Pirates lose twice
The Prairie Pirates opened their season with a pair of losses as they fell to the Grangeville Bulldogs 51-61 at the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 6 at Cottonwood and then lost 57-80 at St. Maries Saturday, Dec. 7.
Vs. Grangeville
The Pirates still seemed to be in football mode as they committed 30 fouls in the game which resulted in 42 free throws by Grangeville.Sam Mager battles Grangeville’s Kyle Frei for rebounding position at the Idaho County Shootout. On the plus side for Prairie, Grangeville made just 19 of those 42 free throws but they accounted for the difference in the score as Prairie was just 8 for 20 at the line, an 11 point difference in a 10-point game.
Prairie got off to a good start as Owen Anderson scored Prairie’s first points of the game. Daman Forsmann followed with a 3 pointer and Brody Hasselstrom stole the ball and scored for a 7-0 lead.
Grangeville didn’t score until the 4:30 mark of the first quarter but their first points came at the free throw line. A basket cut the lead to 7-4 but Forsmann connected on another 3 to make it 10-4 with 2:10 left in the quarter. Grangeville then scored 9 straight points to end the quarter with a 10-13 lead. 4 of those 9 points were free throws.
In the second quarter Prairie got within 1 point 3 times at 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17. They finally were able to tie the score at 22 when Anderson made a free throw. Grangeville quickly answered but Prairie retied the score at 24 when Hasselstrom drove the baseline for a lay-up.
Grangeville then took back the lead with a Tori Ebert 3-pointer and Kyle Frei added a basket and then a free throw as Grangeville took a 30-24 halftime lead.
A 3 to open the second half by Tescher Harris gave Grangeville a 9 point lead but Prairie fought back within 2 when Forsmann and Anderson connected on back to back 3’s that cut the lead to 34-36 with 3:48 left in the third quarter. Grangeville answered with a 3 of their own and added a basket to take a 34-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
A 3-point play by Hasselstrom and a 3 pointer by Forsmann cut the lead back to 3 at 40-43 with 6:30 left but Grangeville then scored 7 straight to push the lead back to 10. Prairie got no closer than 7 the rest of the way.
For the game Forsmann scored a game-high 23 points as he connected on six 3-pointers. Also in double figures were Hasselstrom with 13 and Anderson with 10. Hayden Uhlenkott and Zach Rambo each scored 2 while Derik Shears scored 1.
Grangeville had the rebounding edge 38-43. Shears led the Pirates with 11 boards. 
Forsmann had 3 steals and Hasselstrom had 3 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 57 from the field, 33%, and 8 for 20 at the line, 40%. Grangeville was 19 for 42 from the field, 45%, and 19 for 42 from the line, also 45%.
Of note defensively, Shears took 3 charges in the game.
The JV game was played at Grangeville on Wednesday, Dec. 4 with Grangeville winning 38-44. The C team also played Grangeville that night and won their game 33-29.

At St. Maries
The Pirates hung with a tall, athletic Lumberjacks team for the first 13 minutes then got blitzed at the end of the second quarter and wound up losing by 23.
Anderson again was the first to score as he hit a 3-pointer this time. St. Maries answered but Shears scored his first basket of the season to make it 5-2.

St. Maries came back with 7 straight points to take the lead and after Sam Mager made 2 free throws it was 12-13 at the end of the first quarter.
St. Maries three times went up by 5 early in the second quarter only to have Prairie shave the lead back. 2 free throws by Hasselstrom cut the lead to 3 at 14-17. After a St. Maries basket, Forsmann hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 17-19. 
St. Maries answered with a 3 but Mager scored a free throw and Shears a lay-up to again cut the lead to 2 at 20-22. 
St. Maries scored to lead by 4 but Hasselstrom hit 2 free throws to again cut the lead to 2 at 22-24 with 3:21 left in the half. 
Not long after that Hasselstrom went out of the game with an ankle injury and St. Maries closed out the half with a 0-11 run to take a 22-35 halftime lead.
St. Maries gradually increased their lead as the second half wore on. As they led by 22 by the end of the third quarter and by as many as 29 in the fourth. 
Prairie managed to avoid the running clock when Kyle Schwartz connected on 3 free throws and Uhlenkott scored inside to cut the lead back down to 24. 20 was as close as they could get though and that came at 57-77 with just 1:10 left.
A St. Maries 3-pointer closed out the scoring.
Anderson scored 18 points to lead the Pirates. That included three 3-pointers. Shears scored 13 as he also hit double figures. Schwartz scored 7 with Forsmann scoring 5. Mager, Uhlenkott and Hasselstrom each scored 4 and Rambo scored 2.
St. Maries had 5 players score in double figures.
St. Maries won the rebounding battle 23-32. Mager had 7 to lead the Pirates.
Mager had 3 steals and 2 assists while Forsmann had 2 steals and 2 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 50 from the field, 36%, and 17 for 25 at the line, 68%. St. Maries was 34 for 54 from the field, 63%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%.
Prairie is now 0-2 on the season.
The JV team trailed by just 1 point at halftime but wound up losing by 9, 53-62.
St. Maries got off to a good start when they had 2 players fouled on 3 point attempts and converted all 6 free throws in the first 3 minutes of the game.
They led 6-10 at the point then Prairie put together a 13-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. Lane Schumacher scored a basket and Wyatt Ross followed with a 3 for an 11-10 lead. Kyle Schwartz added a basket to make it 13-10. After a St. Maries basket, Schwartz made 2 free throws and Tyler Wemhoff and Schwartz each added a basket. 
St. Maries then regrouped and closed out the first quarter with a 0-8 run of their own to take a 19-20 lead.
Colton McElroy tied it with a free throw and Wemhoff put Prairie ahead with a basket early in the second quarter. 
3 times in the quarter Prairie led by 4 but St. Maries put another quarter closing run together to take a 32-33 lead at the half.
Prairie shot just 3 for 17 in the third quarter with Schumacher making the 3 baskets, 2 of them 3-pointers. Levi Walsh added 2 free throws but Prairie trailed 42-46 after 3 quarters.
Wemhoff and Schumacher were the only scorers in the fourth quarter for Prairie as Schumacher scored 6 and Wemhoff 5, but St. Maries scored 16 to pull away for the 9 points win.
Schumacher wound up with five 3-poitners and 22 points to lead all scorers. Wemhoff added 13 points. Schwartz scored 6 as he played just the first half. Ross added 5 with Shane Hanson, Walsh and Travis Alfrey scoring 2 each and McElroy 1.
Prairie was outrebounded 44-54. Hanson led the Pirates with 10 rebounds while Schwartz and Schumacher had 7 each.
Schumacher had 6 steals and Schwartz had 6 assists.
The JV’s connected on 19 of 68 shots, 28%, and 8 of 17 free throws, 47%. St. Maries was 23 for 64 from the field, 36%, and 12 for 20 at the line, 60%.
