Pirates win 2 of 3
The Prairie Pirates won 2 of their 3 games played this past week. They started with a home loss to Lapwai, 46-62 on Tuesday, Jan. 22. On Friday, Jan. 25 they beat Potlatch 49-42 at Cottonwood. Finally on Saturday, Jan. 26 they beat Ambrose 55-41 at Riggins.
Vs. Lapwai
Against league leading Lapwai the Pirates played a solid first half but Lapwai pummeled them in the third quarter on their way to a 16-point win.Spencer Schumacher scores against Lapwai.
Spencer Schumacher scored the first 3 points of the game on a free throw and a basket but Lapwai then outscored them 4-12 to take a 7-12 lead.
Schumacher scored a pair of baskets to get back within 1 before Lapwai connected on a 3 and a lay-up for an 11-17 lead.
Prairie finished the quarter strong though as Schumacher hit a 3 and Cole Schlader scored a lay-up and a free throw to tie the score at 17-17.
Prairie had hit on 7 of 9 first quarter shot with Schumacher going 5 for 5 but still could manage just a tie.
Lapwai took the lead for good with 3 straight baskets to open the second quarter.
Prairie managed to get the lead down to 1 at 27-28 late in the half but Lapwai scored the final points of the half for a 27-30 lead at the break.
Schumacher had scored 17 of Prairie’s 27 points with no one else scoring more than 3.
Prairie got the lead down to 1 twice early in the third quarter on a reverse lay-up putback by Damian Forsmann to make it 29-30 and a 10 ft. jumper by Schumacher that made it 31-32.
From that point on Lapwai took over outscoring Prairie 2-14 the rest of the quarter. Prairie’s only points in that run were a lay-up by Devin Ross.
Lapwai led 33-46 heading in to the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats then scored the first 5 points in the fourth quarter to complete a 0-15 run before Dylan Schumacher scored his first points of the game on a putback.
Prairie outscored Lapwai 13-11 over the final 6:10 of the game.
Spencer Schumacher wound up with 23 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Schlader scored 7 while Forsmann scored 5, Ross 4, Dylan Schumacher, Derik Shears and Owen Anderson 2 each and Taylor Ott 1.
Prairie had a 30-26 edge on the boards led by Spencer Schumacher with 9.
Ross and Schlader each had a steal as Lapwai committed just 5 turnovers in the game. Dylan Schumacher had 6 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 41 from the field, 46%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. Lapwai was 27 for 56 from the field, 48%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.
Lapwai also won the JV game 50-51 as Prairie gave up a 4-point lead in the final minute of play.
Prairie played well in the opening quarter as Dean Johnson scored 6 and Brody Hasselstrom 5 as Prairie built an 18-10 lead. Lane Schumacher added a 3 while Hayden Uhlenkott and Kyle Schwartz each scored 2.
Lapwai scored a 3-point play to cut the lead to 18-13 by the end of the quarter.
Hasselstrom hit 4 of 4 at the line to open the second quarter giving Prairie a 22-13 lead. Unfortunately from then until the end of the half, Lapwai held Prairie to a 15 foot shot by Tyler Wemhoff as they outscored Prairie 2-10 to pull within 24-23 at the half.
Hasselstrom scored to open the third quarter but Lapwai answered with a 3 to tie it. Each team scored a pair of baskets to make it 30-30 with 3:58 left in the quarter. From then on Lapwai outscored Prairie 2-8 to take a 32-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie scored the first 6 of the fourth to tie it at 38 on a basket by Zach Rambo and 2 baskets by Hasselstrom. 
After a Lapwai basket, Prairie took the lead by on a putback by Rambo and a lay-up by Hasselstrom.
After Lapwai tied it at 42, Hasselstrom scored 2 free throws and Schwartz scored inside to make it 46-42 with 1:53 left.
Each team scored a pair of free throws to make it 48-44 with 1:16 left. A steal by Wemhoff led to Prairie’s free throws.
Lapwai then scored and after a defensive rebound, scored again to tie the game at 48.
A Prairie turnover led to a 3-point play that put Lapwai ahead 48-51. Prairie got back within 1 on a basket by Rambo with 14 seconds left. 
Prairie then got the ball back on a missed 1 and 1 by Lapwai with 9 seconds but Hasselstrom’s shot at the buzzer wouldn’t go in.
Hasselstrom wound up with 21 points to lead the scoring. Included was an 8 for 8 performance at the free throw line. Rambo scored 8 points with Johnson adding 6. Uhlenkott, Schwartz and Wemhoff scored 4 each while Schumacher scored 3.
Prairie had a big advantage on the boards, 52-29. Johnson led the team with 12 rebounds while Wemhoff had 9 and Schwartz and Uhlenkott had 8 each.
Hasselstrom, Johnson and Wemhoff had 2 steals each while Hasselstrom and Wemhoff each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 58 from the field, 31%, and 10 for 16 at the line, 63%. Lapwai was 19 for 55 from the field, 35%, and 9 for 13 at the line, 69%.

Vs. Potlatch
On Friday, January 25, Prairie gained a season sweep over Potlatch and if they can get past Genesee and C.V. in their final 2 league games they will have the #2 seed into District.
Prairie struggled in the fist quarter, hitting just 2 of 10 shots but the defense kept them close as Potlatch scored just 8 points in a 4-8 first quarter.

Ross and Dylan Schumacher got things going in the second quarter. Potlatch scored first to take a 4-10 lead by Ross connected on a 3-pointer. After a Potlatch basket, Ross scored inside and Dylan Schumacher scored after making a steal to cut the lead to 1.
A 3-pointer by Potlatch was answered by a 6-0 run by Prairie to give the Pirates their first lead. Spencer Schumacher and Dylan Schumacher each scored inside and Ross scored after a steal to make it 17-15.
Potlatch scored to tie it up but Ross gave Prairie a halftime lead with a buzzer-beating 2-pointer from the perimeter.
Potlatch scored the first 4 points of the third quarter to retake the lead. Ross tied it with a backdoor lay-up but Potlatch answered.
Spencer Schumacher scored twice on putbacks for a 25-23 lead but Potlatch answered with a pair of baskets to retake the lead.
Dylan Schumacher scored to tie it then assisted on a basket by Ross that put Prairie back on top. Spencer Schumacher scored at the buzzer for a 31-27 lead after 3 quarters.
Schlader sank a 3 from the corner to open the fourth quarter scoring and give Prairie a 34-27 lead.
Potlatch came back with three 3-pointers against a basket each by Sam Mager and Ross to cut the lead to 38-36 with 4:58 left.
Ross scored from the baseline but Potlatch answered to make it 40-38. 
Prairie then scored 5 straight points at the free throw line. Schlader made the first of 2 attempts then Spencer Schumacher made 4 straight for a 45-38 lead with 2:20 to play.
Potlatch twice got back within 5 but each time Prairie answered at the line to push the lead back to 7.
The last time Potlatch got within 5 was after 2 free throws with 36 seconds left.
Spencer Schumacher was fouled on a defensive rebound with 17 seconds left and hit both free throws for the game’s final points.
Ross had 19 points to lead Prairie in scoring while Spencer Schumacher had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dylan Schumacher scored 5 while Schlader scored 4 and Mager 3.
Prairie had a 27-23 edge on the boards.
Ross had 2 steals. Spencer Schumacher had 5 assists while Schlader had 4 as the team totaled 15 assists on 19 made baskets.
Prairie was 19 for 36 from the field, 53%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Potlatch was 17 for 45 from the field, 38%, and 4 for 5 at the line, 80%.
Prairie also won the JV game by a score of 43-27.
Hasselstrom got Prairie off to a good start with 6 of Prairie’s first 8 points in an 8-0 run. Schwartz scored the other 2. After a Potlatch basket with 2:01 left, Johnson scored inside and Uhlenkott hit a buzzer-beating 3 to make it 13-2 after 1 quarter.
Johnson opened the second quarter scoring to make it 15-2.
Potlatch then scored 6 straight to pull within 7 but Hasselstrom scored 2 baskets and a free throw over the next 2:40 to make it 20-8. 
This time Potlatch hit the buzzer-beating 3 to make it 20-11 at the half.
Potlatch scored the first 6 points of the third quarter to pull within 3 at 20-17. Hasselstrom broke the drought with a 3-pointer then Schwartz made a free throw and Wemhoff scored following a steal to push the lead back to 9 at 26-17.
Potlatch scored then Hasselstrom hit another 3 and Schwartz and Johnson added a basket each to give Prairie a 33-19 lead after 3 quarters.
Potlatch got no closer than 13 points in the final period as Prairie scored 6 of their 10 fourth quarter points at the free throw line.
Hasselstrom scored 17 to lead the Pirates. Johnson added 9 with Wemhoff scoring 6. Uhlenkott and Schwartz scored 3 each while Travis Alfrey and Alex McElroy scored 2 each and Rambo scored 1.
With a big height advantage, Potlatch had the rebounding edge 33-41. Johnson and Uhlenkott each had 7 to lead the Pirates.
Schwartz had 6 steals and 3 assists to lead in both categories.
Prairie was 16 for 52 from the field, 31%, and 8 for 17 at the line, 47%. Potlatch was 13 for 40 from the field, 33%, and 0 for 6 at the line.

Vs. Ambrose at Riggins
The Pirates got a little measure of revenge for their opening round loss at State last year by beating Ambrose at Riggins.
The first quarter was a feeling out quarter as the lead changed hands twice and the biggest lead was at 7-4 by Prairie after a 3-pointer by Forsmann.Sam Mager blocks an Ambrose player’s shot. Also shown is Dylan Schumacher.
Ambrose took a 9-10 lead on a 3-pointer but Prairie answered with a reverse lay-up by Dylan Schumacher that gave Prairie an 11-10 lead at the end of the first period.
Ambrose again took the lead to open the second quarter but Prairie answered with a basket each by Dylan Schumacher and Mager to take the lead for good.
Although Prairie never trailed again, they couldn’t really shake free of Ambrose in the first half. A 3-point play by Mager gave them a 4-point lead at 20-16 but Ambrose answered with a 3 from about 25 feet out. Schlader answered that with a 3 but Ambrose came back with 2 free throws to pull back within 2.
Prairie outscored the Archers 5-2 to end the half and take a 28-23 lead. Schlader had a free throw and Spencer Schumacher scored 2 baskets.
Dylan Schumacher opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer for a 7-point lead. Ambrose answered with a basket but a 7-0 run by the Pirates finally opened some breathing room. Spencer Schumacher had a 3-point play then Forsmann scored after a steal. Spencer scored again to make it 38-25.
Ambrose scored but Ross answered with a 3 and a reverse lay-up to give the Pirates a 16-point lead at 43-27. Ambrose scored the final 3 points of the quarter to make it 43-30.
In the fourth quarter Prairie was able to work their offense and get high percentage shots, hitting 6 of 7 attempts in the quarter, to hold off the Archers.
Ambrose never got closer than 11 points at 47-36. 
Spencer Schumacher wound up with 19 points to lead the scoring and made his last 7 shots from the field. Dylan Schumacher scored 9, Schlader 8, Ross and Forsmann 7 each and Mager 5.
Prairie dominated the boards 33-21 with Ross pulling down 12 rebounds.
Dylan Schumacher had 4 steals and 9 assists. Ross added 4 assits as Prairie had 19 assists as a team on 24 made baskets.
Prairie was 24 for 42 from the field, 57%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%. Ambrose was 17 for 46 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%.
Prairie is now 12-5 on the season and 8-2 in league play.
Prairie won the JV game 61-48.
Prairie took a 19-11 lead in the first quarter as Hasselstrom scored 6 and Uhlenkott and Rambo added 4 points each.
Ambrose came back to make it 19-15 by the end of the quarter and scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to tie the game at 19.
Schwartz scored a basket to put Prairie back on top and Schumacher added 2 free throws. Ambrose came back to tie it at 25. 
Schwartz put Prairie back on top with a free throw and Wemhoff rebounded the missed second shot and scored to make it 28-25. Ambrose was able to rally back and tie it at 30 at the half on a putback at the buzzer.
Ambrose scored to open the second half but Hasselstrom answered with a  3-pointer and Rambo followed with a free throw for a 34-32 lead.
Ambrose tied it again at 34 but a basket by Rambo kicked off a 9-0 run by Prairie that put the Pirates on top for good. Hasselstrom and Johnson added baskets to make it 40-34 after 3 quarters and Schumacher opened the fourth with a 3 to make it 43-34.
Prairie converted 9 of 10 at the line and hit 5 of 10 from the field in the final quarter to pull away for a 13-point win.
Hasselstrom again led the scoring with 19 points. Wemhoff was also in double figures with 10 points. Rambo scored 9 while Johnson and Schumacher added 8 points each. Schwartz scored 5 and Uhlenkott 4.
Prairie outrebounded Ambrose 30-22. Schwartz, Wemhoff and Schumacher each had 5 to lead the Pirates.
Wemhoff had 5 steals and Hasselstrom had 4 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 41 from the field, 51%, and 16 for 24 at the line, 67%. Ambrose was 21 for 47 from the field, 45%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%.
