win State opener
The Prairie football team rolled up 484 yards rushing and survived some uncharacteristic mistakes on offense to beat Raft River 60-26 at Moscow in their state playoff opener Friday, Nov. 8. 
The game started out like it was going to be a real high scoring game as 32 seconds in the score was 8-8. Prairie took the opening kickoff, which went out of bounds putting the Pirates on their 35.Cole Martin took the handoff on the first play and took off around the left side for 65 yards and a touchdown. Cole Schlader ran in the 2-pointer for an 8-0 lead. The Pirates kicked off and Raft River wound up starting at their own 20. Trojan quarterback Bodee Spencer took the ball on a slow developing play around the right side and wound up going the distance for a Trojan touchdown. Ethan Bernad ran in the 2-pointer to tie the score at 8-8. On Prairie’s next possession the Pirates moved into Raft River territory on a 19 yard pass from Schlader to Sam Mager. Two plays later though a high snap to Schlader wound up as a 21 yard loss setting Prairie back to their own 40. That led to a punt with Raft River taking over at their own 27. Spencer tried running the ball again but Derik Shears tackled him for a 1 yard loss. 2 more runs netted 0 yards and Raft River punted to the Pirates. Prairie took over at their own 29. Prairie ran a draw with Owen Anderson picking up 21 yards to the 50. On the next play Anderson took the ball over the right side for 50 yards and the go-ahead took down. Brody Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 16-8. After picking up a first down, Raft River was forced to punt again with Shears returning the punt 13 yards to the Prairie 45. A 30 yard pass completion from Schlader to Mager moved the ball to the Raft River 30. Martin went 18 yards around the right side to move the ball to the 12. After a loss of 1, Martin took a pitch around the left side for 13 yards and another Prairie touchdown. Schlader passed to Shears for the 2-pointer to make it 24-8. Prairie then tried an onside kick and got the ball to bounce around but Raft River came out of the pile with the ball at their 49. The Trojans were able to move the ball down to the 15 then almost scored on a pass play from Spencer to Justin Schumann gained 12 yards to the 3 where Anderson made a touchdown saving tackle. On first and goal from the 3, Spencer tried to pass again but Shears got a hand on the ball and deflected the pass with Reid Uptmor coming down with the ball for an interception. He carried the ball out to the 14 where Prairie took over. Martin had a big gain wiped out by a holding penalty and the Pirates wound up facing third and 9 from the 15. Schlader tossed a screen pass to Anderson who managed to elude just about everyone on the Raft River defense at least once and some twice as he went 73 yards for a touchdown. Martin ran in the 2-pointer to extend the lead to 32-8 with 9:42 left in the first half.  Raft
River looked to answer and overcame 15 yards in penalties to get a first
down at the Prairie 25. A false start penalty made it first and 15. Shears
and Dalton Ross then tackled Spencer for a 2 yard loss and Shears and Anderson
tackled him on the next play for a 4 yard loss setting up third and 21.
A pass to Schumann picked up 8 yards to set up fourth and 13. Spencer then completed a pass to Carson Durfee but Martin tackled him 4 yards short of a first down and Prairie took over at the 19. Martin took a pitch around right end for 9 yards then Hasselstrom went 42 yards over the right side to the Raft River 30. Martin ran a counter to the left side for 28 yards before getting pushed out of bounds at the 2. Schlader scored on the next play. An illegal formation on the 2-point try negated a conversion and the pass fell incomplete on a second try from the 8 yard line as Prairie led 38-8. On Raft River’s next possession the Pirates tackled them in the backfield 3 straight times for 9 yards worth of losses forcing another punt. Prairie took over at their own 42. A holding penalty cost them a big gain from Schlader to Shears that would’ve had the ball at the Raft River 13. Instead they were pushed back to their 23. Two plays later Prairie tried a hook and ladder play with Mager catching the pass but trailer Anderson was well covered by Raft River and the ball was knocked loose with Durfee scooping up the ball at the 40 and taking it to the 21. An illegal block on the return moved them back to the 31. After 2 incomplete passes, Dean Johnson sack Spencer for a 7 yard loss. Spencer then passed to Schumann for an apparent touchdown but an offensive pass interference penalty negated the score. On fourth and 32 from the 47, Anderson blew through the line and sacked Spencer for an 11 yard loss. Prairie took over at the Raft River 36. A pass over the middle for Martin was just long. On the next play Schlader rolled out to the left and tried to pass to Anderson. He should put more air under the pass as Sam Rigby intercepted and ran the ball back. It appeared Martin had caught him short of the goal line but the officials got together and ruled that it was a touchdown as the half ended. Martin tackled the runner short of the goal line on the 2-point try as Prairie took a 38-14 lead into the half. Raft River received the second half touchdown and Spencer went 27 yards on their opening play. An incompletion, a sack for a 5 yard loss by Johnson and another incompletion forced a punt with Prairie taking over at their own 27. Prairie was also forced to punt with Raft River taking over at the Prairie 44 as the punt bounced backwards in favor of Raft River for about 20 yards. The Trojans put together and 8 play scoring drive with Bernad scoring from the 2 that cut the lead to 38-20. A personal foul penalty by the Pirates on the touchdown allowed Raft River to kick off from the Prairie 45. They tried an onside kick but John Gehring was able to cover the ball at the Prairie 31. Prairie then took to pounding the ball down field as the ran the ball 10 straight plays to go the 69 yards for a touchdown to retake the momentum. Anderson covered the final 15 yards for the score and Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 46-20 with 3:12 left in the third quarter. Raft River was forced to punt after 3 plays despite an offsides penalty against Prairie. Spencer punted to Shears at the 30 and Shears took the ball to the end zone for a touchdown. Unfortunately it was called back on a questionable illegal block penalty. Prairie took over at their own 24 and again kept the ball on the ground with another 10 play scoring drive that was all running plays. Martin had runs of 15 and 34 yards in the drive and scored the touchdown on a 15 yard run in which he broke a couple of tackles on the way his way to diving over the goal line for the score. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie took a 52-20 lead with 9:29 to play. Rafter River looked to answer but a blindside block penalty cost them a big gain and set them back to their own 16. The punt went off the side of Spencer’s foot and went out of bounds just 11 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Prairie took over on the Trojans’ 26. After a false start penalty and an incomplete pass, Anderson picked up 17 yards to the Raft River 14. Schlader then made his only pass completion of the second half as he connected over the middle to Mager who took the ball into the end zone. Schlader completed a pass to Shears for the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 60-20 lead and insure the final 6:54 of the game would be under a running clock. Raft River answered back with 3 straight pass plays that took them 62 yards for a touchdown with 3:55 left that cut the margin to 60-26. Mager recovered the onside kick and Prairie was able to run out the rest of the clock. The Pirates piled up 484 yards rushing on 48 attempts led by Martin who had 276 yards on 24 carries and 3 touchdown. Anderson added 118 yards rushing on 8 carries and Hasselstrom had 88 yards on 8 carries. Schlader wasn’t as sharp passing the ball as usual as he completed just 5 of 12 attempts with an interception for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. It may have had something to do with the broken left thumb he apparently suffered in the first half. Mager caught 5 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown and Anderson caught 1 pass for 73 yards and a touchdown. Prairie had 628 total yards of offense. Raft River had 265 yards of offense. They had 107 yards rushing on 33 attempts. Led by Spencer who had 83 yards on 22 attempts. After gaining 80 yards on his first attempt, Spencer was stopped for losses on 15 of his next 21 carries as he added just 3 more yards. Spencer completed 13 of 20 passes with 1 interception for 158 yards. Schumann caught 8 passes for 124 yards. Durfee caught 2 for 21. Seth Tracy caught 2 for 8 yards and Bernad caught 1 for 5 yards. Anderson led in tackles with 12.5 plus 1.5 sacks. Shears had 7 tackles plus a sack. Johnson had 5 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Martin also had 5 tackles. Uptmor had 4.5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception. Hasselstrom and Mager each had 4.5 tackles. Ross had 3.5 tackles. Shane Hanson had 1.5 tackles. Schlader and Gehring each had 1 tackles and Carson Forsman, T.J. Hibbard, Jesse Cronan and Matt Coppernoll each had .5 tackles. Prairie is now 9-0 on the season. They will face Oakley in the state semifinals this Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
