Cottonwood City Council meets
Streets commissioner Jack Duman informed the Cottonwood City Council at their May meeting Monday, May 14, that they did not get the FEMA grant for the Main St. culvert project.
They got some input about what they need to improve their chances with resubmission and Duman said he has some other possible avenues for funding. At this point though they are at least 2 years out now for getting something done. Duman said better flow data is one thing that would help.
Dani Cochran was presented the award from the Idaho County Free Press/Shopper for being voted as best police official. At the same time Cottonwood Police Chief Terry Cochran presented her with a promotion.
The owner of the tattoo shop in the old Twins Bar was present with concerns about keeping his Harley motorcycle parked out of the elements. He was told that it is illegal to park on the sidewalk in both city and state statutes. Mayor Pepper Harman suggested he talk to Cottonwood Credit Union about renting the patio next to the old Royale Room. There is plenty of covered space in there.
A motion was made and passed to divvy up the street sweeper repairs and expenditures among the streets, water and sewer departments at 50%-25%-25%. This is due to it being used for all three departments. The vacuum portion of it is of great help to the sewer and water departments when repairing leaks.
The Currin property north of the old Summit school was discussed regarding water/sewer connections. Anyone developing that property would have to connect as there is water and sewer readily available. The Gabe Riener property on the east side of highway 95 was exempted because there isn’t any city water or sewer lines readily available due to it being on the other side of the highway.
Rich and Laurie Workman asked to terminate their lease on the city property above the Wimer ballfields as they no longer need the pasture ground for their horses. The request was granted.
The Council approved continuing their financial commitment to Ida-Lew Economic Development Council. They normally do this during budgeting but Ida-Lew had asked for an earlier commitment. They city normally contributes $3,000 annually and did so again.
A catering permit was approved for Keuterville Pub & Grub for VFW Post #4902 during Fair Days in the Cottonwood City Park.
The mayor was directed to write a support letter for St. Mary’s Hospital Ambulance as they seek a grant to purchase a power loading system.
In reports Pat Holthaus said they pumped about 1.8 million gallons of water and sold almost 1.6 million with a net loss of 17%. Roy Uhlenkott said they found one leak and repaired it. Testing all came back good.
In the sewer report Uhlenkott said they have received a sewer report and a follow-up letter regarding the new permit. Training will be done on Wednesday this week and the permit writer will be coming in July.
In the street report Duman said he has made some changes to the Broadway paving project at the suggestion of Poe Asphalt. With their suggestions the paving itself would cost more but the prep work would cost less. Work is slated for late May or early June.
Linda Nida reported they still need to put a cover over the elevator in the land and buildings report.
In the airport report Duman said they looked into having Poe do the airport runups while they were here for the street project but the cost was a lot higher than he had hoped.
They will be getting 500 ton of gravel from Seubert Excavators that will be used to fill in the runway shoulders. It will be put in their stockpile until they can get time to do the work.
Nida reported the fire department had no calls this past month but did participate in the mass casualty drill this past weekend. They are looking at disposing of some surplus items and Nida asked about how to proceed.
Fire chief Greg Danly would also like to get a reserve fund set up to periodically replace their air bottles, which have a 15-year life span.
The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Monday, June 11 at 7 p.m.
