Pirates win 68-12 at Lapwai
In a statement game between the teams perceived to be the top two teams in the White Pine League Division 1, the Prairie Pirates routed Lapwai 68-12 at Lapwai Friday, Oct. 5.
With the win Prairie improves to 4-0 in league play and 5-1 overall.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and with the help of a couple of offside penalties against Lapwai, moved to midfield.
On fourth and 4 from the Lapwai 45 Prairie quarterback Spencer Schumacher evaded Lapwai’s pass rush and connected down the left sideline with Derik Shears who came back on the ball to make the catch and then juked his way past the defenders for a 45 yard touchdown play. The 2-point run came up short as Prairie took an early 6-0 lead.
Lapwai answered right back with quarterback Payton Sobotta connecting with Kendall Leighton 3 times for 52 yards on a 65 yard drive to set up first and goal at the 5. Tui Moliga ran the ball in for the tying score. Dylan Schumacher then broke up the 2-point pass attempt to leave the score tied at 6-6.
Prairie came right back with Spencer Schumacher gaining 22 yards to move the ball into Lapwai territory. On third and 10, Schumacher found Shears open for a 42 yard gain to the 6 yard line.
On second and goal from the 2, Michael Schwartz ran a sweep around right end for the go-ahead touchdown. The 2 point try again came up short as Prairie led 12-6.
Lapwai moved into Prairie territory on a 14 yard pass from Sobotta to Leighton but then the defense stiffened. Carson Schmidt stopped Moliga in the backfield for a 1 yard loss. Caleb McWilliams then sacked Sobotta for a 3 yard loss. Sobotta then misfired on 2 passes to Leighton and Prairie took over on downs at the Lapwai 47.
Schumacher passed to Shears for an 11 yard gain and on the next play Cole Martin took off over the right side and broke free for a 36 yard scoring play. Again the 2-point try failed as Prairie led 18-6.
A 25 yard completion to Leighton moved Lapwai to the Prairie 40. On the next play Schwartz tackled Moliga for a 3 yard loss then Sobotta missed on 3 straight passes as Prairie took over on their own 43.
A holding penalty had Prairie facing a 2nd down and 20. Schumacher connected on a middle screen to Owen Anderson who took the ball 58 yards to the 9 where a Lapwai defender managed to knock the ball out of his hands with Lapwai recovering at the 9.
Lapwai moved the ball out to the 36 where Prairie got the ball back when Dylan Schumacher intercepted a pass intended for Leighton. Schumacher intercepted at the Lapwai 47 and returned the ball to the 38.
Prairie then ran the ball 5 straight times with Martin carrying on 4 of them. Martin wound up going in from the 1 for the touchdown. Again the 2-point try failed and prairie led 24-6.
On Lapwai’s first play after the kickoff, Schwartz came in unblocked on a blitz and sacked Sobotta for a 10 yard loss. That led to a fourth and 12 for the Wildcats. Sobotta lined up in the shotgun like they were going for it and then attempted a punt. Schmidt wound up with the ball at the Lapwai 37 after the ball hit a Lapwai lineman.
2 plays later the Pirates scored again when Spencer Schumacher connected with Damian Forsmann over the middle for a 35 yard scoring play. Martin then scored the game’s first 2-point conversion on a run to the right to make it 32-6.

Lapwai tried an onside kick with Hayden Uhlenkott recovering at the Prairie 46.
Prairie had to overcome an offside penalty when Schwartz picked up 27 yards on third down to move the ball to the 19.
A 9 yard pass from Schumacher to Forsmann set up first and goal at the 9.
Owen Anderson knocked the ball loose from Lapwai quarterback Payton Sobotta as he made a sack. Dean Johnson wound up recovering the fumble. On the next play the line opened up a huge hole on the right side and Schwartz was able to go 9 yards untouched for the score. Schumacher passed to Anderson for the 2-point conversion to make it 40-12 with 34 seconds left in the half.
Lapwai received the second half kickoff and took over at their 27. After Dean Johnson and Anderson combined to stop Moliga for no gain, Lapwai fumbled the ball away on a mishandled snap. McWilliams recovered at the Lapwai 27.
McWilliams picked up 9 yards then Schwartz gained 12 to set up first and goal at the 6.
A penalty on Lapwai moved the ball to the 3. 2 plays later McWilliams went in from the 1 and Anderson ran in the 2-pointer to make it 48-12.
On Lapwai’s second play following the kickoff Anderson sacked Sobotta and stripped the ball with Johnson recovering at the Lapwai 21.
Two plays later Schumacher passed to Shears for a 16 yard touchdown. Schumacher pass to McWilliams for the 2-pointer and a 56-12 lead with 8:54 left in the third quarter. At that point the game went into running clock mode.
Lapwai went for it on fourth and 10 from their own 35 and Anderson tackled Moliga for a 1 yard loss on a pass play.
Forsmann took over at quarterback and Prairie moved the ball to the 16 on 4 running plays. Forsmann then passed to Shears in the end zone for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 62-12.
Lapwai punted on 4th and 9 from their own 36 with Prairie taking over at their own 29.
After an incomplete pass, Prairie ran the ball 4 straight times for a total of 24 yards. On another pass play, Lapwai was called for roughing the passer which moved the ball to the 33.
Dalton Ross picked up 4 yards and Forsmann followed with a keeper for 17 yards. Three more runs by Ross gained just shy of 10 yards as Prairie faced a fourth and inches at the 2. Forsmann got Lapwai to jump offside, giving Prairie a first down at the 1.
Forsmann then scored on a sneak to make it 68-12 as the 2-point try failed.
With the JV defense in the game, Lapwai moved the ball through the air but time ran out on them at the Prairie 25. Until that final drive Lapwai had been held to -8 yards in the second half.

Spencer Schumacher carries the ball for the Pirates. It appears he may be out of action for at least a couple of games after suffering a knee injury in the game.

Owen Anderson cuts inside a block by Carson Schmidt on his way to a 58 yard gain. Unfortunately he had the ball knocked loose at the end of the run but Prairie got it back a few plays later on an interception.

Cole Martin stiffarms a Lapwai defender on his way to a big gain.

Caleb McWilliams and Carson Schmidt team up to tackle Lapwai's Tui Moliga for a loss.

The Prairie linemen opened up a huge hole for Michael Schwartz to run through for a touchdown against Lapwai. That’s Carson Schmidt
making a block to the left and we believe Dean Johnson blocking to the right.
