Pirates win tournament
The Prairie Pirates finished the 2018 portion of their season by winning the championship of the Purple Bracket at the Truckstop.com Christmas Tournament held at the College of Idaho in Caldwell Dec. 20-22.
They opened on Thursday with a 47-43 win over Nyssa, Oregon. They followed up with a 52-44 win over Marsing on Friday. On Saturday they beat Liberty Charter 35-27 in a rematch of last year’s consolation final at the state tournament.
Vs. Nyssa
Against Nyssa, Prairie took a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter but fell behind 21-22 at halftime.
They still trailed by 1 point after 3 quarters at 33-34.
They outscored Nyssa 14-9 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Spencer Schumacher had 22 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates with Dylan Schumacher adding 9 points and 5 rebounds despite battling an illness.
Prairie was also missing a couple of players due to a disciplinary issue but added a couple of JV players to the roster for the tournament.
Devin Ross added 8 points with Cole Schlader scoring 6 and Derik Shears 2.

Vs. Marsing
In the game against Marsing on Friday the Pirates built a 13 point halftime lead and held off the Huskies in the second half to win by 8.
Prairie led 11-5 after one quarter and 28-15 at the half. Marsing cut the deficit to 37-27 by the end of the third quarter but could gain just 2 points on the Pirates in the fourth.
Spencer Schumacher again led the Pirates in scoring with 20 points and added 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Ross scoring 18 with 9 rebounds. Dylan Schumacher had 9 points and 5 assists. Schlader scored 3 and Shears scored 2.
Ross had 3 triples in the game while Spencer Schumacher scored a pair of 3-pointers.

Vs. Liberty Charter
The championship game against the Liberty Charter Patriots was either a great defensive battle or a game between two tired teams who were playing their third game in 3 days.Dylan Schumacher shoots over a Liberty Charter defender.
The score was still 0-0 until Prairie finally put points on the board at the 4:23 mark of the first quarter when Spencer Schumacher scored on a putback.
Over a minute later Shears scored on a lay-up to make it 4-0.
Liberty Charter finally scored with 2:42 left in the first quarter to make it 4-2.Spencer Schumacher made it 6-2 nearly a minute later and that’s how it stood at the end of the quarter.
Liberty Charter opened the second quarter scoring with a free throw and that turned out to be their only point of the period.
Shears scored inside with 5:33 left in the half to make it 8-3 and that’s where the score stood until Spencer Schumacher scored on a putback with 5 seconds remaining to make it 10-3 at the half.
Prairie could have had at least 4 more baskets in the first half but had that many waived off by offensive fouls. Schlader got whistled 3 times.
Liberty Charter finally found some offense in the third quarter as Alex Bistriceanu sank a couple of 3-pointers and Cole Hinnenkamp scored 7 points.
Prairie managed a back cut lay-up by Shears, 2 free throws by Spencer Schumacher and another lay-up by Shears as the score was tied at 16-16 after 3 quarters.
Liberty Charter scored a free throw to open the fourth for their first, and only lead of the game at 16-17. 
40 seconds later Spencer Schumacher scored inside to put Prairie back on top 18-17.
A blocked shot by Ross led to a drive to the hoop by Dylan Schumacher and a steal by Shears led to a pair of free throws by Dylan for a 22-17 lead.
Liberty scored to break the 6-0 run but a basket by Ross and a free throw by Dylan Schumacher made it 25-19.
Liberty was able to get back within 4 at 27-23 after a 3-point play by Bristriceanu.
Over the final 2 minutes Prairie went to a spread to run clock and made free throws. Prairie got 2 free throws each by Dylan Schumacher and Ross to push the lead up to 8 at 31-23
After a Liberty free throw, Schlader and Spencer Schumacher each hit 1 of 2 at the line then Spencer hit a pair at the line for a 35-24 lead with 30 seconds to play.
Bistriceanu sank his third triple of the game for the final points with 25 seconds left.
Spencer Schumacher led in scoring again with 15 points with Shears adding 8, Dylan Schumacher 7, Ross 4 and Schlader 1.
Prairie controlled the boards 39-28 with Spencer Schumacher grabbing 13 and Ross 10.
Ross had 3 steals while Sam Mager and Dylan Schumacher had 2 each. Ross and Owen Anderson each had 2 assists. Ross had 2 blocked shots and Spencer and Dylan Schumacher each had 1.
Prairie was 11 for 33 from the field, 33%, and 13 for 19 at the line, 68%. Liberty Charter was 9 for 47 from the field, 19%, and 6 for 14 at the line, 43%.
After the game Spencer Schumacher, Dylan Schumacher and Ross were all named to the all-tournament team.
Prairie is now 6-3 on the season and is off until Jan. 3 when they host Grangeville.
