Pirates win opener at C.V.
The Prairie baseball team opened their 2019 season with a 3-2 win over Clearwater Valley at Kooskia as pitchers Spencer Schumacher and Tate Berdoy combined to toss a no-hitter Tuesday, March 19.Michael Schwartz scored the go-ahead run all the way from first when Tate Berdoy’s single got past the centerfielder. Berdoy wound up at third.
Prairie managed to pound out 8 hits but C.V.’s pitching and defense managed to come up big when they needed to as Prairie left 11 runners stranded on the basepaths.
Prairie put 2 runners on in the first inning as Owen Anderson drew a walk and Sam Mager reached on an error, both with 1 out. A forceout at third and a pop-up to third ended the inning.
Spencer Schumacher started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up a walk but also struck out the other 3 batters he faced in the first inning.
Conner Schwartz led off the second inning with a looper to right and Dean Johnson followed with a pop fly to right that found an open spot for a single. After a flyout, Michael Schwartz beat out an infield hit to load the bases.
Berdoy followed with a fly ball to left that was dropped as Conner Schwartz scored but Johnson wound up getting forced out at third.
Schumacher gave up another walk in the second inning and a walk and an error in the third put 2 runners on but he got out of each inning without anyone scoring.
Chase Kaschmitter had a 2-out double in the third but was stranded and Carson Forsman had a 1 out single in the fourth but 2 ground balls to the infield got C.V. out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth C.V.’s leadoff hitter reached on a passed ball on strike 3.  A hit and run on a ground ball to second saw the runner go all the way to third. A passed ball to the next batter allowed C.V. to tie the game at 1-1.
Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the second and Mager drew a walk. C.V. changed pitchers and got an out. Kaschmitter was then hit by a pitch to load the bases but a strikeout and a groundout to second left the bases loaded as the inning ended.
Schumacher hit his pitch limit after 4 innings and Berdoy went to the mound in the fifth and struck out the side.
In the top of the sixth Michael Schwartz singled up the middle with 1 out. Berdoy also got a single up the middle that got past the centerfielder with Schwartz scoring the go-ahead run all the way from first. Berdoy wound up at third on the play.
Anderson then hit an RBI groundout to second as Berdoy scored from third for a 3-1 lead.
Mager followed with a ground rule double to the left field corner as the ball got under the fence. A walk to Schumacher put runners on first and second but a comebacker to the pitcher ended the inning.
The long inning may have affected Berdoy as he wasn’t as sharp coming back for his second inning of work. He hit a batter and that batter stole second. The next hitter grounded back to Berdoy who was able to tag out the runner off of second who tried to advance on the play. After a walk, Berdoy got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Prairie went down in order in the seventh and C.V. tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. Berdoy hit the first batter and a pinch runner went in and stole second. A wild pitch moved him to third and he scored when as catcher Dalton Ross tried to get him at third with the ball getting away for an error.
After a strikeout C.V. put the tying run on with a walk. Ross was then able to hold on to a foul tip for another strikeout and C.V. was down to their last out. Another hit batsman put the winning run on base but Berdoy then induced a ground ball to first with Kaschmitter making the unassisted out to end the game.
Schumacher pitched 4 innings allowing no hits with 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. Berdoy picked up the win while pitching 3 innings. He allowed no hits with 1 walk, 3 hit batsmen and 6 strikeouts.
Prairie had 8 hits with Michael Schwartz collecting 2 singles. Mager and Kaschmitter each had a double. Berdoy, Conner Schwartz, Johnson and Forsman each had a single. Berdoy and Anderson each had an RBI.
Prairie is 1-0 both in league and overall on the season.
The two teams then play 3½  innings of JV ball with C.V. winning 7-11.
Owen Anderson gets up to head for second after a bad pickoff throw gets past the first baseman.Prairie scored 3 runs in the top of the first on just 1 hit and all after the first two batters were put out. Matthew Seubert was hit by a pitch as was Johnson. Anderson reached on an error with Seubert scoring. Jeff Arnzen then reached on an error as 2 runs scored. Mager followed with a single to right before C.V. ended the inning with a fly ball out.
Kaschmitter started on the mound and got off to a rocky start with a hit batsman and a walk to start the game. A pickoff throw went in to center field but the runner was then nailed at third on a great throw.
C.V. got a run on a pair of wild pitches before Kaschmitter got out of the inning with 2 strikeouts.
Prairie added 2 runs in the second inning as Lane Remacle beat out an infield hit and Travis Alfrey worked a walk in a 7-pitch at bat. A groundout by Kaschmitter moved up the runs and Seubert walked to load the bases. Johnson then dropped a flare into right field for a 2 run single to make it 5-1.
Things fell apart for Kaschmitter in the bottom of the second as C.V. scored 9 runs on 4 walks, 1 hit batsman, 2 doubles and 2 singles. 6 of those runs scored after there were 2 outs. Alfrey went to the mound to finally end the inning.
Alex McElroy reached on an error in the third but was Prairie’s only baserunner.
Alfrey gave up a run on an error and a double in the bottom of the third then struck out 3 straight hitters to get out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth Kaschmitter led off with an infield single and Seubert followed with an infield hit. Kaschmitter wound up scoring on an error with Seubert winding up at third. Seubert scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Johnson to make it 7-11. The next two hitters were put out and the umpires called the game at that point.
