Pirates qualify for State
The Prairie Baseball team will be going to state for the third time in the past five years after beating Troy 14-0 in a play-in game at Cottonwood Tuesday, May 8. That win put them into the District Tournament where they lost 3-11 to Genesee and beat Lapwai 19-3 to finish as the third seed to State.
They open State play at 9 a.m. Friday, May 18 against Horseshoe Bend at Orofino. 
Play-In vs. Troy
Tate Berdoy tossed a 3-hit shutout and the Prairie bats pounded out 12 hits good for 14 runs in a 5-inning mercy rule game against Troy at Cottonwood Tuesday, May 8.Tate Berdoy tossed a 3-hit shutout against Troy to earn the Pirates a trip to State. He then gave up just 4 hits and 3 runs in the third place game at District as Prairie beat Lapwai 19-3.
Berdoy set down the first 8 Trojans to come to the plate until a 2-out double in the third inning broke up his perfect game. By that time the Pirates had a 6-0 lead.
Dalton Ross got the offense started with a 1-out single to left in the bottom of the first. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Ross scored when Berdoy singled up the middle. Berdoy stole second and went to third when Spencer Schumacher beat out an infield single. Dereck Arnzen singled to right center to score Berdoy. Owen Anderson then worked a walk to load the bases. After a second out, Nick Mager singled to left to score both Schumacher and Arnzen and give the Pirates a 4-0 lead after 1 inning.
Ross led off the second and reached again on an error. Berdoy beat out an infield single. Schumacher doubled to left to score Ross and Berdoy scored when the centerfielder dropped Arnzen’s popup. That made it 6-0 Pirates.
In the third inning Sam Mager drew a 1 out walk, stole second and then stole third. Ross then lofted a fly ball to short left field that the Troy shortstop was able to catch but Mager was able to score from third on a rare sacrifice fly to the shortstop. That made it 7-0.
Troy got a couple of hits in the fourth inning and had runners on second and third with only 1 out. Berdoy then induced an infield pop-up that he caught for the second out and then got a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Troy changed pitchers for the bottom of the fourth and it turned out to be a bad move as Prairie’s first 6 hitters of the inning all reached base. Arnzen led off with a double to right center. Anderson walk and Jace Perrin beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Nick Mager then picked up another RBI on a squeeze bunt that he was able to beat out for a hit. Luke Schwartz then walked to force home Anderson and Sam Mager singled to right to score Perrin and Nick Mager. Schwartz scored on a passed ball with Sam Mager moving to third. Sam then scored on an errant pickoff throw. After 2 outs, Schumacher tripled to the fence in right field and also scored on an errant pickoff throw to make it 14-0.
Berdoy then set the Trojans down in order in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Berdoy allowed just 3 hits with no walks and had 6 strikeouts.
Prairie had 12 hits led by Schumacher, who was a home run short of a cycle with a single, double and triple and an RBI. Arnzen had a single and a double and 2 RBI. Nick Mager had 2 singles and 3 RBI. Berdoy had 2 singles and an RBI. Sam Mager had a single and 2 RBI. Ross had a single and an RBI and Perrin had a single. Schwartz had an RBI.

Vs. Genesee at District
In the district opener against Genesee, Prairie sent Schumacher to the mound and he struggled as the Bulldogs had his fastball well-timed as they hit him hard in the first inning.
Prairie leadoff hitter Sam Mager drew a walk in the top of the first but Prairie then went down in order.

It was double to center, single to center and single to center the first 3 batters. The next batter reached on an error to load the bases. Schumacher then induced a comebacker to get an out at home. He then walked in a run before getting a second out. A 2-run single made it 0-4 in Genesee’s favor.
In the second inning Schumacher was able to get his curveball over for strikes and got through the second and third innings with just 1 hit each inning.
In the fourth inning, Arnzen drew a leadoff walk with Anderson following with a double to left center. Arnzen scored on a groundout to third by Perrin with Anderson going to third. After a strikeout, Sam Mager walked to load the bases but another strikeout ended the inning.
Genesee got that run right back in the bottom of the fourth on a walk and a 2-out double to center.
Prairie scored 2 in the fifth after an unfortunate double play. Berdoy singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Schumacher then hit what appeared to be a single to right but the rightfielder was able to make a shoestring catch and easily doubled Berdoy off at second. Arnzen the doubled to right center and Anderson walked. Perrin reached on an error to load the bases. Nick Mager then singled home both Arnzen and Anderson to cut the deficit to 3-5. Genesee changed pitchers and the new pitcher got the inning ending strikeout.
Everything fell apart for the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth as 3 errors and 3 hit batsmen led to 6 runs.
In the sixth the Pirates went down in order. They tried to rally in the seventh as Schumacher led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Anderson and Nick Mager both walked to load the bases with 2 outs but a fly ball out ended the game.
Schumacher gave up 11 runs on 11 hits with 1 walk, 3 hit batsmen and 7 strikeouts.
Prairie had 7 hits led by Nick Mager who had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Schumacher, Arnzen and Anderson each had a double and Berdoy had a single. Perrin had the other RBI.

Vs. Lapwai at District
On Saturday morning Prairie played Lapwai for 3rd and 4th at District.
The game didn’t start well as Lapwai got to Berdoy for 3 runs in the first. Only 1 was earned as an error contributed to the scoring. After the first inning though Berdoy settled in and shut out the Wildcats the rest of the way, holding them to just 4 hits.
It took Prairie until the second to get into the game offensively and they took the lead with a 6-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning. 
They then put the game away with a 13-run uprising in the fourth that let them end the game after 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
Prairie pounded out 15 hits in the game led by Berdoy who had a double and 3 singles with 3 RBI. Arnzen also had a double and 2 singles and 2 RBI. Sam Mager had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Michael Schwartz had 2 singles and 2 RBI. Schumacher had a double and an RBI. Perrin had a single and 2 RBI.
Nick Mager had a single and 2 RBI and Anderson had a single.
Berdoy gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
With the win, Prairie takes a 12-10 record into the state tournament.
