Pirates win big at Homecoming
What a difference a year can make in small school football as a rematch of last year’s state championship game turned out to be a lopsided 78-0 win for the Prairie Pirates over Genesee at Prairie’s Homecoming Friday, Sept. 21.Derik Shears leaps high to make a catch for big yardage against Genesee.
It could have been even more lopsided as subs and JV players started entering the game in the second quarter and played the entire second half, which was under a running clock.
It also didn’t help the Bulldogs as their one returning star player, quarterback Kolby Moser, sat out the game with an injury.
The game didn’t start that great for Prairie as they turned the ball over on downs at their own 46 on their opening possession.
The defense, with the help of a holding penalty, forced Genesee to punt and Prairie took over at their own 43 after a short 20 yard punt.
After an incomplete pass, Prairie kept to the running game and Spencer Schumacher scored 5 plays later on an option keeper around right end that covered 36 yards. The 2-point try failed and Prairie led 6-0.
Genesee was forced to punt again after gaining just 3 yards on 3 plays and the punt return was fumble but Owen Anderson recovered for the Pirates at the Genesee 39.
After an incomplete pass, Cole Martin picked up 8 yards to the left and on the next play ran a sweep to the right and raced 31 yards to the end zone for another Prairie touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed and Prairie led 12-0.
Genesee was again forced to punt thanks to Spencer Schumacher reading a reverse and tackling Jon Kopf for a 7 yard loss.
Mike Schwartz received the punt then handed off to Anderson who gained 22 yards to the Genesee 43.
Caleb McWilliams picked up 6 yards on first down and then Martin ran another sweep to the right for a 37 yard touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed as Prairie upped their lead to 18-0.
Genesee received the kickoff and after gaining their initial first down of the game on a Prairie penalty, threw an interception on the next play as Anderson picked off the ball and returned it to the Prairie 43.
Schumacher completed his first pass after 4 straight incompletions with Derik Shears coming back for an underthrown ball for a 36 yard gain. Schwartz picked up 2 yards then Schumacher found Damian Forsmann wide open for a 14 yard touchdown. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 26-0 with 2:21 left in the first quarter.
Genesee nearly got a score when they gained 41 yards on a screen pass to the Prairie 21 on their next possession but 2 plays later Schwartz intercepted a pass at the Prairie 19 and returned to the 22.
Schumacher connected with Shears over the middle for 52 yards to the Genesee 29. After 2 running plays were stopped for a net -1 yard, Schumacher found Dylan Schumacher wide open on the left side for a 30 yard scoring play on the first play of the second quarter. Spencer then passed to Dylan for the 2-pointer to make it 34-0.
Genesee wound up going backwards on their next possession and punted on a 4th and 29 play with Forsmann catching the punt and throwing a lateral across the field to Schwartz who took the ball and went 41 yards for a touchdown. Spencer Schumacher rain in the 2-pointer to make it 42-0.
Genesee was again forced to punt, this time from their own 11 after Spencer Schumacher dropped a runner for a 6 yard loss and Dean Johnson sacked the quarterback for a 12 yard loss on the next play.
Dylan Schumacher broke through and blocked the punt and then recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Spencer Schumacher pass to Shears for the 2-point to make it 50-0 with 8:17 left in the first half.
Genesee tried a fake punt on their next possession on 4th and 18 but came up 6 yards short as Prairie took over at their own 44.
Brody Hasselstrom and McWilliams alternated carrying the ball over 6 straight plays with McWilliams covering the final 12 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Prairie led 56-0 with 2:35 left in the half.
Genesee again had to punt  with Spencer Schumacher blocking the punt this time and recovering at the Genesee 9. A holding penalty set the Pirates back and the clock ran out with them at the 18.
Caleb McWilliams tackles a Genesee ballcarrier.Genesee got a 39 yard kickoff return from freshman Kole Riebold to start the second half. Hasselstrom made the touchdown saving tackle at the Prairie 35. Genesee then came up 5 yards short on fourth down and turned the ball over to Prairie at the 30.
It took the Pirates just 1 play to score again as Hasselstrom took a pitch to the left from backup quarterback Forsmann and raced 70 yards to the end zone. With the 2-point try failing, Prairie now led 62-0.
Riebold had another long kickoff return of 45 yards to the Prairie 30. A couple of penalties set back the Bulldogs and the Pirates took over on downs at their own 43.
