Cottonwood City Council meets
The Cottonwood City Council held their regular August meeting Monday, August 12.
The meeting lasted just 20 minutes with a light agenda.
In the water report Pat Holthaus reported the city pumped 5.7 million gallons and sold 4.9 million for a loss of about 14%. City maintenance supervisor Roy Uhlenkott said a substantial portion of the loss could be accounted for by flushing of the lines for the School Street project and water that was used during the mag chloride application on the streets. The School Street water line replacement has been completed.
Don Munkers, in his sewer report, said he is working on a comparison of what is actually going into the sewer system compared to what ought to be for the number of households on the system. It appears to be significantly higher than it should be.
In the street report Jack Duman said the mag chloride and chip sealing the city had planned for this summer is done. It looks like the state will be chip sealing the Hwy. 95 Business Loop next week.
He also reported they grouted the culvert on Goldstone St. and it is now in much better shape. When they looked into the culvert that nearly washed out in the flood this past spring they found out the creek bed had washed away deep enough to expose sewer lines. They were very fortunate those lines didn’t breach as that would’ve put more than enough water into the sewer system to overwhelm it. They are looking into options to remedy this.
There was also an incident with the Cottonwood Highway Dept. crack sealer. It was discovered that someone had run the wrong kind of mix through it and some gravel got into the lines causing damage. The city wound up getting stuck with the bill. Mayor Pepper Harman, who is in the insurance business, said he felt very strongly that if it was submitted as a claim to the city’s insurance that it would be rejected. The bill came to around $40,000.
In the fire department report Linda Nida reported the department responded to a vehicle crash for an extrication. The only fire call turned out to be a false alarm.
The council adjourned to an executive session to discuss personnel at 7:20 p.m. The budget hearing is next Monday, August 19 at 7 p.m. The next regular meeting is Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
