Pirates rout Geneseek
Genesee actually had a lead against Prairie but then gave up 88 unanswered points as the Pirates stayed unbeaten with an 88-6 rout of the Bulldogs at Genesee Friday, Sept. 27.Brody Hasselstrom breaks loose for one of his two long touchdown runs at Genesee.
Genesee received the opening kickoff and on their second play from scrimmage quarterback Dawson Durham connected with receiver Cy Wareham for a 72 yard touchdown. Prairie stopped the 2-point try making opposing teams 0 for 10 on the season on 2-point tries.
It didn’t take Prairie long to answer as the Pirates needed just 4 plays to move the ball 54 yards for a score. Cole Martin picked up 8 and Owen Anderson followed with a 15 yard run. Cole Schlader completed a 9 yard pass to Sam Mager and then Martin ran a sweep around left end for 22 yards and the tying touchdown. Anderson ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie an 8-6 lead.
On Genesee’s next possession they tried the Durham to Wareham connection 3 more times but it netted just 1 completion for 6 yards and Genesee had to punt.
Prairie took over at their own 31 and in 6 plays added another touchdown. The big plays were a 24 yard pass completion from Schlader to Derik Shears and a 29 yard run by Martin that set up first and goal at the 4. Anderson wound up scoring the touchdown on a 1 yard run. Schlader then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-6.
3 incomplete passes and Genesee had to punt gain. The punt went just 10 yards as Prairie took over at the Genesee 37. Martin went 18 yards around left end then burst through the middle for 19 yards to make it 22-6. The 2-point run came up short.
There was a stiff breeze blowing at Genesee and Dean Johnson’s kickoff wound up going into the end zone for a touchback.
3 passes netted a 1 yard loss forcing another punt into the wind. Shears took the punt at the Prairie 45 and returned it to the Genesee 11. A pass interference penalty against Genesee in the end zone moved the ball to the 6. Schlader ran the ball in from there on the next play to make it 28-6 as again the 2-point try came up short.
Genesee tried running the ball on their next possession and did no better, gaining just 5 yards on 3 plays before punting again. The punt went just 18 yards before going out of bounds at the Genesee 43.
Prairie needed just 1 play to score again as Mager caught a screen pass from Schlader and maneuvered his way 43 yards for the touchdown. Brody Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 36-6 with 4:33 still to go in the first quarter.
A Prairie penalty and a 20 yard pass completion helped Genesee moved the ball to the Prairie 28. Durham then tried passing out to the left side and the ball went off his receiver’s hands right to Martin, who caught the ball at the 25 and sprinted 75 yards for another Prairie touchdown. Schlader passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 44-6 with 2:52 left in the first quarter.
At that point it looked like they had a shot at Prairie’s 55 point first quarter explosion at Genesee back in 2009. In that Oct. 9 game Prairie scored 3 touchdowns in the final minute, 2 on defensive scores.
Genesee was able to run 3 plays and punted with Prairie taking over at their own 49. Hasselstrom gained 16 yards on a pitchout to the right as the first quarter ended.
Anderson added 12 yards and then Schlader connected with Shears on a crossing pattern for 25 yards and another touchdown to make it 50-6 just 19 seconds into the second quarter.
Genesee then used a Prairie pass interference penalty and two Wareham catches that combined for 36 yards to move to the Prairie 35. After 3 incomplete passes a fourth and 10 pass completion gained just 5 yards and Prairie took over on downs at the 30.
On the next play Hasselstrom ran a simple trap up the middle and burst through for 70 yards and another Prairie touchdown. T.J. Hibbard ran in the 2-pointer to make it 58-6.
Genesee’s next possession ended on a fumble as Johnson recovered at the Prairie 20 and returned the ball to the 17.
Hasselstrom ran for 9 yards to the 8 and Hibbard scored on the next play. Mager, who was in at quarterback for the last 2 series, ran in the 2-pointer to make it 66-6.
3 incomplete passes for Genesee and they had to punt again. This time they punted with the wind and got off a 50 yard punt that rolled dead at the Prairie 13.
A  couple of penalties worth 15 yards had the Pirates facing a third and 25 from their 13. Schlader completed a pass to Dalton Ross, who made a tough catch in coverage, for 22 yards to the 35. On fourth and 3 Hasselstrom broke loose for his second long touchdown of the game as he went 65 yards this time. Schlader passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 74-6 with still 3:55 left in the half.
Genesee lost yardage on 2 plays and had to punt on fourth and 17 from their own 18. Shears made a fair catch at the Genesee 48.
Prairie wasn’t trying to score as coach Ryan Hasselstrom called for a quarterback sneak. However, you can’t tell your players not to compete and Schlader wound up gaining 37 yards on the play.
John Gehring, 6, and Dean Johnson combine to tackle Genesee’s quarterback. After a delay of game penalty, another quarterback sneak gained Schlader 8 yards to the 8. Hibbard then ran up the middle for a touchdown to make it 80-6 with 58 seconds left in the half. Coach Hasselstrom had Schlader take a knee on the 2-point try.
80 points is a new record for most points in a half by the Pirates. The most we could find in a half before was 72 points against Wallace in a state playoff game in 2015, a game that wound up 72-6.
Prairie put the JV offense on the field to start the second half and wound up turning the ball over on downs at the 50.
Genesee put together their best sustained drive of the game against the second unit defense. They moved the ball down to the Prairie 15 where they faced a fourth and 5. Dalton Ross tackled the pass receiver after just a 3 yard gain giving Prairie the ball at the 12 early in the fourth quarter.
Prairie fumbled the ball back to Genesee 2 plays later at the 17.
A personal foul penalty against the Pirates gave Genesee a first and goal at the 8. A fumbled pitchout cost the Bulldogs 11 yards back to the 19. A 3 yard loss put them back to the 22 where they faced a fourth and goal. Ross batted away the pass attempt as Prairie took over at the 22.
Jesse Cronan picked up 14 yards to moved the ball to the 36. A 3 yard loss followed. On the next play Cronan burst through the line on a trap block and went 67 yards for the final touchdown of the game. Cronan becomes the fourth different Prairie runner this season to score on a 60 yard or longer run joining Martin, Anderson and Hasselstrom.
Genesee was able to run just 1 play following the kickoff before the clock ran out.
With their 88-6 win, Prairie tied their highest ever point total and margin of victory, equaling the 88-6 win they had over Troy last season.
Prairie piled up 472 yards rushing on 32 attempts. Hasselstrom led with 166 yards on 6 carries. Martin added 111 yards on 7 carries and Cronan had 81 yards on 2 carries. Schlader picked up 48 yards on 4 carries. Anderson had 38  yards on 6 carries and Hibbard had 31 on 6 carries.
Schlader completed 5 of 7 passes for 123 yards. Colton McElroy was 1 for 2 for -3 yards.
Mager had 2 catches for 52 yards. Shears had 2 catches for 49 yards. Ross had 1 catch for 22 yards and Cronan had 1 catch for -3 yards.
Genesee had just 23 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Durham was 10 for 27 for 135 yards passing. They had 158 total yards, 72 of those on 1 play.
Anderson led the defense with 7.5 tackles. Ross had 7 tackles. Hasselstrom and Hibbard each had 4 tackles. Johnson had 3 tackles and a sack. Mager and Cronan each had 2 tackles. John Gehring had 1.5 tackles. Martin had 1 tackle plus and interception. Schlader, Shears, Hayden Uhlenkott, Matt Coppernoll and Lane Schumacher each had 1 tackle. Reid Uptmor and Quirt Goeckner each had .5 tackles.
With the win Prairie is now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play.
