Pirates lose twice
The Prairie baseball team lost a pair of games last week. The big one was a 9-10 league loss to Clearwater Valley at Cottonwood Thursday, May 3. A win would have given them 2nd place in league and a bye into the final 4 at District, which would also have clinched a state tournament berth. The other loss was 1-7 to St. Maries on Friday, May 4 at Lewiston.
Vs. C.V.
In their final league game of the season, which was also senior night, the Pirates needed a win to clinch 2nd place in league, which also had a state tournament berth attached. Owen Anderson almost overran the ball but reached back to make a catch against C.V.
They had a 4-run lead in the top of the seventh but gave up 5 runs in that inning to go down to defeat.
The first inning went the Pirates way as Sam Mager gave up a 2-out base hit but then got out of the inning with no runs scored. In the bottom of the first, Mager led off with a double to left center and scored on Spencer Schumacher’s 2-out single to left.
Things started to go bad in the second inning though. Mager gave up a 1-out infield single then got the second out. A walk was then followed by 3 straight singles. At that point Mager was lifted in favor of Tate Berdoy. Berdoy gave up a single before getting out of the inning. Prairie now trailed 1-4.
Owen Anderson reached on an error to lead off the Prairie half of the second. He stole second and moved to third on Jace Perrin’s groundout to short. He then scored on Nick Mager’s groundout to short to make it 2-4.
Berdoy gave up a leadoff triple in the third in and C.V. added another run on a single 2 batters later to make it 2-5.
Prairie had a possible rally snuffed out by a double play in the bottom of the third.
Schumacher went to the mound in the fourth and was not as sharp as usual, possibly due to battling a groin pull. He walked the bases loaded with 1 out but got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.
Prairie started their comeback in the bottom of fourth as Schumacher drew a leadoff walk and Dereck Arnzen followed with a single up the middle. After an out, Perrin singled up the middle to score Schumacher. Nick Mager drew a walk to load the bases and C.V. changed pitchers. Luke Schwartz then battled his way to a walk that scored Arnzen. Sam Mager hit a ground ball and the throw went home where Perrin was able to score before the throw got there to tie the game at 5-5.
Schumacher battled through a scoreless fifth despite giving up a leadoff single and a 2-out walk.
Prairie took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth. Schumacher again drew a leadoff walk. He scored on Arnzen’s double to deep left field. Arnzen moved to third on a wild pitch and then Owen Anderson drew a walk.
C.V. changed pitchers again and Perrin greeted the new pitcher with a 2-run single up the middle. A sacrifice  bunt by Nick Mager moved Perrin to second and a balk moved him to third. Schwartz was then able to fight off an 0-2 pitch and single to right field, scoring Perring to make it 9-5.
Schumacher had an easy 6th inning, getting C.V. out in order. Prairie was unable toad on in their half of the sixth.
In the seventh Schumacher got a strikeout to open the inning then things started to come unraveled. An infield hit was followed by an error. Schumacher then got a second strikeout. 2 walks followed to force in a run but Prairie still led 9-6. A single to left scored 2 more runs to make it 9-8. The next batter hit a ground ball right to second baseman Dalton Ross but first baseman Arnzen had moved toward the play and couldn’t get back to first in time to beat the runner and 2 more runs wound up scoring as C.V. took the lead.
In the bottom of the inning Prairie hit into 3 straight ground ball outs to end the game.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game led by Arnzen who had a single and a double and an RBI. Perrin had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Sam Mager had a double. Schwartz had a single and 2 RBI and Schumacher had a single and an RBI.
Sam Mager pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Berdoy pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits with no walks and 1 strikeout. Schumacher pitched 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts.
The loss puts Genesee into second place and Prairie into third in the league standings, forcing a play-in game against Troy on Tuesday, May 8. If they won that game they would earn a state berth and play Genesee at District at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 11 at Orofino. Potlatch plays the C.V.-Lapwai winner at 1 p.m. Friday’s winners will play Saturday at 11 a.m. for 1st and 2nd while Friday’s losers play Saturday at 9 a.m. for 3rd and 4th. All 4 teams advance to state which will be May 18-19, also at Orofino.
