Pirates take fourth at State
The Prairie baseball team struggled with their hitting and wound up winning just 1 of 3 games at the State Tournament Friday and Saturday, May 17-18 at Glenns Ferry.
In the opener they took the lead, gave it back then rallied in the bottom of the 7th for a 5-4 win over Clearwater Valley, their third win over the Rams in 4 games this season. Later on Friday they lost 1-3 to Glenns Ferry. On Saturday in the 3rd place game they lost to Horseshoe Bend 5-12. That left them with a 4th place finish.
vs. C.V.
The state opener against C.V. was played in a steady drizzle just like the earlier game between Lapwai and Horseshoe Bend.
Sam Mager opened on the mound and gave up a leadoff single but then got out of the inning.
In the bottom of the first Tate Berdoy reached on an error but was forced out by Chase Kaschmitter. Kaschmitter wound up advancing to second on another C.V. error as they tried to complete a double play. Kaschmitter advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk by Mager, Spencer Schumacher hit a deep fly to right that scored Kaschmitter. Prairie had a run without benefit of a hit.
C.V. tied it in the second inning when Mager hit the leadoff batter, who stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Mager struck out the next two batter but a single scored the tying run.
Dalton Ross drew a 2-out walk in the bottom of the second and went to second and then third on errant pickoff attempts but was stranded at third as the inning ended.
Berdoy took over on the mound in the third and set C.V. down in order.
After 2 quick outs for Prairie, Mager reached when the left fielder dropped a fly ball. Schumacher was walked on 4 pitches but the inning ended with the next hitter.
C.V. took the lead in the fourth on a 1 out error, followed by a hit batsman with the run scoring on a groundout.
Priarie came right back with 2 runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Ross singled down the left field line with 2 outs, Prairie’s first hit of the game, and Michael Schwartz followed with a single to right. Ross advanced to third and Schwartz made it to second on the throw to third.
Ross scored on a wild pitch and Berdoy drew a walk. Kaschmitter looped a single to left to score Schwartz and give Prairie the lead.
Neither side scored in the next 2 innings.
In the top of the seventh Berdoy hit the leadoff batter but he was forced out at second. After a stolen base, a single scored the tying run with the batter advancing to second on the throw to the plate. A passed ball moved the runner to third and another single scored the go-ahead run for the Rams.
After a walk, coach Kyle Westhoff had Schumacher come in from right field to take over on the mound. Schumacher got the next two hitters out to keep it a 1-run game.
Schumacher then led off the bottom of the seventh and drew his third walk of the game. Owen Anderson hit what could’ve been a double play ball to short that went right through the wickets into left field. Dean Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Connor Schwartz drew a walk to force home Schumacher with the tying run.
Ross hit to short and Anderson was forced out at home. With Michael Schwartz at the plate, Westhoff had Johnson at third take off with the pitch, Schwartz made contact and Johnson was able to score the  winning run. 
Prairie had just 4 hits in the game, 2 singles by Michael Schwartz and a single each by Ross and Kaschmitter.
Mager gave up 1 run on 2 hits with no walks, 1 hit batsman and 4 strikeouts in 2 innings. Berdoy gave up 3 runs on 2 hits with 4 walks, 2 hit batsman and 2 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Schumacher picked up with win by getting outs from both batters he faced.

Vs. Glenns Ferry
In the semifinal game against Glenns Ferry, the Pirates struggled to get any kind of solid contact against the Pilots’ pitcher.Tate Berdoy was the starting pitcher against Glenns Ferry.
The rain had stopped but the wind picked up and it was a cold wind for this game.
The Pilots also didn’t make much contact against Prairie pitchers Berdoy and Schumacher.
Prairie’s first 6 hitters were all put out in order.
In the bottom of the second Glenns Ferry’s leadoff hitter reached on an error. He stole second and then stole third and scored on a groundout to first.
Connor Schwartz led off the top of the third for Prairie with the Pirates’ first hit of the game. Mike Schwartz was hit by a pitch to move Connor to second. The runners moved up on an error by the shortstop on Berdoy’s fielder’s choice. Connor then scored when Kaschmitter grounded to short for a forceout at third.
Berdoy ran out of pitches 2 outs into the third inning with Schumacher taking over.
Prairie was unable to score again in the game with their only real threat coming in the fifth when Berdoy and Kaschmitter both got 2 out hits but a strikeout ended the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Glenns Ferry got to Schumacher. A leadoff double was followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. The leadoff runner was forced at home but a 2-run single followed to give the Pilots a 1-3 lead. After a strikeout another single made it 1-4.
In the top of the seventh Ross had a 1-out single but never got past first base as the game ended.
Prairie had 5 hits in the game, all singles. Berdoy, Kaschmitter, Johnson, Connor Schwartz and Ross each had a hit.
Berdoy gave up 1 run in 2 2/3 innings on no hits with 1 hit batsman and 5 strikeouts. Schumacher gave up 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks, 1 hit batsman and 7 strikeouts.

Vs. Horseshoe Bend
Saturday morning the weather changed as it was sunny and warmer with the wind calmed down.
Dalton Ross pulls into second with a double against Horseshoe Bend. He was Prairie’s most consistent hitter at State with at least 1 hit in each game and 4 hits total including 2 doubles.Prairie got off to a good start as Mager set the side down in order to open the game.
In the bottom of the inning Berdoy led off with a single to right but was thrown out trying to steal second. Michael Schwartz hit second and was safe at first on a throwing error by the shortstop but then was put out trying to go to second. Schumacher walked and a popup ended the inning with Prairie having 3 batters reach base and nobody getting as far as second.
Things came unraveled for Mager in the top of the second inning as six straight batters reached base on 4 hits, a walk and an error. The first 5 hitters all scored for a 0-5 lead for the Mustangs.
Prairie then went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Mager got through the third with no runs, giving up only a 1-out double then getting a pair of strikeouts.
Prairie got on the board in the bottom of the third. Ross reached on a 1 out error and went to second on a passed ball. Berdoy walked and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Ross scored on a groundout to second by Michael Schwartz and Berdoy scored on a single down the left field line by Schumacher to make it 2-5.
The Mustangs got to Mager for 4 more runs in the fourth on 4 more hits plus an error. Connor Schwartz replaced Mager on the mound and got the final out of the inning but Prairie was now down 2-9.
Kaschmitter led of the bottom of the fourth with a double to left, Prairie’s first extra base hit of the tournament. Horseshoe Bend then turned a double play as Anderson grounded out to short and Kaschmitter was caught trying to advance to third on the throw to first.
Schwartz got through the fifth inning with no runs scoring.
Prairie got back into the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Carson Forsman pinchhit for Connor Schwartz and reached on an error. Ross doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Berdoy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Schwartz then hit a grounder to third with Forsman being forced at the plate. Schumacher then singled to right to clear the bases as Michael Schwartz scored all the way from first and beat the tag. That made it 5-9.
Unfortunately the Mustangs got those 3 runs back in the sixth as Connor Schwartz gave up 2 walks and a double. Anderson then came in to pitch and got the first batter he faced to swing at strike 3 in the dirt. When catcher Ross threw to first for the out the runner on third came in to score to make it 5-12.
Anderson then got a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Prairie got 2 quick outs then Connor Schwartz single to left and Ross doubled to left center but the rally died with a flyout to left.
Anderson got through the top of the seventh with no more runs scored.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schumacher drew a 1-out walk but he was Prairie’s only baserunner as the game ended with him still on first.
Prairie had 7 hits led by Ross who had 2 doubles. Schumacher had 2 singles and 4 RBI. Kaschmitter had a double and Berdoy and Connor Schwartz each had a single.
Mager gave up 9 runs on 8 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Connor Schwartz gave up 3 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks, 1 hit batsman and 2 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Anderson gave up no runs on 1 hit with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
Prairie ends their season with a 15-8 record.
