Pirates advance to championship game
The Prairie football team improved to 10-0 on the season with a 50-22 state semifinal win over Oakley Friday, Nov. 15 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.Derik Shears races to the end zone to complete a 62 yard touchdown pass that put Prairie ahead to stay.
That puts the Pirates into the state championship game which will be held this Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m., also at the Kibbie Dome. Their opponent is the 11-0 Lost Rivers Pirates, a consortium between Butte County and Mackay.
Prairie received the opening kickoff against Oakley and moved the ball down the field with a 33 yard run by Owen Anderson sett them up at the 15. Cole Martin picked up 4 yards and Anderson added 3 to set up third and 3. Cole Schlader gained 2 on a sneak but Martin was stopped on fourth and 1 at the 6.
Oakley took over and picked up a first down on a pass play but then were forced to punt as they couldn’t gain anything running the ball.
Derik Shears had trouble fielding the punt but kept possession for the Pirates at the Prairie 25.
Martin went over the right side for 45 yards to set Prairie up on the Oakley 30. 8 yards from Brody Hasselstrom and 5 from Anderson moved the ball to the 22. Runs of 7 and 5 by Hasselstrom set up first and goal at the 5. Anderson went up the middle on the next play for the first points of the game. Martin ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Oakley bounced back with a 20 yard kickoff return setting them up at the Prairie 45. A 27 yard pass from Chandler Jones to Caleb Arnell moved the ball to the Prairie 18.
A facemask penalty against the Pirates on third down helped give Oakley a first and goal at the 6. 3 plays later Jones connected with Arnell for 4 yards and a touchdown. Jones then ran in the 2-pointer to tie the game at 8-8.
Shears had a kickoff return of 36 yards to move the Pirates out to the 41 yard line.
A running play was stuffed in the backfield for a 3 yard loss. On the next play Schlader threw the ball deep down the middle to Shears who caught the ball at about the Oakley 35 with his defender falling down as Shears made the catch. Shears completed a 62 yard scoring play to put Prairie back on top. Martin again added the 2-pointer to make it 16-8.
Oakley was forced to punt on their next possession after a holding penalty set them back with the Pirates taking over at their own 23.
After a 3 yard run by Martin on the final play of the first quarter, Prairie was hit with a false start penalty. A bad snap led to Schlader scrambling to get the ball and he made something out of nothing by flipped the ball forward to Anderson who wound up with a 4 yard gain on a play that looked like it would be a 10 yard, or worse, loss.
Schlader then completed a pass to Shears who made a 1-handed grab for a 12 yard gain and a first down at the 37.
Prairie then stuck to the ground with Martin going right for 27. Anderson then went left for 14. Martin finished off the drive with a 22 yard run around right end to make it 22-8. The two point pass to a wide open Shears was thrown just a little bit too far and went incomplete.
Prairie then kicked off with Jase Berlinguet catching the ball at the Oakley 21. He returned the ball to the 40 where all of a sudden, Martin came out with the ball heading the other direction. Martin had taken the ball right out of Berlinguet’s hands and went 40 yards for another Prairie touchdown. The 2-point run came up short but Prairie now led 28-8. With 10:27 left in the half, Prairie had scored more points against Oakley than any of their other opponents this season. No one else had scored more than 22 against them.
Oakley took the ball at their own 32 following the kickoff. On their first play Jones completed a 48 yard pass to senior running back Josh Nyman that set Oakley up at the Prairie 20.
Owen Anderson powered his way through this attempted tackle to score the game’s first touchdown. The defense stiffened as 3 plays netted -2 yards. On fourth and 12 from the 22 Jones attempted a pass with Sam Mager making the interception at the Prairie 14 and returning it 19 yards to the 33.
3 runs netted 14 yards and a first down. Hasselstrom picked up 8 to move the ball into Oakley territory at the 45. Martin was stopped for no gain on 2nd and 2. On third down Martin again went into the middle and got through the line and broke into the clear as Oakley had their defense all stacked up to stop the short yardage play. Martin had clear sailing to the end zone on a 45 yard run. Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 36-8 with 6:40 left in the half.
Oakley got down to the Prairie 29 before their drive stalled and Prairie took over on downs at the 32.
Prairie faced a fourth and 2 at their own 40 and a bobbled snap led to Anderson recovering the ball a yard short of a first down with Oakley taking over.
Oakley faced a fourth and 13 but Jones completed a pass for 20 yards to Berlinguet. On the next play Jones pass to Isaac Mitton for 21 yards to set up first and goal at the 3. Levi Jackson burst through the line for the touchdown on the next play. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as the score was now 36-14 with 1:37 left in the half.
Oakley twice tried an onside kick but were called for being offsides both times. They kicked it deep on the third try from the 30 with Martin unable to handle to the ball as it went out of bounds at the 25. Prairie ran the ball into the line 3 times for 6 total yards as the half ran out.
Oakley received the second half kickoff and were forced to punt with the ball going out of bounds as the Prairie 25.
Anderson picked up 16 yards each on back to back runs to move the ball into Oakley territory at the 43. A 9 yard run by Martin and a 9 yard pass completion from Schlader to Mager set up a first down at the Oakley 25. A 14 yard run by Martin moved the ball to the 11.
Oakley’s defense then stiffened as 3 running plays netted just 4 yards. Schlader’s 4th down pass to Shears went incomplete with Oakley taking over on downs.
Oakley moved the ball 93 yard in 13 plays with 4 pass completions picking up the bulk of the yards. Berlinguet got Oakley out of their own end with a 36 yard catch on third and 8 at the 9. He then capped off the drive with a 28 yard catch on fourth and 11 from the Prairie 28. Jones passed to Austin Cranney for the 2-pointer to make it 36-22.
Prairie took over on their own 23 following the kickoff. The Pirates need 9 plays to travel 77 yards. Hasselstrom ran for 14 to move the ball to the 47. Schlader passed to Shears for 13 down the left side. 2 runs by Martin netted 13 yards and another first down at the 27.
On second and 8 from the 25, Schlader found Shears open down the left side for 25 yards and another touchdown. Schlader passed to Anderson for the 2-pointer to make it 44-22 on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Oakley tried to answer back and moved into Prairie territory with a 20 yard pass from Jones to Berlinguet.
Mitton then gained 4 yards before the Hornets starting moving backwards. Dean Johnson and Dalton Ross stopped Jackson for a 1 yard loss. Shears tackled Jones for a 1 yard loss. On fourth and 8, Johnson sacked Jones for a 6 yard loss as Prairie took over at the Oakley 48.
Prairie turned the ball over on down at the Oakley 30 as Schlader’s fourth and 10 pass to Shears came up 4 yards short.
Oakley gave the ball right back though as Mager made his second interception of the game at the Oakley 46. Johnson hit Jones from behind just as he was throwing leading to the turnover.
On second and 8 Schlader looked to pass but wound up getting flushed from the pocket and ended up gaining 39 yards to set up first and goal at the 5. 3 plays later Hasselstrom went in from the 2 to make it 50-22 with 2:59 to play. The 2-point pass was intercepted.
Oakley picked up 1 first down with help from a Prairie offsides penalty before turning the ball over on downs at the Prairie 43. Prairie then ran out the clock.
The Pirates picked up 436 yards rushing on 57 attempts led by Martin who had 206 yards on 25 carries, his second straight 200+ yard game. Anderson added 110 yards on 13 carries. Hasselstrom had 65 yards on 12 carries and Schlader had 50 yards on 6 carries.
