win twice
The Prairie Pirates closed out their regular season with a pair of lopsided wins. They finished their league slate with a 63-39 win over Clearwater Valley at Kooskia Thursday, Feb. 8 and then beat Orofino 68-16 on Senior Night Saturday, Feb. 10 at Cottonwood. They opened District play Tuesday, Feb. 13 against Potlatch. After winning 42-38, they will play Lapwai in the District Championship Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Prairie led 14-5 after 1 quarter and 32-17 at the half. They stretched the lead to 51-27 after 3 quarters. Also having a big game for the Pirates were Spencer Schumacher with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Devin Ross with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Once the game started it was all Prairie. Ross scored the first points of the game and Nick Mager added a pair of free throws for a 4-0 lead. Orofino scored a free throw and Spencer Schumacher scored a putback. Orofino scored again then Priarie scored 7 straight. Chaffee sank a 3-pointer and Ross and Mager each added a basket for a 13-3 lead. Orofino sank a 3 with 2:00 left in the first quarter and then would not score again until the 2:40 mark of the third quarter. Prairie meanwhile scored 10 more to end the first quarter, outscored Orofino 14-0 in the second and scored 14 more in the third for a 38-0 run. A highlight in the second quarter was Ross scoring on a dunk with 3:25 left in the half. A lowlight of the run came with about 1:10 left in the half when Chaffee went down with an injury, apparently to his ankle, and missed the rest of the game. He may not be able to suit up for the District game on Tuesday as well. Spencer Schumacher was a perfect 5 for 5 in the first half, scoring 10 points. Mager added 9, Ross * and Chaffee 6 on a pair of first quarter 3’s. Ross did the bulk of the scoring in the third quarter with 13 of Prairie’s 24 third quarter points. After Orofino scored with 2:40 left in the quarter, Prairie ran off another 6 straight points for a 57-8 lead. It was 61-12 entering the fourth quarter, which was played under a running clock. Ross wound up with 21 points to lead all scorers. Spencer Schumacher added 13 with Mager scoring 12, Dylan Schumacher 8, Chaffee 6, Damian Forsmann 4, Tanner Hibbard 2 and Derik Shears and Sam Mager 1 each. Prairie dominated the boards 45 to 16. Spencer Schumacher and Ross each had a double-double with 13 and 10 rebounds respectively. Ross also had 3 steals and 4 assists. Nick Mager also had 4 assists with Spencer Schumacher and Forsmann picking up 3 apiece as Prairie had 18 assists on their 28 baskets. The Pirates were 28 for 52 from the field, 54%, and 10 for 15 at the line, 67%. Orofino was 6 for 42 from the field, 14%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%. Prairie finishes their regular season with a 10-2 league record, 17-3 overall. In the JV’s final game of the season, they won 60-20. Orofino actually led early on at 4-7 but Prairie then scored 12 straight points to take the lead for good. Cole Schlader kicked off the run with a driving lay-up. Owen Anderson scored 3 straight baskets, Schlader added another and Tayler Ott finished it off to make it 16-7. After an Orofino basket, Prairie scored another 8 straight points to make it a 20-2 run. Schlader, Ott, Derik Shears and Anderson each scored a basket for that 8-0 run. Prairie led 26-10 at the end of the quarter. Prairie scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to push the lead to 38-10. Schlader connected on a pair of 3-pointers and had 8 points in the quarter. Sam Mager and John Gehring each added a basket as Prairie took a 38-12 lead at the half. Schlader scored another 9 points in the third quarter and Hayden Uhlenkott added 5 as Prairie outscored the Maniacs 18-6 to take a 56-18 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth was played under a running clock and Prairie outscored Orofino 4-2. Schlader had 23 points to lead the scoring with Anderson and Gehring adding 8 each. Ott scored 6, Uhlenkott 5, Shears 4 and Mager, Tyler Wemhoff and Guilherme Acciardi 2 each. Prairie also dominated on the boards 44-26. Mager, Anderson and David Wassmuth each had 6 to lead the team. Schlader and Ott each had 5 steals and Mager had 4 steals and 5 assists. Prairie was 27 for 70 from the field, 39%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.
