Pirates win big on Senior Night
The Prairie football team took over sole possession of first place in the White Pine League as they smothered Kamiah 62-0 on Senior Night Friday, Oct. 12 at Cottonwood.Prairie defenders lived in Kamiah’s backfield as Carson Schmidt, Caleb McWilliams and Michael Schwartz stuff a Kamiah runner for a loss.
Seniors Spencer Schumacher, Caleb McWilliams, Michael Schwartz, Carson Schmidt and Dylan Schumacher were honored before the game as were senior video tech Kolleen Hasselstrom and senior cheerleaders Kodie Tidwell, Madison Hinkelman, Hailey Thompson, Noelle Uhlenkott, Julia Wemhoff and Emma Gehring.
The Pirate defense completely shut down the Kubs holding them to minus 8 yards in the first half with no first downs and just 5 total yards and 2 first downs for the game. The second first down came on the final play of the game.
The Pirated defensive front totally dominated the Kubs offensive line penetrating to tackle runners for loss of 15 of 26 running plays.
Meanwhile the offense rolled up 523 despite missing starting quarterback Spencer Schumacher, who is out at least 2 more weeks with a knee injury suffered in the Lapwai game.
Damian Forsmann stepped in at quarterback and kept the offense rolling.
Kamiah’s first possession featured losses on their first 2 plays as Schwartz tackled Titus Oatman for a 6 yards loss and Schmidt tackled quarterback Chad Simmons for a 5 yard loss. Kamiah punted with Prairie taking over at their own 48.
Prairie picked up 8 yards on 3 rushes and induced Kamiah’s defense to jump offside for their initial first down. McWilliams went for 6 yards and Schwartz for 8 for another first down. After misfiring on his first pass, Forsmann connected with McWilliams for 10 yards on a first down at the 15.
Schwartz went up the middle for 5 and then ran a sweep around right end for 10 yards and the game’s first touchdown. The 2-point try was stopped short for a 6-0 Pirate lead.
Two more running plays were stopped for losses for Kamiah leading to another punt. Schwartz returned the ball 8 yards to the Prairie 48.
Forsmann passed to Owen Anderson for 13 yards and a first down. A holding penalty had Prairie facing 2nd and 21 but Forsmann connected with Sam Mager over the middle for 24 and another first down. A 13 yard pass to McWilliams and 3 running plays netting 10 yards gave Prairie a first and goal at the 3.
A fumble cost the Pirates 7 yards and Prairie was stopped short on fourth down as Kamiah took over on their own 5.
Anderson tackled Oatman for a 3 yard loss and on the next play Schmidt and Hayden Uhlenkott combined to tackle Oatman in the end zone for a safety that made it 8-0 for the Pirates.
Derik Shears took the free kick from Kamiah at the 50 and returned it to the 34.
Cole Martin converted a fourth down and 3 with a 4 yard run for a first down. Forsmann then connected with Shears down the left side for 18 yards to set up first and goal at the 5. 2 plays later McWilliams pushed through the middle for 2 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point try was stopped leaving Priarie with a 14-0 lead.
Kamiah netted just 2 yards in 3 plays and punted again. Prairie took over at their own 34.
Forsmann ran a keeper around the right side of the line for 14 yards and 3 plays later connected with Shears for a 29 yard pass play to the 16. Martin ran a sweep around right end on the next play for Prairie’s third touchdown. Forsmann passed to McWilliams for the 2-pointer to make it 22-0.
Kamiah again had to punt after gaining just 3 yards in 3 plays with Prairie taking over at the Kamiah 43.
On second and 2 from the 35, Forsmann passed to Schwartz, whose defender fell down, leaving Schwartz an open lane to the end zone for a touchdown. Forsmann again passed to Schwartz for the 2-pointer to make it 30-0.
Kamiah went for it on fourth down as they faced a fourth and 2 at their own 46 but Dean Johnson stopped Oatman short after just a 1 yard gain and Prairie took over.
Forsmann passed to Anderson for an apparent 54 yard touchdown but a holding penalty wiped out most of the gain as Anderson wound up with just 22 yards. Martin converted the first down with a 6 yard carry on the next play.
Facing a fourth and 5 from the 31, Prairie called timeout and set up a hook and ladder play. Forsmann passed out to the left to Martin who lateraled back to Anderson who got to keep the touchdown this time. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 36-0 lead just a minute before halftime.

Prairie received the second half kickoff and needed just 3 plays to add another touchdown and send the game into running clock mode. Forsmann passed to Shears deep down the middle, beating double coverage for a 49 yard scoring play. Forsmann ran in the 2-pointer to make it 44-0.
It was 3 plays for no gain and another punt for Kamiah with Prairie taking over at their own 45. Forsmann was sacked for a 16 yard loss on second and 2 but came right back with a 19 yard completion to Shears for a first down. McWilliams then burst through the middle for 21 yards to the 13.
After a couple of fumbled snaps led to a third and 11 from the 14, Forsmann passed out to the right side to Shears who took the ball into the end zone for another touchdown. The 2-point pass fell incomplete making it 50-0.
Kamiah again punted after facing fourth and 13. Cole Schlader received the punt and tried to lateral the ball back to Schwartz. Schwartz was able to pick up the bounced lateral and taking it to the Kamiah 30 where he attempted a lateral with Dylan Schumacher recovering the ball at the 33.
McWilliams powered his was through the middle for a 33 yard touchdown on the next play. After the 2-point try failed it was now 56-0.
On the first possession of the fourth quarter Kamiah finally picked up a first down as 2 runs netted 11 yards. 4 plays later it was fourth and 14 and they had to punt again. Prairie took over at their own 29 and the JV offense proceeded to overcome a couple of penalties and add another touchdown.
Brody Hasselstrom had 3 carries in the drive for 23, 20 and 14 yards with the latter going for a touchdown. That made it 62-0 with 2:08 left to play.
For the game Prairie had 226 yards rushing on 40 attempts and 297 yards passing for 523 total yards. McWilliams had 85 yards rushing on 9 carries with Hasselstrom adding 57 yards on 3 carries, Schwartz 38 on 11 carries and Martin 27 on 5 carries.
Forsmann was 15 for 20 passing for 287 yards with Schlader completing 1 of 2 passes for 10 yards. Shears had 5 receptions for 129 yards. Anderson had 3 for 40 yards plus another 30 on a lateral. McWilliams had 4 catches for 28 yards with Schwartz catching 1 for 35 and Mager 1 for 24. Tayden Hibbard had 1 catch for 10 yards and Martin 1 for 1 yard before lateraling off to Anderson.
Kamiah had minus 13 yards rushing on 26 attempts and Simmons was 4 for 9 passing for 18 yards.
Anderson led the defense with 5.5 tackles, 2 for loss. Schmidt had 4.5 tackles with 2 sacks. Johnson had 4.5 tackles with 1 sack. Garrett Bunce had 3 tackles, 1.5 for loss. Martin had 3 tackles, 1 for loss. Mager and Schwartz each had 2 tackles. McWilliams had 1.5 tackles for losses. Shears had 1.5 tackles. Schlader had 1 tackle for loss. Dylan Schumacher, Hasselstrom, Jesse Cronan, Reid Uptmor, and Carson Forsman each had 1 tackle. Hibbard, Dalton Ross and Lane Schumacher each had 1 assisted tackle.
Prairie is now 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in league play. Their next game is against Clearwater Valley at Kooskia this Friday night at 7 p.m. A win there would clinch both a state playoff berth and the league championship.
