Pirates win 62-0 at Potlatch
The Prairie football team rolled to another easy league win as they beat Potlatch 62-0 at Potlatch Saturday, Sept. 29. It was their second straight shutout win.
The game was moved to Saturday at noon due to lighting issues at the Potlatch field.
Potlatch received the opening kickoff but was forced to punt.Hayden Uhlenkott tackles Potlatch’s quarterback. Part of a defensive effort that resulted in Prairie’s second straight shutout.
Prairie took over at their own 36 and went to the passing game. Spencer Schumacher completed a deep pass down the right side to Damian Forsmann for 31 yards on Prairie’s first offensive play of the game. He hit Forsmann for another 9 yards over the middle on the next play. A 4-yard completion to Derik Shears set the Pirates up at the Potlatch 20. Schumacher ran the ball down to the 7 on the next play to set up first and goal at the 7. After a fumbled snap lost a yard, Michael Schwartz went over the right side for 7 yards to the 1. Schumacher pushed through the middle for the touchdown on the next play. Schumacher then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Potlatch had their best offensive possession as they picked up 3 of the 4 first downs they would get the entire game. Kenon Brown carried twice for 6 yards each for their initial first down. He added a run of 18 yards for the second and quarterback Justin Nicholson picked up 16 on a scramble to set up a first down at the Prairie 21. The drive came to a halt though 2 plays later when Tyler Howard fumbled on a running play and Shears recovered at the 21.
Prairie faced a third and 11 after a false start penalty and a 4 yard loss on a fumble but Schumacher connected with Schwartz for 12 yards and a first down.
Owen Anderson picked up 8 yards and Schumacher connected with Shears on a quick pass to the right for 10 more for a first down at the Prairie 49. Schumacher then went deep down the field to a wide open Forsmann for a 51 yard scoring play. Schumacher then hit Forsmann on a slant pass for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
An onside kick attempt didn’t go anywhere near the required 10 yards for Prairie to be able to recover and Potlatch had great field position at the Prairie 43. 3 plays netted the Loggers just 1 yard and the fourth down pass attempt sailed high as Prairie took over at their own 42.
Schumacher passed over the middle to Caleb McWilliams for 19 yards then ran it himself for another 12. Schumacher then hit Shears down the right side for a 27 yard touchdown. Schumacher passed to Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 early in the second quarter.
Potlatch was forced to punt with Prairie taking over at the Potlatch 48. Cole Martin picked up 16 yards around the left side. Then came some confusion as play was stopped but apparently it was just a non-play as no penalty was called. Potlatch coaches thought it should have been a false start against Prairie but the ball was respotted at the same spot. Schumacher then connected with Martin over the middle for 32 yards and another touchdown. Schumacher passed to Brody Hasselstrom for the 2-pointer to make it 32-0.
Potlatch picked up their only other first down of the game on their next possession but then were again forced to punt after Schumacher sacked Nicholson for a 5 yard loss on third and 10.
Schwartz came up with the punt at the Prairie 6 and returned it to the 17.
A great catch by Dylan Schumacher, where his height advantage allowed him to make the catch despite good coverage, gained 48 yards to the Loggers’ 24. Prairie faced a fourth and 1 at the 15 but Spencer Schumacher ran a quarterback sneak for 3 yards and a first down.
An apparent touchdown pass to Martin for 9 yards got called back due to a holding penalty. No matter, Schumacher just tossed a screen pass to the left side to Anderson who used his blockers to take the ball 23 yards to the end zone. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 40-0 which is where the score stood at halftime.
The 40 point margin made it a running clock for the second half.
Prairie received the second half kickoff and took over at their own 24. Schwartz nearly picked up a quick first down as he was stopped about a foot short of the marker on a 9 yard gain around right end.
The next play lost 2 yards setting up a third and 3. Martin took the ball to the right side and cut back to the middle, getting past the defense and then outracing them to the end zone for a 68 yard scoring play. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 48-0.
Prairie got the ball right back when Dylan Schumacher intercepted a pass. It could have been his second one as earlier he had jumped a pass out in the left flat with nothing but green grass in front of him but couldn’t hang on.
Prairie’s offense stalled for the only time in the game as Schumacher misfired on 2 passes, the second on fourth down, giving Potlatch the ball back at their 42.
Potlatch couldn’t move the ball and had to punt again. Schwartz received the ball at the Prairie 20 then handed off to Anderson on a reverse with Anderson picking up 17 yards to the Prairie 37.
Forsmann moved into the quarterback lost at that point and Prairie ran the ball on 10 straight plays. The big gainers were an 18 yard pickup on a sweep to the right by Schwartz and 13 yards on a run to the right by Hasselstrom.
Prairie moved to a first and goal at the 1 where Forsmann attempted the only pass of the drive, missing on an attempt to Schwartz. Schwartz running it in on the next play. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 54-0 lead.
Potlatch went for it on fourth and 3 from their own 35 and were stopped 2 yards short.
The JV offense took the field and needed just 2 plays to score again. After an incomplete pass by Cole Schlader on first down, Hasselstrom took the ball around right end for 36 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Cronan ran in the 2-pointer to make it 62-0 with 3:30 left to play.
Potlatch was stopped on fourth down on their ensuing possession and Prairie took over at the Loggers 36 and didn’t even need to run a play to let the clock run out.
The Pirates wound up with 519 yards of offense. They had 243 yards rushing on 31 attempts and Schumacher completed 13 of 16 passes for 276 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Martin led the rushing attack with 91 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown. Hasselstrom had 63 yards on 4 carries with a touchdown. Schwartz had 45 yards on 9 carries with a touchdown. Schumacher carried the ball 8 times for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Forsmann caught 3 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. Shears caught 3 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Sam Mager caught 2 passes for 10 yards.  Martin caught 1 for 32 and a touchdown. Anderson caught 1 for 23 and a touchdown. Dylan Schumacher caught 1 pass for 48 yards. McWilliams caught 1 for 19 and Schwartz caught 1 for 12. Forsmann and Schlader were each 0 for 1 passing.
Potlatch was held to just 68 total yards. They had 61 yards rushing on 34 attempts and their passers were 1 for 7 with 1 interception and just 7 yards gained.
Brown had over half their offense with 38 yards on just 6 carries.
Defensively Anderson and Mager each had 5 tackles. Hayden Uhlenkott had 4.5 tackles. Spencer Schumacher had 4 tackles and a sack. Carson Schmidt had 3 tackles. Dylan Schumacher had 2 tackles and an interception. Shears had 2 tackles and a fumble recovery. Dean Johnson, Hasselstrom and Carson Forsman each had 2 tackles. Reid Uptmor, Martin, Tayden Hibbard, Schlader, Cronan , Dalton Ross and Garrett Bunce each had 1 tackle and McWilliams had ½ a tackle.
Prairie is now 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. This week they match up against fellow league unbeaten Lapwai on the Wildcats home field Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in what could amount to the league championship game.
