At Genesee
In the opener at Genesee, Prairie pitchers pitched into and out of trouble all game long as Genesee stranded 8 runners in the 5-inning game.Tate Berdoy is greeted at home plate after his home run at Genesee.
Prairie meanwhile stranded just 4 and took great advantage of walks, hit batsmen and errors to pile up 10 runs as the hit totals were even at 6 each.
Prairie was the home team in the opener and starting pitch Sam Mager had the bases loaded with just 1 out on a walk, single and hit batsman. He got out of the jam with a fielder’s choice to short with the out coming on a force at home and a fly ball to center for the third out.
In the bottom of the first Chase Kaschmitter singled to right, stole second and went to third when Mager struck out on a pitch in the dirt and had to be thrown out at first. Kaschmitter then scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
In the second Mager got a pair of strikeouts then gave up 2 singles. He got out of that inning when Genesee attempted a double steal. Catcher Dalton Ross threw as the runner took off from first but he threw to shortstop Tate Berdoy who had come in on the grass and Berdoy gunned out the runner at home who had apparently thought the throw was going all the way to second. This play doesn’t always catch the runner off third trying to steal home, but this time it did.
Prairie put up a 5-spot in the bottom of the second on just 1 hit. Owen Anderson led off with a walk in an 8-pitch at bat. Ross then also worked a walk and a 7-pitch at bat. Dean Johnson was hit by a pitch on what would have been ball 4 to load the bases. Anderson scored on a passed ball then Genesee got a pair of outs on a lineout to short as Ross got doubled off second. Travis Alfrey, Berdoy and Kaschmitter all walked with Johnson being forced home on Kaschmitter’s walk. Mager then singled to left and when the fielder let the ball get past him, all 3 baserunners scored to make it 6-0.
Genesee again loaded the bases with just 1 out in the top of the third on 2 singles and a hit batsman. Mager again got out of trouble with a strikeout and a groundout.
Prairie added another run in the bottom of the third. Anderson beat out an infield hit, stole second and went to third on a pitch to the backstop. After an out, Johnson reached on an error. Anderson had to hold at third but then scored on a straight steal of home as he slid under the tag of the catcher.
Berdoy went to the mound in the fourth and gave up a leadoff single and then hit the next batter. Neither player advanced though as a strikeout, popup to second and grounder to first got Prairie out of the inning unscathed.
Prairie added 3 more for a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Berdoy led off and hit a homer to left that likely was helped by the strong wind that was blowing out to left. Kaschmitter beat out and infield hit and Mager reached on an error at third. After as strikeout and an infield fly for an out, Ross walked to load the bases. Johnson then doubled to left to score Kaschmitter and Mager for a 10-0 lead.
Berdoy then got the side out in order in the fifth to give Prairie the win on the 10-run mercy rule.
Prairie had 6 hits led by Kaschmitter who had a pair of singles and an RBI. Berdoy had a homer and an RBI. Johnson had a double and 2 RBI. Mager had a single and 2 RBI. Anderson had a single.
Mager pitched 3 innings giving up no run on 5 hits with 1 walk, 2 hit batsmen and 4 strikeouts. Berdoy pitched 2 innings allowing no runs on 1 hit with 1 hit batsman and 2 strikeouts.
IFrist baseman Chase Kaschmitter goes after a ground ball at Genesee.n the second game Berdoy walked and Kaschmitter followed with an infield hit but an infield fly and 2 strikeouts kept the Pirates scoreless.
Berdoy started the second game and gave up a leadoff single but 3 straight fly ball outs got him out of the inning.
Both teams went out in order in the second inning.
In the third Berdoy hit a 1 out single to left and stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Kaschmitter’s single to left. Mager was hit by a pitch and Spencer Schumacher singled home Kaschmitter for a 2-0 lead.
Berdoy got 1 out in the second then hit a batter and gave up a single. Kaschmitter went to the mound and was not on his game as he gave up a walk, single and walk to allow both inherited runners to score. Anderson then went to the mound and promptly gave up a 2 run single and a walk to reload the bases before getting out of the inning on a foul popup to catcher Mager and a strikeout.
Prairie got a leadoff walk from Johnson in the fourth but Genesee pitcher Kolby Moser then struck out the next 3 batters.
Genesee added 4 more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Anderson gave up a leadoff single and then got a pair of outs before a single, 2 walks and another single led to 4 runs scoring as Genesee took a 2-8 lead.
Prairie responded with a run in the fifth. Mager worked a 1 out walk on an 8-pitch at bat. Schumacher followed with a walk. After a second out and then a pitching change as Moser had run out of pitches, Ross walked on 4 pitches and Johnson was hit by a pitch to force home Mager.
Schumacher went to the mound for the sixth and put the side out in order.
Prairie rallied within 3 with 2 run sin the sixth. Matthew Seubert drew a leadoff walk but was forced at second by Berdoy. Kaschmitter doubled to left as Berdoy had to hold up at third. Berdoy scored on a groundout by Mager and Kaschmitter scored on Schumacher’s single to right to make it 5-8.
Schumacher gave up a walk in the 7th but struck out the other 3 batters he faced.
In the top of the seventh Ross drew a leadoff walk and then went to second on a wild pitch. After an out Conner Schwartz reached on an error and stole second as Ross had advanced to third on the error. Berdoy walked to load the bases. With Berdoy as the go-ahead runner now on base, Kaschmitter then collected his fourth hit of the game, a single, but only Ross was able to score. Mager then hit a fly ball to the outfield but it was caught for the final out.
