Pirates 1-1 on the week
The Prairie Pirates split their two games, this week, both at home.
On Thursday, Dec. 14, Lapwai gave them their first loss, 33-67. They were able to bounce back on Friday and beat Grangeville 51-46 at the Idaho County Shootout.
Vs. Lapwai

Spencer Schumacher led the Pirates with 13 points. Devin Ross added 8 points with Nick Mager scoring 6, Damian Forsmann 4 and Hunter Chaffee and Owen Anderson 1 each.

Vs. Grangeville
The return match against Grangeville was very similar to the first in that Grangeville got off to a strong start, led at halftime and then saw Prairie pull the game out in the second half.Spencer Schumacher and Owen Anderson go after the ball with a Grangeville player as Devin Ross watches. Schumacher got a cut on his chin in the first quarter and had to go with a different uniform due to blood on his usual #32. He wound up as #11 the rest of the game.
Behind the hot shooting of Trey Dreadfulwater, Grangeville scored the first 10 points of the game and led 8-17 at the end of the first quarter. Dreadfulwater scored 11 of Grangeville’s 17 points and was 5 for 5 from the field.
Prairie meanwhile was just 4 for 14 in the opening quarter with Devin Ross scoring 4 points and Nick Mager and Spencer Schumacher 2 each.
Prairie started to turn things around in the second quarter. Chaffee started to find the range with 10 second quarter points which included a pair of 3-pointers.
Prairie still trailed by 6 with 4 minutes left after Dreadfulwater scored his 18th point. The Pirates stepped it up defensively for the rest of the half shutting Grangeville out the final 4 minutes. Neither team scored for over 3 minutes until Spencer Schumacher made a pair of free throws with a minute to play.
Chaffee scored one of his 3 pointers with 15 seconds left that pulled the Pirates within 1 point at the half.
Mager scored on a putback to open the second half and give Prairie their first lead. Grangeville answered back with a basket but another basket by Mager put Prairie back on top and Chaffee added a 3-pointer for a 32-28 lead.
Grangeville pulled within 2 but a 3 by Ross put the lead back to 5. Twice more in the quarter Grangeville got back within 1 but each time Prairie answered.
Schumacher scored a pair of free throws and Anderson added another to give Prairie a 40-36 lead at the end of the third.
Grangeville scored the first 4 points of the 4th quarter to tie it. A backdoor lay-up by Chaffee on a feed from Schumacher put Prairie back on top.
A 3 by Grangeville’s Blake Darr gave Grangeville back the lead but it last just 20 seconds as Ross scored on a back door lay-up to put Prairie ahead. A full-court drive for a lay-up by Chaffee and a free throw each by Schumacher and Anderson gave Prairie a 5 point lead.
A 3-point play by Grangeville’s Noah Kaschmitter cut the lead to 2 with 43 seconds left and Grangeville got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead. A steal by Ross snuffed out that opportunity as Chaffee scored a free throw on the other end. Ross then rebounded Chaffee’s missed second free throw and that led to him getting fouled. Chaffee made both free throws for a 51-46 lead with 23 seconds left and that’s how it ended.
Chaffee wound up with 18 points to lead the scoring with Mager and Ross adding 11 points each. Schumacher scored 7 and Anderson scored 4.
Prairie outrebounded Grangeville 43-35 with Spencer Schumacher grabbing 13. Ross added 10 rebounds.
Ross had 4 steals and Damian Forsmann had 5 assists while Spencer Schumacher had 4.
