Pirates clinch league title
The Prairie football teamed clinched a state tournament berth and the league championship with a 54-8 win over Clearwater Valley at Kooskia Friday, Oct. 19.
For the second straight week the defense throttled an opponent that looked to contend for the league title. C.V. gained just 71 total yards and 55 of that were on their touchdown play. Prairie meanwhile rolled up 508 total yards with Cole Martin gaining 203 yards rushing on 18 carries. Caleb McWilliams also went over 100 yards rushing with 127 on 13 carries and Prairie tallied 398 yards rushing on 51 attempts.
The opening drive of the game was all rushing plays as it took the Pirates just 5 plays to cover 61 yards. McWilliams carried 3 times for 45 of those yards including the final 28 for the touchdown. Michael Schwartz carried twice for 16 yards and added the 2-pointer conversion as Prairie took an 8-0 lead.
C.V. was forced to punt after gaining 7 yards on 3 plays with prairie taking over at their own 25.
Martin went 8 yards on the first play and then broke free for a 66 yard run before being stopped at the 1 yard line. McWilliams went up the middle for the touchdown on the next play. Damian Forsmann ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
C.V.’s next possession last just 2 plays as Schwartz blitzed quarterback Aiden Martinez for a sack and forced a fumble which Dylan Schumacher scooped up at the 20 and took in for a touchdown. Schwartz added the 2-pointer to make it 24-0.
Prairie tried an onside kick but C.V. recovered and a 10 yard penalty against Prairie gave the Rams the ball at the Prairie 40. 3 plays later they were at the 44 and punting again.
Prairie took over at the 20 after the punt went into the end zone. Prairie moved the ball to the C.V. 20 before coming up short on fourth down as C.V. took over at their 42. 
Two plays later C.V. got on the scoreboard on a 55 yard run by tailback Bubba Summers. Summers added the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 24-8.
C.V. kicked off to Derik Shears who broke several tackles on a 36 yard return that set Prairie up at the 50.
Prairie needed 6 plays to score with Martin carrying on 5 of them for 43 yards. Martin ended the drive with a 5 yard run for the touchdown. Forsmann passed to Shears for the 2-pointer as Prairie quickly answered C.V.’s score to make it 32-8.
C.V. was forced to punt again and got a great roll on the punt as Prairie wound up taking over at their own 7 yard line.
Runs of 17 yards by Martin and 34 by McWilliams along with a 12 yard pass completion from Forsmann to Shears set Prairie up with a first and goal at the C.V. 9. 
A fumbled pitch wound up costing the Pirates 10 yards and they ended up turning the ball over on downs at the 15.
C.V. gained just 2 yards on 3 plays and had to punt again with Prairie taking over at their 38.
Martin gained 24 yards on runs of 9 and 15 yards. Forsmann then connected for 30 yards to Shears to set up first and goal at the 10. Martin carried for 8 down to the 2 and McWilliams went into the end zone on the next play. Martin added the 2 pointer to make it 40-8 with 1:44 left in the half.
C.V. was forced to punt again but a bad snap wound up giving Prairie the ball at the C.V. 25 yard line. After an incompletion, Forsmann wound up connecting with Dylan Schumacher in the end zone for another touchdown. Forsmann passed to Schumacher for the 2-pointer to make it 48-8 and set up a running clock in the second half.

Also shown are Dylan Schumacher and Carson Schmidt.C.V. received the second half kickoff and picked up a couple of first downs and moved to the Prairie 40 before Schwartz tackled Martinez for a 6 yard loss on a run and Owen Anderson sacked Martinez for a 10 yard loss on an attempted pass. That forced a C.V. punt and Prairie took over at their own 15.
Prairie picked up 20 yards on 3 runs and then ran what looked like another run but wound up with Schwartz passing downfield to Shears for a 21 yard gain.
2 more runs moved the ball to the 34 before Prairie committed their only turnover of the game as C.V. Intercepted a pass by Forsmann at the 6 and returned it to the 44.
C.V. didn’t keep the ball long though as Summers fumbled at the end of a 6 yard gain with Carson Schmidt recovering at the 50.
Prairie moved the ball downfield with the help of a couple of C.V. penalties as the Rams were getting frustrated and were called for a late hit and for roughing the passer. Martin finished off the drive with a 4 yard run for the game’s final points as the 2-point try failed.
C.V. had to punt again and Prairie ran out much of the remaining clock by keeping the ball on the ground for 6 straight plays. The drive stalled at the 25 as C.V. took over on downs but had time for just 2 more plays before the clock ran out.
Forsmann completed 7 of 15 passes with 1 interception for 89 yards. Schwartz was 1 for 1 for 21 yards. Shears caught 4 passes for 58 yards with Anderson catching 2 for 23. Schumacher caught 1 for 25 and Sam Mager 1 for 4 yards.
C.V. had 71 yards rushing on 31 attempts and 0 yards passing.
Anderson led the team defensively with 12 tackles and 1 sack. McWilliams had 4.5 tackles. Dean Johnson and Mager had 3 tackles each. Schmidt had 2.5 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.  Schwartz had 2 tackles, 1 sack and forced fumble. Martin had 2 tackles and a sack. Brody Hasselstrom had 2 tackles. Hayden Uhlenkott had 1 tackle.
Prairie is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. Their next game will be a first round state playoff game against either Oakley or Raft River Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome. The game scheduled at Wallace this coming Saturday has been cancelled.
