23 turned out for football
There are 23 players turned out for football at Prairie this year as the team looks to defend the state championship won last season.
There are plenty of holes to fill as starting tailback, wideouts, defensive backs and offensive and defensive lineman were hit hard by graduation.
Prairie also has several key contributors returning in senior quarterback Spencer Schumacher, senior running back Caleb McWilliams, senior lineman Carson Schmidt and junior running back/linebacker Owen Anderson.
Also returning are seniors Dylan Schumacher and Michael Schwartz, who both dealt with injuries last season.
Junior returnees Damian Forsmann, Derik Shears will likely be the starting receivers with fellow juniors Sam Mager and Reid Uptmor also listed at receiver on the roster.
Juniors Hayden Uhlenkott, Garrett Bunce and Carson Forsman will vie for starting line spots along with sophomore Dean Johnson.
Sophomore Cole Martin will likely get a lot of time at running back.
Other sophomores out are Dalton Ross, John Gehring and Cole Schlader.
Freshmen out are Tayden Hibbard, Lane Schumacher, Zach Rambo, Jesse Cronan and Brody Hasselstrom.
Ryan Hasselstrom returns as head coach with assistants Teel Bruner and Matt Elven also returning.
Around the league Genesee returns their quarterback, Kolby Moser, but lost a lot to graduation. Potlatch may be a contender after knocking off Division 2 power Deary in their opener. Former Kamiah head coach Ryan Ball has taken over as head coach at Potlatch. Lapwai has been a contender in recent years and Clearwater Valley may step up as a contender as they had a very young team last year.
The Pirates have a tough test right out of the gate as they travel to Middleton on Saturday to play Valley, who returns most of the players from a squad that lost to Genesee in the first round of the state playoffs last year.
The first home game for the Pirates will be Friday, Sept. 7 against Troy. Homecoming will be against Genesee on Sept. 21 with their only other home game coming on Oct. 12 against Kamiah.

Coach Ryan Hasselstrom goes over what the Valley offense likes to run and what to key on with his defensive players at practice Monday evening.

The JV offense runs a play at practice on Monday. They get into action this Thursday with a game against Potlatch at Lapwai.
