Pirates shut out Loggers
The Prairie Pirates stayed unbeaten with a 42-0 win over Potlatch at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 4.
The defense forced 6 turnovers from the Loggers in recording their first shutout of the season. They haOwen Anderson heads for the end zone on Prairie’s first play from scrimmage against Potlatch.d 3 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries. You can also add in an onside kick recovery.
For the first time this season, Prairie received the opening kickoff with Owen Anderson returning the short kick 10 yards to the Prairie 43. 
On Prairie’s first play from scrimmage the Potlatch defense all flowed to the right side to stop Cole Martin while Anderson took the ball around the left side for 57 yards and a touchdown. Martin ran in the 2 pointer to make it 8-0 just 15 seconds into the game.
Potlatch took the kickoff and moved the ball, picking up 3 first downs before stalling at the Prairie 28 with a dropped fourth down pass.
Quarterback Cole Schlader was sacked on third down and Prairie was forced to punt. This was the first punt of the season by the first team offense.
Potlatch took over at their own 45 and on their second play from scrimmage committed their first turnover. Anderson made a leaping interception of the ball at the Potlatch 45 and took it to the end zone for his second touchdown. The 2-point try came up short as Prairie led 14-0.
Potlatch got a 32 yard gain from quarterback Justin Nicholson with Anderson making the tackle at the Prairie. 
2 plays later Prairie defender Jesse Cronan got a hand on a Nicholson pass that enabled Schlader to make an interception at the Prairie 28. Schlader returned it 37 yards to the Potlatch 35.
4 plays later Martin went 21 yards around the left side for Prairie’s third touchdown of the game. Anderson added the 2-pointer to make it 22-0 as the first quarter ended.
Prairie then tried an onside kick with Derik Shears recovering at the Potlatch 49. 
Prairie moved the ball down to the 35 where they committed their own turnover as Potlatch recovered a fumble at their 42.
The Loggers picked up a first down then were hit with a holding penalty that led to a punt. Prairie took over at their 27 yard line.
A false start set the Pirates back but Schlader then hit Sam Mager for 7 yards on a rollout and Anderson ran right for 16 yards and a first down.
Schlader connected with John Gehring for 18 yards to the Potlatch 37. 3 runs by Brody Hasselstrom netted 14 yards to the Potlatch 23. On the next play Schlader faked a run to the left to Hasselstrom and ran a bootleg around the right side for a 23-yard  touchdown play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie took a 28-0 lead with 6:53 left in the half.
Potlatch picked up 25 yards on a double reverse run by Tyler Wilcoxsen to move to the Prairie 40 but 4 plays later Nicholson fumbled with Dean Johnson recovering at the Prairie 43.
A scramble by Schlader who eventually found Mager downfield for a 14 yard gain moved the ball to the Potlatch 41.
A fumble which led to a 7 yard loss had the Pirates facing fourth and 10 from the 41. Schlader appeared to have a touchdown pass on a screen on the next play but the Pirates were called for an ineligible player downfield leading to a fourth and 15. Prairie tried a hook and ladder with Schlader passing to Shears who lateraled to Martin but the Loggers were able to hold that play to 10 yards as they took over on downs.
On the next play Nicholson ran a read option, where he sticks the ball in a running back’s gut then decides whether to make the handoff or keep it, that wound up being another turnover as Johnson took the ball right out of the quarterback’s hands to give Prairie the ball at the 33.
Hasselstrom picked up 19 yards on a pitch to the left. Schlader connected with Dalton Ross for a 9 yard gain to the 11. Martin ran left for 10 yards as he was tackled just short of the goal line. Schlader then connected with a wide open Anderson over the middle for the touchdown. Shears ran in the 2-pointer to make it 36-0 with a minute left in the half.

At left is Dean Johnson.The last play of the half wound up being the Loggers fifth turnover as Martin caught a tipped pass at the Prairie 42 and looked like he might take it to the end zone but was pushed out of bounds by Nicholson at the Potlatch 27 as the half ended.
Potlatch received the second half kickoff and picked up a first down but then were forced to punt from their own 44. 
Prairie took over at their own 21 and overcame 20 yards in penalties to moved the ball 79 yards in 12 plays for another touchdown. A big play was an 18 yard pass to Martin on third and 18.  Anderson followed with an 18 yard run to the Potlatch 35.
After an illegal motion penalty the Pirates faced fourth and 4 at the 16. Schlader connected with Shears for an 11 yard gain to set up first and goal at the 5. Schlader then ran in the ball on the next play to make it 42-0 as the 2-point play came up short. That invoked a running clock for the final 14:37 of the game.
Potlatch came back with a grinding 14 play drive that was helped by a personal foul penalty on the Pirates as they moved the ball to the Prairie 10. On fourth and 7 at that point Reid Uptmor and Schlader combined to sack Nicholson for a 4 yard loss as the Pirates took over at the 14.
Prairie was forced to punt and Potlatch took over at their own 45. 
They had the ball just 1 play as another fumble was recovered by T.J. Hibbard at the 43.
Prairie was then able to run out the clock.
Prairie picked up 241 yards rushing on 31 attempts with Anderson gaining 106 yards on just 6 carries. Hasselstrom had 43 yards on 6 carries, Martin had 41 on 10 carries and Schlader had 28 on 5 carries.
Schlader completed 14 of 16 passes for 131 yards. Shears caught 5 for 43 yards. Mager caught 4 for 42 yards. Martin had 1 catch for 21 total yards including 3 on a lateral. Gehring had 1 catch for 18 yards, Ross had 1 catch for 9 yards and Anderson had 2 catches for -2 yards.
Potlatch had 132 yards rushing on 40 attempts led by Justin Nicholson who had 37 yards on 14 attempts. Jerrod Nicholson added 36 yards on 8 carries and Kenon Brown had 33 on 10 carries. Justin Nicholson was 4 for 11 passing with 3 interceptions for 52 yards. Connor Akins caught 3 for 37 and Brown 1 for 15.
Martin led the defense with 8.5 tackles plus an interception. Anderson had 8 tackles with a sack and an interception. Shears had 6 tackles and ½ a sack. Ross and Mager each had 4.5 tackles. Hibbard had 3 tackles and a fumble recovery. Cronan had 3 tackles. Hayden Uhlenkott had 2 tackles and a sack. Johnson had 2 tackles, ½ a sack and 2 fumble recoveries. Schlader had 1.5 tackles, ½ a sack and an interception. Carson Forsman had 1.5 tackles and ½ a sack. Reid Uptmor had 1.5 tackles. Gehring had 1 tackle.
Prairie is now 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Their next game is against Lapwai this Friday, Oct. 11 at Cottonwood at 7 p.m.
