release steelhead
On May 15, the Agricultural Class from Nezperce and Highland, 4th grade students from Highland, and 7th and 8th grade students from Summit Academy completed their “Hatchery in the Classroom” program with the release over 420 (2 to 3 inch long) eyed steelhead into Lawyers Creek. Kim McCorkle, U S Fish and Wildlife Service, Dworshak Fisheries, arranged with Lewis Soil Conservation District (LSCD) to have approximately 125 steelhead eggs delivered to each classroom March 6, 2019. The classes, with the assistance of their teachers, monitored the water temperature and clarity. When the fish eggs hatched the students took charge of feeding them in addition to the monitoring duties. The LSCD received a grant in 2013 from the Nez Perce Tribe to purchase aquariums for the schools as part of their ongoing Information and Education programs. This hatchery project demonstrates the commitment the LSCD has towards improving fish habitat and water quality. The LSCD wishes to thank Kyle Stapleton, Josette Nebeker, Danette Horrocks, and Kevin Karel for their vigilance in rearing the fish in their classrooms, also thank you to Kim McCorkle for their support in making the project such a success. d multi-media developed an intriguing abstract painting.
