Pirates beat Potlatch by 8
The Prairie Pirates built an early lead and then held off a Potlatch rally for a 45-37 win over the Loggers in a league game at Cottonwood Friday, Jan. 12.
The game was a battle for second place in league as each team had just one league loss going into the game.Devin Ross puts up a 3-pointer as Spencer Schumacher watches the flight of the ball.
Potlatch scored first in the game but a driving lay-up by Devin Ross tied it and a pair of threes by Hunter Chaffee gave Prairie the lead.
Another 3 by Chaffee and a putback by Nick Mager led to a 13-9 lead by the Pirates at the end of the first quarter.
The Loggers’ DacotaHadaller converted a 3-point play to cut the lead to 1 but 3’s by Spencer Schumacher and Ross pushed the lead back to 7 at 19-12. A free throw by spencer made it 20-12.
After Potlatch scored, Dylan Schumacher hit Chaffee with a pass as he cut to the hoop for a lay-up to make it 22-14. A Logger 3 made it 22-17 at the half.
Chaffee opened the second half scoring with a drive along the baseline for a lay-up. Ross then added a 3-point play to make it 27-17, the Pirates’ biggest lead of the game.
Potlatch scored 6 straight to pull within 4 but a Chaffee 3 ended that run. 
The Loggers scored a basket and a free throw to again pull within 4 but Chaffee connected on his fifth 3 of the game and was fouled, converting a rare 4-point play, to give Prairie a 34-26 lead after 3 quarters.
Potlatch opened the fourth quarter with a 2-9 run to get within 1 point at 36-35 with 2:33 to play.
At that point Prairie looked to run clock when they had the ball. Damian Forsmann was fouled with 2:29 left and converted both ends of a 1 and 1. Prairie got the ball back on a missed Potlatch shot and Chaffee was fouled and also converted both ends of the bonus to make it 40-35.
Derik Shears got fouled but missed both free throws. Fortunately Chaffee rebounded the second miss and got fouled, making both free throws with 59 seconds left for a 42-35 lead.
Potlatch scored on a putback with 38 seconds left to pull within 5.
Mager got fouled with 22 seconds left and made 1 of 2 at the line. Prairie got the ball back and saw Forsmann go to the line with 10 seconds left. He missed both but Mager rebounded the second miss and put it in to make the final scored 45-37.
Chaffee wound up with 26 points to lead all scorers. He was 5 for 7 from 3-point range in the game and 7 for 10 overall. Ross scored 8 with Mager scoring 5, Spencer Schumacher 4 and Forsmann 2.
Prairie had a 26-21 edge on the boards including an 8-4 edge in the fourth quarter. Spencer Schumacher had 8 boards to lead the Pirates.
Dylan Schumacher had 3 steals and 4 assists.
The Pirates were 14 for 30 from the field, 47%, and 10 for 17 at the line, 59%. Potlatch was 15 for 40 from the field, 38%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%.
Prairie is now 8-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Prairie also won the JV game 40-29.
The Pirates scored first when Derik Shears made 2 free throws and led 6-2 after a basket by Taylor Ott.
Potlatch tied it at 6 and again at 8 and took their only lead of the game at 11-13 on a 3-pointer.
The led for just 10 seconds though as Tanner Hibbard scored to tie it at 13 and Sam Mager scored to make it 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Cole Schlader scored on a running 1-hander to open the second quarter but Potlatch pulled within 1 at 17-16.
Prairie then put together a 9-0 scoring run to take control. Mager started it with a drive to the hoop and Ott followed with a basket after making a steal. Schlader connected from 3-point range and then drove full court for a lay-up to make it 26-18.
Potlatch closed to within 26-19 by the end of the half.
Potlatch scored to pull within 5 in the third but Mager and Schlader each scored to push the lead back to 9 at 30-21.
Potlatch again got within 5 by the end of the quarter and within 3 at 30-27 early in the fourth quarter.
The score stayed there until Mager connected on a 3 with 4:20 to play. He then stole the ball and passed ahead to Schlader for a lay-up and a 35-27 lead with 4:00 to play.
Potlatch scored only 1 basket in the final 7 minutes of play with Hayden Uhlenkott adding a back door lay-up on a feed from Hibbard and Schlader sinking a 3 to close out the game.
Schlader scored 17 to lead the JV’s in scoring with Mager adding 11 points on 5 for 7 shooting. Ott scored 6 with Shears, Hibbard and Uhlenkott adding 2 points each. 
Potlatch had a 29-43 rebounding edge. Ott led Prairie with 8 rebounds with Shears and Hibbard adding 6 each.
Schlader had 8 steals and 4 assists and Ott had 5 steals and Mager had 3 assists.
The JV’s were 17 for 52 from the field, 33%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%. Potlatch was 11 for 38 from the field, 29%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%.
