Pirates split non-league games
The Prairie Pirates split a pair of non-league home games last week to start the 2019 portion of their season. On Thursday, Jan. 3 they gained a season split with Grangeville by winning 56-54. On Friday, Jan. 4, they were able to stay with Moscow for a half before succumbing 39-52.
Vs. Grangeville
Prairie lost by 10 at Grangeville earlier this year during the Idaho County Shootout so it was nice to get a little revenge.
Prairie led by 3 at the end of the first quarter, 15-12, and maintained that lead at halftime, 31-28.
Prairie added a point to the lead after 3 quarters, taking a 45-41 lead into the fourth.
They led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter before Grangeville came back by hitting some 3-pointers to make it close at the end.
Devin Ross led the Pirates with 19 points with Spencer Schumacher adding 16. Damian Forsmann scored 8, Sam Mager 7, Dylan Schumacher 4 and Taylor Ott 2.
Grangeville wound up with six 3-pointers in the game to just 2 for Prairie, both by Ross.
Ross led the team with 7 rebounds and Dylan Schumacher had 9 assists.
The JV team suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Grangeville 23-40.

Vs. Moscow
The Pirates were able to stay with the taller, more athletic Moscow Bears for a half, but a 0-13 run to start the second half led to the loss.Sam Mager sets a pick for Damian Forsmann in the game against Moscow.
Moscow jumped out to a 0-6 lead to start the game with Dylan Schumacher scoring Prairie’s first 2 points at the free throw line at the 5:44 mark.
Two baskets and two free throws by Spencer Schumacher and a basket by Dylan Schumacher cut the lead to 10-11 late in the quarter.
Moscow added a late free throw to make it 10-12 at the quarter break.
Owen Anderson passed to Spencer Schumacher for the tying lay-up to open the second quarter.
After a Moscow basket, Mager sank two free throws to again tie the game at 14-14.
Moscow took a 14-18 lead but a basket inside by Spencer Schumacher cut the lead to 2. After a Moscow free throw, Dylan scored on a great pass from Ross to pull Prairie within 1 at 18-19.
Moscow hit the first 3 pointer of the game to push the lead back to 3 but a steal by Mager led to another pair of free throws to pull Prairie within 2 at 20-22. 
A late Moscow basket made it 20-24 at the half.
In the second half Moscow tightened up and intensified their defense and got off to that 0-13 run to turn a 4-point lead into a 17-point lead. The Bears made their first 5 shots of the half while Prairie missed their first 6.
Dylan Schumacher finally broke through for Prairie with a basket on a feed from Ross with 2:38 left in the quarter. Cole Schlader followed with a basket to cut the lead to 24-37 but Moscow answered with 2 free throws. A free throw by Schlader closed out the third quarter with Prairie down 25-39.
Moscow then scored the first 6 in the fourth quarter to push their lead to 20 points. Their biggest lead came 1:27 later at 27-49.
Prairie outscored the Bears 12-3 the rest of the way but it was too little, too late.
Spencer Schumacher was the leading scorer with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Dylan Schumacher scored 11. Mager scored 4, Forsmann and Schlader 3 each and Anderson 2.
Prairie was close on the boards but Moscow had a 35-39 advantage.
Ross, Mager and Dylan Schumacher each had 2 steals in the game while Dylan had 4 assists and Ross had 3.
Prairie was 14 for 43 from the field, 33%, and 9 for 20 at the line, 45%. Moscow was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 11 for 18 at the line, 61%.
Prairie is now 7-4 on the season and 3-1 in league play.
The JV team lost their second straight game as they fell 37-60 to the Bears.
Cole Schlader did all he could to keep Prairie in the game with 21 points but the rest of the team struggled against a Moscow team that had a height advantage at every position and was just as good, if not better, athletically.
Prairie trailed 5-11 after one quarter. 
In the second Moscow scored first for a 5-13 lead then Schlader scored 6 straight to get the lead down to 2.
A 2-13 run by Moscow followed and Prairie never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way.
Prairie trailed 19-31 at the half and 32-51 after 3 quarters.
In addition to Schlader, Kyle Schwartz scored 5 points, Brody Hasselstrom scored 4, Lane Schumacher 3, Hayden Uhlenkott 2 and Zach Rambo and Travis Alfrey 1 each.
Prairie was outrebounded 36-54. Uhlenkott and Schlader had 7 each for Prairie with Hasselstrom adding 6 rebounds.
Schlader, Hasselstrom and Tyler Wemhoff each had 2 steals and Uhlenkott, Schlader and Rambo each had 1 assist.
Prairie was 9 for 43 from the field, 21%, and 19 for 37 at the line, 51%. Moscow as 27 for 70 from the field, 39%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%.
