Pirates win league championship
The Prairie football team recorded their fifth undefeated regular season and seventh league championship in the last 12 years as they defeated Clearwater Valley 70-12 on Senior Night at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 25.Derik Shears makes a great catch on a ball in the back of the end zone for a 2-point conversion.
The game was played in gale-force winds with gusts likely up to 35 mph or better. Rain fortunately held off until after the game was over.
Seniors Carson Forsman, Sam Mager, Hayden Uhlenkott, Derik Shears, Damian Forsmann, Owen Anderson and Reid Uptmor were honored before the game along with senior Jacey Rambo who kept stats for the past 3 years.
The Pirates dominated the game, building a 70-0 lead before taking the foot off the gas. C.V. got a pair of late touchdowns and 124 of their 215 total yards against the JV defense in the fourth quarter.
Cole Martin nearly scored on the opening kickoff as he returned the kick 79 yards before getting pushed out of bounds at the C.V. 7 yard line. Owen Anderson took the ball into the end zone on the next play. Prairie then added the 2-point try on a pass from Cole Schlader to Derik Shears despite having to go an extra 5 yards due to a false start penalty. 22 seconds into the game Prairie had an 8-0 lead.
C.V. picked up a first down on their first possession of the game but on their first pass attempt, 6 plays into the possession, Martin made a leaping interception at the C.V. 40 and took the ball to the end zone for a touchdown. Anderson added the 2 pointer to make it 16-0.
C.V. was forced to punt on their next possession and Shears returned the punt 19 yards to the C.V. 34 after taking a handoff from Anderson.
On 2nd and 6, a 6 yard run by Anderson was pretty much nullified by a holding penalty, setting Prairie back to the 34 for a second and 10. Schlader ran an option keeper to the right side and went untouched to the end zone thanks to great blocking by the Pirates. Schlader then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0.
C.V. was forced to punt again and Prairie let the punt go and it got a great roll for the Rams down to the Prairie 12.
The Pirates needed just 5 plays to travel 88 yards for another score. Anderson picked up 14 on the first play. After an incomplete pass, Martin picked up 23 over the right side. Anderson went over the right side for 25 and Martin finished things off with a 26 yard run around left end. The 2-point conversion was a senior night special as Schlader passed to senior lineman Hayden Uhlenkott for the conversion.
C.V. put together 3 first downs on their next possession as they moved the ball down to the Prairie 10 before coming up short on a fourth down run.
The Pirates took over at the 11 and needed just 4 plays to go 89 yards. All 3 of Schlader’s pass completions came on this drive. He passed for 10 yards to Shears, 8 yards to Anderson and 46 to Mager to moved the ball to the C.V. 25. Martin then run up the middle and broke free from an attempted tackle at the 15 on his was to a 25 yard scoring play. The 2-point pass fell incomplete leaving the Pirates with a 38-0 lead early in the second quarter.
C.V. was forced to punt again with Shears returning the ball 17 yards to the C.V. 43.
T.J. Hibbard burst through the middle for 42 yards, getting stopped just shy of the goal line inside the 1. Hibbard scored on the next play and then added the 2-point run to make it 46-0.
C.V. was pinned down at their own 10 following Shane Hanson’s kickoff. After a 3 yard run, Shears intercepted a C.V. pass attempt at the 15 and ran it in for Prairie’s second defensive touchdown of the game. Martin ran in the 2-pointer to make it 54-0.
It was 3 plays and punt for the Rams on their next possession with Prairie taking over at their own 35.
Martin gain 32 yards on the first play. On the next play Shears ran a play as tailback and went 42 yards for the touchdown. Shears then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 62-0 with 4 minutes left in the half.

After a 4 yard run by Schlader, Martin picked up 17 yards to the C.V. 16. Prairie then just took a knee to run out the half.
The entire second half was played with a modified running clock where it didn’t even stop for scoring plays.
C.V. received the second half kickoff and it was 3 plays and punt again. Prairie took over at their own 29 and after an incomplete pass, ran 7 straight running plays to cover 71 yards. Martin had a 25 yard run to move the ball to the C.V. 35 then the starting offense gave way to the subs.
Jesse Cronan picked up 12 yards to move the ball to the 20 then Hibbard gained 9 followed by an 11 yard scoring play. Cronan ran in the 2 pointer to make it 70-0 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.
C.V. finally got on the scoreboard on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 63 yard run by backup quarterback Aiden Martinez. The 2-point try was stopped making it 70-6.
Prairie was able to run out most of the clock with a 10-play possession that ended at the C.V. 39 after a sack on fourth and 13 at the 27.
C.V. took over and Martinez was stopped for a loss of 1. On the next play Christian Fabbi went 62 yards for another touchdown. The 2-point try failed and that turned out to be the final play of the game.
Prairie gained 398 yards rushing on 33 attempts led by Martin who had 149 yards on 8 carries. Hibbard added 98 yards on 8 carries with Anderson gaining 57 on 5 carries. Shears gained 42 on 1 carry and Schlader had 37 yards on 3 carries.
Schlader was 3 for 5 passing for 64 yards. Mager caught 1 for 46 yards, Shears 1 for 10 yards and Anderson 1 for 8 yards.
C.V. gained 212 yards rushing on 32 attempts with 124 of those coming in the fourth quarter. 
C.V. passers completed more passes to Prairie defenders (2) than to their own receivers (1). They were a combined 1 for 6 for 3 yards with 2 interceptions.
Defensively Anderson led the way with 9.5 tackles. Shears had 6 tackles plus 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown. Mager had 3.5 tackles. Martin had 3 tackles plus and interception which he returned for a touchdown. Uhlenkott had 3 tackles. John Gehring had 2.5 tackles. Hibbard and Dalton Ross each had 2 tackles. Hanson, Uptmor, Schlader and Cronan each had 1 tackles and Forsman had ½ a tackle.
Prairie is now 8-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play.
Their first state playoff game will be either Nov. 8 or Nov. 9 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. Their opponent will be the loser of this Friday’s game between Oakley and Raft River.
