Pirates take second at District
The Prairie baseball team earned a berth in the state tournament by beating Genesee 11-0 in a play-in game Tuesday, May 7 at Cottonwood. They will go into state as the #2 seed from District after beating Clearwater Valley 11-3 on Friday and then losing in the championship game 2-5 to Potlatch on Saturday. Both of those games were played at Orofino.
By taking 2nd they will open state play at 11:30 a.m. MDT Friday, May 17, at Glenns Ferry, against C.V. With a win they would then play District 3 champion Glenns Ferry at 5 p.m. MDT. With a loss they would play the Lapwai-Horseshoe Bend loser at 9 a.m. Saturday for 5th and 6th place.
Play-in Vs. Genesee
Prairie dominated Genesee in all phases of the play-in game played at Cottonwood.Chase Kaschmitter in his home run trot against Genesee in the game that clinched a state berth.
Sam Mager and Tate Berdoy combined to pitch a 2-hit shutout with only 1 walk and 9 strikeouts while the offense pounded out 9 hits and took advantage of 7 errors against Genesee’s best pitcher.
In the first inning Mager started on the mound and gave up a 2-out single to Genesee pitcher Kolby Moser. He then got a fly ball to Michael Schwartz in left field to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the inning Owen Anderson hit a 1-out single up the middle. He stole second and went to third when the throw went into the outfield. Chase Kaschmitter reached on an error when his grounder to second got through to right field with Anderson scoring. Mager singled to left and a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. After a second out, Dean Johnson nearly hit a 1-2 pitch out of the park but settled for a 2-run double to make it 3-0.
Mager gave up a leadoff walk in the second inning but a strikeout, groundout to second and a called third strike got him out of the inning with the runner stranded at third.
Carson Forsman led off the bottom of the second by hitting the first pitch he saw into right field for a single. Michael Schwartz followed by hit a grounder through the shortstop for an error. Tate Berdoy singled up the middle to score Forsman with Schwartz coming around to score on another error as Berdoy wound up at third. Anderson grounded out to second with Berdoy scoring. Kaschmitter followed with a solo homer to right center to make it 7-0. After a second out Dalton Ross worked a walk. He stole second. Then stole third. Johnson walked and stole second. With Connor Schwartz at the plate a passed ball allowed Ross to score and make it 8-0.
Berdoy took over on the mound in the third and set Genesee down in order.
In the bottom of the third, Forsman led off for the second straight inning and again singled, this time to left. The left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Forsman to go to second. Michael Schwartz again reached on an error as the second baseman made a bad throw to first. Berdoy gounded to third and the Genesee third baseman hesitated then tried to get the force at second with the second baseman dropping the throw leaving everybody safe as Forsman scored. Anderson then dropped a fly ball into no-man’s land between the infield and the left fielder to score Schwartz and went to second on the throw as Berdoy advanced to third. After a groundout to the pitcher where the runners had to hold, Mager reached on a fielder’s choice to score Berdoy. Prairie then tried a delayed double steal but Genesee was able to get Anderson at the plate.
Moser led off the fourth with a double, his second hit of the game. He advanced to third on a passed ball but was stranded there as Berdoy struck out the next 3 hitters.
The bottom of the fourth was the only time Prairie didn’t score with Connor Schwartz being the only baserunner after a 2-out single.
Berdoy faced the bottom of the Genesee order in the top of the fifth and set them down in order to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Prairie had 9 hits with Anderson collecting 2 singles and an RBI. Forsman also had a pair of singles. Kaschmitter had a home run and 1 RBI. Johnson had a double and 2 RBI. Berdoy had a single and 2 RBI. Mager and Connor Schwartz each had a single.
Mager pitched 2 innings allowing no runs on 1 hit and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Berdoy pitched 3 innings allowing no runs on 1 hit with no walks and 6 strikeouts.

Vs. CV at District
The district game against C.V. featured a lot of good pitching and some great defense, especially by the Rams, until the top of the 7th inning.

Mager was walks and Kaschmitter hit a looping single just behind second base that loaded the bases. Dalton Ross hit a grounder to the left of the third baseman who, seeing he didn’t have a play on Anderson at home, beat Mager to the bag at third for the second out as Anderson scored.
Mager started on the mound for Prairie and gave up a leadoff single but then got the next 3 hitters.
Prairie couldn’t cash in on a scoring opportunity in the second. Connor Schwartz led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. On a comebacker to the mound by Forsman, Schwartz was put out at third. Michael Schwartz was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Berdoy was intentionally walked to load the bases with 1 out. Anderson hit a fly ball to left that the left fielder made a great running catch on as the runners had to scramble back to their bases. A grounder to third then ended the inning.
Mager again gave up a leadoff single but then picked off the runner at first. He got the next 2 hitters to keep Prairie on top 1-0.
Prairie added a run in the third as Kaschmitter led off with a double. After an out, Kaschmitter scored on Johnson’s single up the middle to make it 2-0.
Berdoy took over on the mound in the bottom of the inning and got the side out in order.
C.V. got on the scoreboard in the fourth against Berdoy. A 1-out single was followed by a double that scored the runner. The batter was then caught in a rundown trying to go to third.
Kaschmitter led off the fifth with a single. Ross appeared to have a double but the leftfielder again made a great running catch. The inning ended with no runs scored.
In the bottom of the fifth C.V. took their first lead of the game. A leadoff walk was followed by a single to right. After a popup to second, a ground ball scored the first run as Prairie couldn’t get the tag in time at the plate. A groundout to short put C.V. ahead. Prairie then got out of the inning as Ross caught the runner off third for a caught stealing.
C.V. committed 2 errors in the sixth but it didn’t hurt them thanks to a double play. 
Berdoy worked around a 1-out error in the bottom of the sixth to keep it a 1-run game heading to the seventh.
Kaschmitter was put out on a deep fly to right and Ross popped out to the catcher. Prairie was down to their last out. Johnson singled to left. Connor Schwartz worked a walk. Coach Kyle Westhoff then sent up Travis Alfrey to pinch hit and he was walked on 4 pitches to load the bases.
At that point C.V.’s starter hit the pitch limit and C.V. brought in a different pitcher. Mike Schwartz greeted him with a single to right to score Johnson and tie the game. Berdoy then worked a walk to score Connor Schwartz and put Prairie ahead. Anderson followed with a 2-run single up the middle. Mager reached on an error to re-load the bases. C.V. again changed pitchers and the new pitcher hit Kaschmitter on a 2-0 count to force in another run. Ross reached on another error as Anderson scored. Johnson then doubled to the fence in left to clear the bases and give Prairie an 11-3 lead. After another error, C.V. finally got the third out on a strikeout after 11 straight hitters had reached base.
Berdoy quickly got 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh before a walk and a hit batsman put 2 runners on. He then struck out C.V.’s #3 hitter to end the game.
Prairie had 9 hits in the game led by Johnson who had a double and 2 singles and 4 RBI. Kaschmitter also had a double and 2 singles with 1 RBI. Anderson had a single and 2 RBI. Michael Schwartz had a single and an RBI. Connor Schwartz also had a single. Ross had no hits but 2 RBI and Berdoy also had an RBI.
Mager pitched 2 innings allowing no runs on 2 hits with no walks and 3 strikeouts. Berdoy pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks, 3 hit batsmen and 5 strikeouts.

District Championship vs. Potlatch
Prairie agains scored first in the District Championship game against Potlatch. Berdoy led off with a double to centerfield. He went to third on a balk and scored when Kaschmitter followed with a single.Spencer Schumacher returned to the mound against Potlatch at District after injuring his knee in the regular season home game against C.V.
Mager started on the mound for the third straight game and put the side out in order in the first inning.
Prairie got a leadoff single from Johnson in the second inning but he was forced at second and then a double play ended the inning.
Potlatch took the lead in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff single was followed by a strikeout. Another single followed that tied the game. A bunt single moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly put Potlatch ahead 1-2.
Prairie went down in order in the third and after a leadoff walk in the fourth were unable to move the runner.
Spencer Schumacher, in his first action since an injury against C.V. May 2, took over on the mound in the third. He gave up just a 2-out walk in the third but in the fourth his defense faltered. Potlatch got a leadoff infield single by the Potlatch pitcher. A courtesy runner came in and stole second. An error on the next play allowed the runner to score from second. After a strikeout Schumacher gave up a walk. An error on a pickoff play moved the runners to second and third and both scored on a single up the middle for a 1-5 Potlatch lead.
Prairie got one of those runs back in the fifth when Michael Schwartz drew a 2-out walk. Berdoy singled down the right field line and went to second on the play at third. The third baseman was called for interference as Schwartz ran into him trying to get to third and Schwartz was awarded home plate on the play to make it 2-5.
Schumacher got into and out of trouble in the bottom of the inning as a leadoff single was erased on a caught stealing. With 2 outs Potlatch got a single and a double but the lead runner was held up at third and Schumacher got a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Potlatch changed pitchers for the sixth and Prairie tried to get a 2 out rally going as Anderson was hit by a pitch and Johnson reached on an error but the next hitter grounded out to end the inning.
Potlatch struck out the side in the top of the seventh to win it.
Prairie had just 4 hits in the game, only 1 after the first 2 inning. Berdoy had a double and a single. Kaschmitter had an RBI single and Johnson had a single.
Mager gave up 2 runs in 2 innings on 3 hits with no walks and 1 strikeout.
Schumacher gave up 3 runs in 4 innings on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Prairie takes a 14-6 record into the state tournament.
