Matthew Payne awarded CIAA scholarship
Central Idaho Art Association (CIAA) awarded Matthew Payne the 2018 Scholarship of $200.00. CIAA gets limited applicants for the Art Scholarship offered to local Grangeville, Cottonwood and Clearwater area students. When Mr. Payne was asked why he thinks students do not choose art in college he said, “Studying art in college is a risk that some people are not willing to take. It is nontraditional and constantly changing, so many people are intimidated by the dynamics of the field of art.”
Matthew Payne is in a four -year Graphic Communication program at Lewis-Clark State College and is working on a minor in art. He explains that Graphic Communication ties together art skills and computer skills to create unique works. It allows him to experiment with many different mediums and techniques while learning about both Graphic Communication and art. His favorite art medias include traditional ink and watercolors, he also enjoys using acrylic paints and color pencil. He enjoys film/ video editing.
What kind of job opportunities can you get with an art major? Mr. Payne answers, “The opportunities for Graphic Communication majors are abundant. Careers in illustration, advertisement, branding, photography, and film are all part of Graphic Communications, in addition to many more. At this point, I am most interested in illustration.” He noted that his interest in art, and that creativity and individual thinking were encouraged by art teachers, Debbie Fournier (a CIAA member), and Patrick Phillips who taught art and art history. Payne notes that combining his interest in art and computers led him to taking Graphic Communications. Right now he notes that his goals are to experiment with a wide variety of art, subjects, and media, and seeing how it all can tie into his major. Projects on which he has worked include a submission to a University of Idaho art contest, an art magazine highlighting local artists, a cover design for Inland 360, and he is currently creating a card game.
