Pirates rout Troy 88-6
The Prairie football team scored at will and posted their highest point total ever as they routed Troy 88-6 in their home opener at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 7.
Prairie even managed to put 6 points on the board before their offense even got on the field. Troy received the opening kickoff and was forced to punt from their own 18. Owen Anderson blocked the punt and then picked it up at the 6 and took it into the end zone for the game’s first points.
Troy came right back  as quarterback Rhett Sandquist scrambled away from the Prairie pass rush and wound up going 79 yards for the tying touchdown. Neither team was able to score on the 2-point try leaving the score at 6-6.Cole Martin races past a Troy defender on his way to the end zone. In the background is Derik Shears.
Troy tried an onside kick but Sam Mager recovered for the Pirates at the 45. It took the offense just 4 plays to cover 55 yards. Caleb McWilliams and Michael Schwartz each gained 9 yards for a first down.
Spencer Schumacher then completed a pass to Schwartz for 16 yards to move the ball to the Troy 21. After an encroachment penalty by Troy, Schumacher kept the ball and went around the left side for 16 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. Schumacher passed to Damian Forsmann for the 2-pointer to make it 14-6.
Prairie got the ball back as Troy was forced to punt again with Schwartz returning the punt 22 yards to the Troy 34. 3 plays later Cole Martin burst up the middle for 21 yards and another Prairie touchdown. McWilliams ran in the 2-pointer to make it 22-6.
Troy was again forced to punt and a straight up in the air punt only went 16 yards with the Pirates taking over at the 35. Prairie needed just 1 play to score again as Schumacher connected with Forsmann for the touchdown. Schwartz ran in the 2-pointer to make it 30-6.
Troy got a good kickoff return as Grayson Foster went 24 yards from the 12 to the 37. 3 plays netted just 1 yard and this time Troy went for it on fourth down with Forsmann knocking down the pass as Prairie took over at the Troy 38.
Four plays later Schumacher scored his second touchdown as he took the ball 22 yards into the end zone. He passed to Derik Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 38-6 with 1:17 still remaining in the first quarter.
Troy was forced to punt again. Brody Hasselstrom received the punt and handed off to Anderson on a reverse. Anderson carried the ball 16 yards to the Troy 34. 4 running plays ensued, 3 by Martin who carried the final 13 for another touchdown. The 2-point try came up short but Prairie now led 44-6.
Prairie kicked off but Troy’s return man fumbled the ball on a what-were-you-thinking attempt to lateral the ball. Anderson recovered at the Troy 27.
Forsmann went in at quarterback and Prairie picked up a first down on an 11 yard run by McWilliams that set up first and goal at the 6. The ball got knocked loose from Forsmann on the next play and Troy recovered at their own 5.
Troy failed to move the ball and it appeared the Pirates were going to get the ball inside the 10 after a bad snap. A 5-yard facemask penalty was just enough for a Troy first down. At that point Foster moved to quarterback and Sandquist to a receiver position. Foster twice connected with Sandquist for 19 yard gains to move the ball to the Prairie 47. That was Troy’s first play to start in Pirate territory.
Two plays later Foster connected with Boden Demeerleer for 20 yards to the 28.
Foster was dropped for losses on the next two plays, both times by Hasselstrom. Once for 4 yards and the other for 2 yards.
Sandquist moved back to quarterback and gained 13 yards on a fourth and 16 play giving Prairie the ball back at their own 21.
A 21 yard gain by McWilliams and a 9 yard run by Hasselstrom moved the ball to the Troy 49.
At that point Prairie set up a screen pass to the left side with Forsmann passing to Anderson. The defense was totally fooled as Troy had nobody on that side of the field. Although Anderson had several blockers, he didn’t need them as he ran untouched to the end zone. The 2-point try failed leaving Pririe with a 50-6 lead, which is where it stood at the half.
Owen Anderson, 22, gets a block on a Troy defender allowing Spencer Schumacher to go all the way for a touchdown. Other identifiable players are Hayden Uhlenkott, 23, and Reid Uptmor, 81.With a more than 40 point lead, the second half was played entirely with a running clock.
It didn’t take Prairie long to score in the second half as Shears received the second half kickoff at the Prairie 15 and returned the kick 85 yards for another Prairie touchdown. Again the 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 56-6.
A personal foul by Troy after an incomplete pass set the Trojans back to the 11 yard line and they wound up having to punt again. Schumacher blocked the punt and although the punter recovered the ball he was stopped at the 8 yard line where Prairie took over on downs.
Schumacher passed to Shears for 8 yards and another score. Schwartz then got the call for the 2-point try and covered about 50 yards to gain the 3 yards necessary for the 2 points as he started one way and reversed direction back the other way before crossing the goal line. That made it 64-6.
After the kickoff Mager intercepted Foster’s pass attempts at the Prairie 49.
It took Prairie just 1 play to score as Schumacher passed to Shears for 51 yards down the right sideline for the score. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 72-6.
Prairie got the ball back on downs at the Troy 37. With the JV offense on the field, Prairie picked up a first down before a sack of Zack Rambo forced the Pirates to turn the ball over on downs at the Troy 16.
Troy couldn’t move the ball and after an incomplete pass on fourth down, Prairie got the ball back at the Troy 18.
Tayden Hibbard carried the ball for 7 yards to the 11 then Hasselstrom finished off the drive with an 11 yard run to the left side for a touchdown. Rambo then passed to Lane Schumacher for the 2-pointer to make it 80-6.
Prairie got the ball right back when Troy fumbled the kickoff giving the Pirates the ball at the Troy 33.
Rambo carried for 16 yards on a keeper and then Hasselstrom picked up 8 yards and then 9 more for the game’s final touchdown. Hasselstrom added the 2-pointer to give Prairie their all-time high of 88 points.
For the game Hasselstrom had 8 carries for 57 yards to lead the rushing attack. McWilliams had 5 carries for 53 yards, Martin had 5 carries for 51 yards and Schumacher had 3 carries for 48 yards. Prairie had 247 yards rushing on 28 attempts.
Schumacher completed 5 of 6 passes for 121 yards and Forsmann completed 1 of 2 passes for 49 yards.
Shears had 3 receptions for 70 yards. Anderson had 1 for 49. Forsmann had 1 for 35 and Schwartz had 1 for 6.
Sandquist led Troy with 93 yards on 7 carries. Foster was 4 for 10 passing with an interception for 73 yards. Sandquist was 0 for 9 passing.
Sandquist caught 3 passes for 53 yards.
Defensively Shears led the way with 6 tackles. Hasselstrom had 5. Anderson and Martin had 4.5 each with Anderson also having a fumble recovery and a blocked punt. Schumacher had 3 plus a blocked punt. Dalton Ross had 3 tackles. Jesse Cronan had 2.5 tackles. Schwartz, Hayden Uhlenkott and Hibbard each had 2 tackles and McWilliams, Carson Schmidt, Uptmor, and Garrett Bunce had 1 each. John Gehring had ½ a tackle and Mager had an interception.
Prairie is now 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play. This week they travel to Riggins for a non-league game against Salmon River. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. Pacific time.

Damian Forsmann is about to catch a long pass for a touchdown.

Derik Shears makes a fingertip catch against Troy for a touchdown. He scored 3 touchdowns in the game, one on an 85 yard kickoff return to open the second half.

Brody Hasselstrom was able to pull this Troy defender into the end zone with him as he scored a late touchdown.

Spencer Schumacher tackles Troy’s quarterback with Carson Schmidt, 56, ready to help finish the play.

Carson Schmidt leads on a sweep by Michael Schwartz. Quarterback Spencer Schumacher is behind Schwartz.

Prairie fooled the Troy defense completely on a screen pass as Owen Anderson is all by himself except for a couple of Prairie blockers on a 49 yard touchdown play. Blockers are Garret Bunce and Carson Forsman.
