games at Cottonwood.
Vs. Kamiah
In the opening quarter Prairie used the 3-pointer as Hunter Chaffee sank his first 4 attempts from Nick Mager scores on a lay-up against Kamiah.beyond the arc to offset the loss of Spencer Schumacher to foul trouble halfway through the quarter. Schumacher went to the bench with his third foul at the 3:42 mark and didn’t get back into the game until the start of the third quarter.
In addition to Chaffee’s 12 first quarter points, Nick Mager scored on a putback and a 3-pointer and Damian Forsmann and Devin Ross each added a basket for a 21-11 first quarter lead. Kamiah sank just 3 of 12 attempts while Prairie was hitting 8 of 16.
Chaffee cooled off from the outside in the second quarter but added 8 more points to lead Priarie to a 37-15 halftime lead. Ross and Owen Anderson each sank a 3 as Prairie had 7 first half 3-pointers.
Kamiah’s shooting woes continued as they hit just 1 of 11 shots in the second quarter.
Schumacher made up for lost time in the third quarter as he scored 12 points, including a buzzer-beating 3 while Mager and Ross each added another 3 pointer and Chaffee added a 2 as Prairie took a 57-33 lead into the final period.
Kamiah finally found their range as they hit 7 of 10 shots in the quarter but still lost ground as Prairie was 8 for 17 and outscored them 20-18.
Kamiah outscored the Pirates in the fourth but could get no closer than 17 points at 59-42 with 5:15 left. At that point Prairie put together a 9-2 run that stretched the lead back to 24.
Chaffee wound up as the leading scorer with 23 points with Schumacher scoring 18, all in the second half. Ross scored 12, Mager 8, Anderson 3 and Forsmann, Taylor Ott and Tanner Hibbard 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 44-29 with Chaffee grabbing 14 rebounds, Schumacher 11 and Mager 7.
Chaffee had 2 steals and Chaffee, Ross and Forsmann each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 27 for 64 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%. Kamiah was 17 for 49 from the field, 35%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%.
Prairie also won the JV game by a 55-41 score.
Kamiah scored the first 3 points of the game but then Prairie got going as Owen Anderson scored 6 and Taylor Ott and Hayden Uhlenkott added 2 each for a 10-6 lead.
Kamiah tied it but a 3 by Anderson and a steal by Cole Schlader for a lay-up made it 15-10. Prairie led 15-12 at the quarter break.
Kamiah outscored Prairie 2-6 over the first half of the second quarter to retake the lead at 17-18 but a driving lay-up by Ott gave Prairie the lead for good. Sam Mager added a couple of baskets and Schlader sank a buzzer beating 3 for a 26-22 halftime lead.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the third quarter for a 10 point lead and Kamiah got no closer than 8 the rest of the way.
Anderson wound up as the leading scorer with 16 points with Schlader adding 14. Mager scored 8 with Tanner Hibbard scoring 6, Ott 5, Uhlenkott 4 and David Wassmuth 2.
Kamiah had a slim 36-37 rebounding edge. Ott had 9 to lead the JV’s with Uhlenkott adding 7.
Schlader and Hibbard had 4 steals each with Uhlenkott adding 3. Hibbard and Mager had 3 assists each.
Prairie was 20 for 50 from the field, 40%, and 10 for 13 at the line, 77%. Kamiah was 16 for 52 from the field, 31%, and 5 for 13 from the line, 38%.

Vs. Troy
The Pirates had a tough time getting going against Troy’s tough man-to-man defense as they went scoreless until Ross converted a 3-point play with 4:35 left in the first quarter. Fortunately Prairie’s own defense was doing their job as Troy had scored just 6 to that point.

Troy scored first in the second quarter then Prairie scored the next 5 to take their first lead. Chaffee scored on a tip-in and Schumacher added a basket and then a free throw that gave Prairie an 11-10 lead with 4:46 left in the half.
Troy took back the lead with a basket but a basket each by Anderson and Ross gave the Pirates the lead for good.
Troy closed within 1 on a putback but a 3 by Ross and a basket each by Forsmann and Nick Mager made it 22-14 at the half.
Chaffee opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer as he peeled his defender off on a screen for the open look.
Troy scored then Ross added 2 more on a putback. A couple of Troy baskets cut the lead to 27-20 but Schumacher and Ross each his a pair of free throws and Chaffee scored a lay-up to make it 33-20.
It was 34-24 at the end of the third quarter.
Prairie had their opportunities to blow the game open at the free throw line but missed 11 free throws in the second half while making 10.
Schumacher had the only 2 baskets in the fourth quarter for Prairie with their other 5 points coming at the line as they held off the Trojans.
Troy did a good job limiting usual top scorers Schumacher and Chaffee, who had 9 and 7 points respectively, but Ross was able to step up and lead the team in scoring with 15 points which included a pair of 3-pointers. Mager added 7 points with Anderson scoring 3 and Forsmann 2.
Troy had a 28-39 rebounding advantage. Schumacher had 9 to lead the Pirates with Chaffee adding 8. 
Ross had 5 steals and Chaffee had 3 assists.
Prairie was 14 for 35 from the field, 40%, and 12 for 24 at the line, 50%. Troy was 12 for 46 from the field, 26%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. 
Troy struggled to get any scoring from anyone other than Isaac Stoner who had 16 of their 31 points.
Prairie is now 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
The JV team won their second game in 3 tries 56-35 over the Trojans with Schlader scoring 25 points.
Troy had their only lead of the game at 2-5 in the first quarter. Sam Mager scored 2 free throws and Schlader drove the baseline for a lay-up to put Prairie ahead for good.
Schlader wound up with 6 first quarter points and Ott added 4 as Prairie led 14-8.
Ott scored 6 in the second quarter with Schlader adding 4 and Mager and Uhlenkott 3 each as Prairie took a 30-13 lead by halftime.
Schlader scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, including a pair of 3-pointers, to help Prairie take a 47-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie’s biggest lead came at 56-27 then Troy scored the final 8 points of the game.
Schlader wound up with 25 points, 4 assists, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Ott scored 12 points with Mager scoring 8. Uhlenkott scored 5 and Anderson, Hibbard and John Gehring added 2 points each.
Prairie had a 39-32 rebounding edge led by Uhlenkott with 10 with Ott adding 8 and Mager 7.
Uhlenkott had 6 steals.
The JV’s were 22 for 48 from the field, 46%, and 11 for 22 at the line, 50%. Troy was 13 for 48 from the field, 27%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%.
