Pirates earn Consolation Trophy
The Prairie boys basketball team faced 3 teams from District 3 at the State Basketball Tournament and came away with 2 wins and 1 loss and the Consolation Trophy, which is roughly equivalent to 4th place March 1-3 at Caldwell’s Vallivue High School.
They opened against Ambrose of Meridian and fell behind by as many as 28 points then put on a furious rally over the final 10 minutes of play only to come up short, 55-57, on Thursday, March 1. On Friday, March 2, they turned things around and got off to a hot start, then held off Riverstone of Boise’s rally for a 61-49 win. Finally on Saturday, March 3, they put together a whole game and routed Liberty Charter of Nampa 80-41 for the consolation trophy.
Vs. Ambrose
For whatever reason, Prairie didn’t appear ready to play against Ambrose. They turned the ball over 12 times in the first quarter and fell behind 0-18 with Ambrose’s Ethan Christianson scoring 16 of those points.Spencer Schumacher shoots against Ambrose as Devin Ross looks on.
Prairie finally scored when Devin Ross pumped in a midrange jumper with 54 seconds left. Ambrose then added a basket for a 2-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Christianson kept up his onslaught for Ambrose in the second quarter scoring 12 of their 17 points as they took a 10-37 halftime lead. He had 28 first half points.
Spencer Schumacher scored 4 in the second quarter while Ross and Nick Mager added 2 each.
Prairie looked like a different team in the second half. They came out and scored the first 6 points as Ross, Schumacher and Mager each scored a basket to cut the lead to 21.
Ambrose then responded with a 0-7 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 16-44 with 2:20 left in the quarter.
Prairie then put together a 12-0 run that carried in to the fourth quarter. It started with Mager redirecting a pass to Ross for a lay-up. Dylan Schumacher the scored after stealing the ball. Ross scored on an inbounds play. Spencer Schumacher scored following a steal by Ross and Ross scored to make it 25-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Ross made a 3 to open the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 16 points.
Christianson scored a pair of free throws to break the run but Prairie then put together a 10-0 run to get back within 8 points. Mager drove inside for a lay-up. Hunter Chaffee finally scored his first points on a 3 following a steal by Owen Anderson. Dylan Schumacher made a free throw and Spencer Schumacher followed with 2 more at the line. Chaffee then scored a lay-up after a steal.
Christianson again broke the run with a pair of free throws. 
A Dylan Schumacher free throw was answered by Ambrose hitting 2 of 4 free throws. 
Spencer Schumacher scored inside but Christianson answered with 2 free throws as Ambrose led by 11 at 41-52 with 3:41 left.
Spencer Schumacher then scored a putback and got fouled, converting a 3-point play. Chaffee then hit a 3 to cut the lead to 5 at 47-52 with 3:09 left.
Ambrose converted 1 of 2 free throws but Prairie answered with a lay-up by Chaffee and a 3 by Dylan Schumacher to pull within 1 at 52-53 with 2:03 left.
Christianson scored Ambrose’s only basket of the fourth quarter and Spencer Schumacher came back with a free throw. Ambrose made just 1 of 6 free throws over the next minute of play for a 53-56 lead.
Dylan Schumacher sank 2 free throws with 11.1 seconds left to cut the deficit to 1 at 55-56 and then he and Anderson forced a jump ball which gave Prairie the ball right back. 
Coach Kevin Chaffee called a timeout to set up a shot for Hunter Chaffee but his shot got deflected and Christianson came up with the ball and was fouled. He made the first free throw but missed the second. Chaffee rebounded but his desperation shot came up way short.
Spencer Schumacher scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Ross added 14 points, Chaffee 10, Dylan Schumacher 9 and Mager 6.
Mager, Ross and Spencer Schumacher all wound up fouling out and Ambrose had 2 players foul out.
Christianson wound up with 42 points with nobody else for Ambrose scoring more than 7.
Prairie had a 39-29 advantage on the boards thanks to a 20-7 margin in the fourth quarter.
Anderson and Chaffee each had 3 steals while Ross, Mager and Spencer and Dylan Schumacher each had 2.
Mager and Anderson each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 54 from the field, 39%, and 9 of 17 at the line, 53%. Ambrose was 19 for 44 from the field, 43%, and 15 for 29 at the line, 52%.

Vs. Riverstone
Hunter Chaffee scores a lay-up against Riverstone.Prairie was the team to get off to the strong start in the game against Riverstone as the Pirates jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led 33-14 by the end of the first quarter.
Coach Kevin Chaffee changed things up a bit by having Dylan Schumacher start ahead of Damian Forsmann.
Ross got things started with a pair of free throws and added a basket on an inbounds play. Spencer Schumacher converted a 3-point play. Mager scored inside. Chaffee sank a 3 and then added a free throw for the 13-0 lead.
Spencer Schumacher wound up scoring 13 first quarter points as Prairie continued to go inside while Mager, Ross and Chaffee each had 6 and Anderson scored 2.
Riverstone meanwhile was limited mostly to outside shooting as 4 of their 5 first quarter baskets were 3-pointers.
Prairie took the full-court press off in the second quarter and still managed to outscore the Otters 12-8 with Spencer Schumacher adding 4 more for 17 first half points. Mager and Chaffee each scored 3 in the quarter and Ross added 2 as Prairie took a 45-22 lead in to the halftime break.
In the third quarter Riverstone came out with a 2-10 run to pull within 15 at 47-32. Prairie then responded with 7 straight points to push the lead back to 22 at 54-32.
Prairie led 57-37 after 3 quarters.
Prairie scored just 4 points in the fourth quarter but hung on to win as Riverstone finished the game on a 1-12 run to get back within 12 at the finish.
Spencer Schumacher wound up with 23 points to lead the scoring. Ross scored 12 with Mager and Chaffee adding 11 each. Anderson scored 4.
Prairie had a 44-33 advantage on the boards led by Ross with 13 rebounds and Spencer Schumacher with 11.
Spencer Schumacher had 5 steals and Chaffee and Dylan Schumacher each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 57 from the field, 52%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. Riverstone was 18 for 52 from the field, 35%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.

vs. Liberty Charter
In the consolation final against Liberty Charter, Prairie broke the game open with an 11-0 run to finish the first quarter and then had a 14-2 run in the second quarter. They kept the foot on the gas in the second half and didn’t allow the Patriots any hope of a comeback.Nick Mager puts up a shot against Liberty Charter.
Chaffee finished his high school career with 34 points and had seven 3-pointers.
Prairie took the lead on a 3-pointer by Dylan Schumacher and never trailed.
The game was still close at 12-8 when Ross scored on an inbounds feed from Mager that kicked off the 11-0 run to finish the first quarter.
Chaffee followed with a 3-point play. Dylan Schumacher drove for a lay-up. Mager scored after a steal and Spencer Schumacher finished off the quarter with a basket that made it 23-8.
The Patriots got back within 14 at 25-11 when Prairie put together a 12-0 run. Mager started it with a bank shot then Chaffee drained two 3-pointers. Spencer Schumacher scored the next 4 points on a basket and 2 free throws to make it 37-11.
Prairie led 42-15 at the half as Anderson closed out the half with a 3-pointer from the corner.
Prairie kept it going in the third quarter as Chaffee sank 2 more 3’s for 6 points and Ross went 3 for 3 to also score 6 in the quarter. Spencer Schumacher added 5 on 2 baskets and a free throw.
Prairie led 63-28 after outscoring the Patriots 21-13 in the quarter.
Chaffee added another 12 points in the fourth quarter as he hit on 4 of 5 shots and was 2 for 2 at the line. Prairie outscored the Patriots 17-13 in the fourth to close out their season.
Chaffee wound up with 34 points as mentioned earlier on 12 for 19 shooting. Fellow senior Mager added 10 points and had 6 assists in his final game as a Pirate.
Spencer Schumacher scored 13 with Dylan Schumacher scoring 9, Ross 8 and Anderson and Forsmann 3 each.
Prairie had a 30-22 edge on the boards led by Ross and Spencer Schumacher with 8 each.
Chaffee had 2 steals. Prairie had 21 total assists on 30 made baskets with Mager collecting 6 while Ross and Dylan Schumacher had 4 each.
Prairie was 30 for 45 from the field, 67%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%. Liberty Charter was 13 for 49 from the field, 27%, and 14 for 18 at the line, 78%.
Prairie had their highest scoring game of the season with their 80 points scored. Their previous high was 72 against Grangeville in their first game of the season.
Prairie winds up their season with a 22-5 record.

Pirates named to All-WPL team
Three Prairie Pirates wete named to the All-White Pine League Division 1 team.
Hunter Chaffee was a first team selection while Spencer Schumacher was a second team selection.
Devin Ross earned honorable mention.
Lapwai’s Emmitt Taylor was named player of the year while Potlatch’s Ryan Ball was named as coach of the year.
