Pirates spoil Kamiah's homecoming
The Prairie football team spoiled Kamiah’s Homecoming/Senior Night with a 71-16 win last Friday, Oct. 18 at the Kubs field in Kamiah.
The Pirates scored 11 touchdowns in the game with 4 of those coming from the defense and special teams, including their first 2 scores.Owen Anderson and Dalton Ross (behind Anderson) provide blocking for Derik Shears on a punt return for a touchdown.
Kamiah received the opening kickoff and were forced to punt. It was a wet, slick field for the game due to rain earlier in the day and that may have had something to do with the Pirates’ fumble on their first play from scrimmage with Kamiah taking over at their own 49.
3 plays later Cole Martin intercepted a Kamiah pass at the Prairie 45 and took it 55 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Owen Anderson’s extra point kick missed to the left as Prairie took a 6-0 lead.
Kamiah was forced to punt again and this time Derik Shears took the ball at the Prairie 40 and headed right, handing off to Anderson who came back to the left and took the ball 60 yards for another touchdown. Again, Anderson’s kick missed.
At this point Prairie had run one offensive play on which they had turned the ball over, but still led 12-0.
Kamiah’s fourth possession of the game ended with another turnover as Reid Uptmor recovered a fumble at the Kamiah 37.
Prairie ran only their second offensive play of the game and Martin made it pay off with a 37 yard run on a pitch to the left for another touchdown. This time Anderson made the kick as Prairie took a 19-0 lead.
The next Kamiah possession ended in another punt which Shears returned 42 yards to the Kamiah 24.
Prairie wound up facing a fourth and 13 from the 27 after Schlader slipped on the wet turf for a 6 yard loss son third down. Schlader was able to keep his feet on fourth down and passed to Shears for a 27 yard scoring play. Anderson’s kick was blocked as Prairie led 25-0 with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
Kamiah got on the scoreboard on their next series with quarterback Trent Taylor broke through the middle of the line and went 65 yards for a touchdown. Taylor then passed to Gabe Eades for the 2-pointer to make it 25-8.
Martin took the kickoff and returned it 36 yards to the Kamiah 25. Schlader passed to Anderson on a short swing pass to the left that Anderson took 22 yards to the 3 for a first and goal. Anderson then scored on a run up the middle on the next play. He added the extra point kick to make it 32-8 with 1:02 left yet in the first quarter.
Kamiah wound up punting from their own 11 on the next possession and Shears took the punt at the Kamiah 45 and returned it to the end zone for Prairie’s second punt return touchdown of the game. Anderson made the kick to make it 39-8 with 10 seconds left in the quarter.
Kamiah’s next possession ended with their third turnover of the game. This time the defense stopped running back Titus Oatman in the backfield and Anderson stripped the ball right out of Oatman’s arms and took it 45 yards for Prairie’s second defensive touchdown of the game. A 2-point run failed leaving Prairie with a 45-8 lead.
A horsecollar tackle penalty on the kickoff return enabled the Kubs to run their first offensive plays in Prairie territory. They face a fourth down and 4 at the Prairie 39 but quarterback Tayler slipped to the ground while looking to pass and Prairie took over at the Kamiah 47 after a 14 yard loss.
The Pirates needed just 1 play to add another touchdown as Martin caught a pass over the middle from Schlader for the 47 yard scoring play. Schlader passed to Sam Mager for the 2-point play to make it 53-8.
Kamiah was forced to punt again with Shears returning the punt 13 yards to the Kamiah 39.
Brody Hasselstrom picked up 6 yards on first down and on second down Schlader rolled out to the right and found Shears open downfield for a 33 yard scoring play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie made it 59-8 with 6:11 left in the first half.
Kamiah was forced to punt again after 3 plays and Prairie took over at their own 32. After a first down loss, Martin picked up 18 yards on a run to the left.
On the next play, Anderson took a handoff on a draw play and went through the middle for 53 yards and another touchdown. The 2-point run came up short as Prairie led 65-8.
Cole Martin avoids a Kamiah player after making an interception which he took to the end zone for Prairie’s first touchdown of the game at Kamiah.Kamiah had to punt again after Uptmor sacked Turner for a 7 yard loss on third down. The punt went out of bounds at the Prairie 48.
3 plays later Prairie committed their second turnover of the game as Schlader’s pass was intercepted and returned 14 yards to midfield. The half ran out after a 3 yard gain by the Kubs.
The second half was played with a running clock.
Prairie took the second half kickoff with Martin returning the kick 28 yards to the Kamiah 42.
Two runs by Martin netted 19 yards. A pair of pass completions netted just 5 yards setting up third and 5 at the 18. Martin took a pitch around right end and went 18 yards for Prairie’s final touchdown of the game. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie took a 71-8 lead.
Prairie put the subs in on offense and defense for the rest of the game and the two teams netted just 1 first down between them until Kamiah’s final possession.
A fourth down incompletion by Prairie gave Kamiah the ball on the Prairie 36. They moved the ball down to the 25 where backup quarterback Colton Sams ran to the right and broke a few tackles on his way to a touchdown. He also ran in the 2 pointer to make it 71-16.
After the kickoff Prairie took a knee to run out the clock.
Offensively Prairie had their lowest output of the season, 299 total yards. That was more due to taking the ball over in Kamiah territory most of the time and having short distances to go to score than it was a lack of offense.
Prairie had 160 yards rushing on 23 attempts led by Martin who had 93 yards on just 6 carries. Anderson added 55 yards on 4 carries and T.J. Hibbard had 31 yards on 4 carries.
Schlader completed 6 of 8 passes with 1 interception for 130 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mager completed 1 of 3 passes for 7 yards.
Shears had 3 receptions for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns. Anderson had 2 catches for 18 yards. Martin had 1 catch for 47 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Cronan had 1 catch for 7 yards.
Kamiah had just 126 yards of offense. They had 117 yards rushing on 41 attempts. Turner led with 41 yards on 7 carries. Turner was 4 for 13 passing for just 9 yards with 1 interception.
Defensively Martin had 9 tackles plus an interception. Shears had 9 tackles. Uptmor had 5.5 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Anderson had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Hibbard had 4 tackles. Dean Johnson had 3.5 tackles. Cronan had 2 tackles and 2 sacks. Matt Coppernoll had 2 tackles and 1 sack. Mager had 2 tackles. Hasselstrom and Dalton Ross each had 1.5 tackles and Schlader had 1 tackle.
The Pirates are now 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in league play. They clinched at least a tie for the White Pine League championship and have clinched a state tournament berth.
They close out the regular season with Senior Night against Clearwater Valley this Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood.

A wide open Derik Shears is about to catch a pass for a touchdown at Kamiah.

Owen Anderson outruns a defender down the sideline on a punt return for a touchdown. Derik Shears had received the punt and handed off to Anderson on a reverse.

Owen Anderson tried several more point after kicks against Kamiah. He made this one but missed several likely due to the slick field.
