Pirates swept at Pomeroy
The Prairie baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Pomeroy Friday, April 6.
They lost the first game 0-10 and then lost the second game 5-6 in 8 innings.
The weather was surprisingly nice at Pomeroy with dry, partly sunny conditions, considering it was pouring down rain in Cottonwood that afternoon.
Game 1
The Pirates ran into a tough pitcher in the opening game as they were limited to just 1 hit, an infield single by Spencer Schumacher Neither 1st Baseman Dereck Arnzen nor 2nd Baseman Conner Schwartz could get to this short fly ball at Pomeroy. Schwartz wound up injuring his knee on the play and had to come out of the game.and hit just 2 balls out of the infield.
Sam Mager was able to get on base all three times on an error and 2 walks and was the only Prairie hitter to get as far as third base, doing so twice. Schumacher was the only other Prairie hitter to reach base as he walked in addition to his single.
Pomeroy meanwhile got to Prairie starter Jace Perrin with a leadoff triple. That runner scored on a sacrifice fly. Perrin gave up 3 more runs in the third inning on 2 singles, a double and an error.
Matthew Seubert took over in the fourth and struggled with command, walking 5 batters in 1 plus innings. He gave up 5 runs in the fourth on 4 walks, 2 singles and an error.
In the bottom of the fifth Pomeroy needed 1 run to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. After the leadoff hitter walked, the next batter doubled to right to score the game-ending run.
Perrin gave up 4 runs on 4 hits with 1 hit batsman, no walks and 2 strikeouts. Seubert gave up 6 runs on 3 hits with 5 walks and 1 strikeout.
Pomeroy starter Hogan Heytvelt pitched all 5 innings allowing 1 hit and 3 walks with 9 strikeouts.

Game 2
The second game was much more competitive.
Prairie didn’t score in the first inning while Dereck Arnzen gave up a leadoff walk that eventually scored on a sacrifice fly for a 0-1 Pomeroy lead.
Prairie tied it in the second inning when Schumacher led off and reached on an error. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on Nick Arnzen’s single up the middle.
Pomeroy repeated their first inning score in the second with a leadoff walk that eventually scored on a sacrifice fly for a 1-2 lead.
Pomeroy changed pitchers in the third and Prairie went down in order. 
Tate Berdoy went to the mound for Prairie in the third and gave up a leadoff double but stranded the runner at third with a strikeout and a pair of comebackers to the mound.
Prairie was able to tie the score again in the fourth as Arnzen drew a 1-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Schumacher’s single to right. Berdoy followed with a single up the middle but both he and Schumacher were left on base as the inning ended.
Pomeroy got to Berdoy for 3 singles and a walk in the bottom of the fourth, good for 2 runs and a 2-4 lead.

Carson Forsman led off with a single to right and Lane Remacle worked a walk. Sam Mager tried a bunt but the third baseman fielded the ball and got a forceout at third on Forsman.  Dalton Ross followed with a sacrifice bunt with Remacle scoring and he wound up reaching on an error. Arnzen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a second out, Berdoy doubled home both Mager and Ross for a 5-4 Prairie lead.
Sam Mager took over on the mound for the fifth inning and survived a 2-out walk.
Prairie went down in order in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth Pomeroy got a 1 out single off of Mager. A stolen base and a wild pitch moved the runner to third. He then pulled off a steal of home to tie the score.
Pomeroy changed pitchers in the seventh and got 3 ground ball outs.
Schumacher went to the mound for Prairie and survived a 1 out walk to send the game to extra innings.
Berdoy drew a 1-out walk in the eighth, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch but 2 strikeouts left him 90 feet from giving Prairie a lead.
In the bottom of the eighth Schumacher gave up a leadoff single. A groundout to first moved the runner to second. A bloop single that landed just out of reach of everybody behind first base moved the runner to third.
Coach David Shears called for an intentional walk to load the bases and set up a force at every base. Schumacher then got a pop-up to second base for the second out. On his first pitch to the next hitter, Pomeroy pulled off their second steal of home in the game to win it 5-6.
Arnzen gave up 2 runs on no hits with 3 walks and a hit batsman in 2 innings. Berdoy gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Mager gave up 1 run on 1 hit with 2 walks in 2 innings. Schumacher gave up 1 run on 2 hits with 2 walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Prairie had 5 hits in the game. Berdoy had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Schumacher and Nick Mager each had a single and an RBI. Forsmann had a single.
Prairie is now 2-3 on the season.
