Pirates are 1-1 on the week
The Prairie boys basketball team split a pair of league games to close out the 2019 portion of their schedule. On Tuesday, Dec. 17 they lost to Kamiah 53-59 at Cottonwood. On Friday, Dec. 20, they traveled to Genesee where they won 76-45.
Vs. Kamiah
The loss to Kamiah was Prairie’s first against the Kubs since a district elimination game in 2013.Owen Anderson drives into the lane against Kamiah.
Kamiah did a good job of keeping the Pirates out of the key and Prairie couldn’t get their outside shots to fall.
Kamiah meanwhile got a 3-pointer to open the game. Prairie answered with a basket each by Damian Forsmann and Owen Anderson for a 4-3 lead but that didn’t last long.
Cole Schlader saw his first action of the season after suffering a broken thumb in the state semifinal football game against Oakley. He sank his first shot, a 3-pointer, then struggled to find the range the rest of the game.
Prairie trailed 12-17 at the end of the first quarter. 
A basket inside by Derik Shears and a 3-pointer by Forsmann tied the score at 17. Prairie again tied the score at 19 on a pair of free throws by Shears. They then took back the lead on a 3-pointer by Kyle Schwartz, his only shot attempt of the game. Kamiah answered with a 2-10 run and never trailed again.
Forsmann hit his second, and last, 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to pull the Pirates withing 2 at 27-29.
Prairie was able to tie the score several times in the second half, the last time at 45 in the fourth quarter, but could never take back the lead.
In the third quarter Prairie hit just 3 of 16 shot attempts but managed to outscore the Kubs 11-10 thanks to hitting 5 of 8 free throws.
When the Pirates tied the score at 45 with 5:20 left the Kubs answered with a 2-8 run with half of those 8 points coming at the line. 
The fourth quarter saw Prairie out score Kamiah 13-8 from the field but the Kubs hit 10 of 17 free throws while Prairie was just 2 for 7 at the line.
The Pirates had 3 players in double figures led by Forsmann with 13 points. Schlader scored 11 in his season debut with 7 coming in the fourth quarter. Shears added 10 points. Sam Mager scored 8 with Anderson and Hayden Uhlenkott adding 4 each and Schwartz 3.
Prairie had a 40-39 rebounding edge led by Mager who had 11. Forsmann had 9 and Shears 8.
Anderson had 3 steals and 3 assists while Mager and Shears each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 58 from the field, 33%, and 10 for 20 at the line, 50%. The Pirates were 5 for 23 from 3-point range, 22%. Kamiah was 18 for 47 from the field, 38%, and 18 for 29 at the line, 62%.
The Pirates won the JV game 56-41.
Prairie jumped out to an 11-2 lead and led 14-6 by the end of the first quarter. Lane Schumacher sank a 3-pointer to open the second quarter then Kamiah reeled off 10 straight points to take their first, and only, lead of the game at 17-18.
A 3 by Kyle Schwartz put the Pirates back on top and they led 30-23 at the half. 
Wyatt Ross scored 8 and Zach Rambo 7 in the third quarter as Prairie outscored the Kubs 21-10 to take a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter, 53-33.
Tyler Wemhoff scored Prairie’s only 3 points of the fourth quarter as Kamiah closed the game with a 0-6 run but still lost by 15.
Ross had 13 points to lead the scoring with Schumacher adding 10. Rambo scored 9, Shane Hanson 8, John Gehring 6 and Schwartz and Wemhoff 5 each.
Kamiah had a 42-45 edge on the boards. Gehring had 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Ross had 4 steals and 3 assists while Schwartz led the team with 4 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 72 from the field, 33%, and 6 for 18 at the line, 33%. Kamiah was 16 for 43 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 21 at the line, 43%.

At Genesee
The Pirates bounced back from their first league loss to post a big win at Genesee.
Derik Shears and Kyle Schwartz double-team a Genesee player. Also shown at right is Zach Rambo.The game was tied early on a 2-2 then the Pirates scored the next 20 straight points for a 22-2 lead early in the second quarter. Shears scored 7, Anderson 6 and Uhlenkott 4 in the first quarter.
Schlader had the other point in his first starting role of the season. He was taking Forsmann’s place as Forsmann was out of the game due to having the screws taken out of his ankle that he broke during the summer that caused him to miss most of the football season.
Prairie led 18-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates upped the lead to 20 when Rambo scored and then Uhlenkott stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored to make it 22-2.
Not long after that Genesee’s Carson Schwartz got blistering hot shooting the ball as he went for a stretch of hitting 5 of 6 shots with 4 of those being 3-pointers, plus 2 for 2 at the line as he helped Genesee cut the gap to 33-25 by halftime.
The third quarter was Schlader’s turn to heat up from the field. He hit 7 of 10 shots and 2 of 2 at the line in the quarter for 17 of his team-high 29 points. Mager added 5 points and Shears 3 as Prairie took a 58-36 lead into the fourth quarter. 
Meanwhile the halftime break didn’t do any favors to Genesee’s Schwartz as he was 0 for 5 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter Prairie built their lead to 25 at 65-40 on a 3 by Rambo. Genesee got back within 22 but an 8-0 run with Schlader scoring a 3-point play and then a 3 point shot and Mager scoring after a steal invoked the running clock with 2:15 left to play.
Mager added Prairie’s final 2 points at the line. 
Schlader scored a game-high 29 points with Shears adding 13 and Mager 11. Uhlenkott and Rambo each added 7 points while Anderson scored 6. Wyatt Ross added 2 points and John Gehring scored 1.
Rebounding was even up at 37 each. Mager had 10 to lead the Pirates while Schlader had 9 and Shears 8.
Mager had 3 steals and 3 assists while Uhlenkott also had 3 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 48 from the field, 54%, and 22 for 34 at the line, 65%. Genesee was 14 for 58 from the field, 24%, and 12 for 22 at the line, 55%.
Prairie goes into the Christmas break with a 4-3 overall record, 3-1 in league play. Their next game is Saturday, Jan. 4 at Cottonwood against St. Maries. Start time for the JV game has been moved up to 1 p.m.
The JV team won their game 62-50.
Genesee scored first on a 3-pointer but Prairie answered back with a 10-0 run. Hanson and Ross scored 4 each in that run with Schwartz adding the other 2. Prairie went on to take a 17-9 lead into the second quarter.
Travis Alfrey scored 6 points in a 10-2 run that opened the second quarter giving Prairie a 27-11 lead. Wemhoff also scored 6 points in the quarter as Prairie led 37-22 at the half.
The Pirates scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to push their lead to 47-22. Schumacher scored 6 of those 10 and added a 3-pointer for 9 points in the quarter as Prairie took a 56-29 lead into the fourth period.
Prairie’s biggest lead was 29 after Hanson opened the fourth with a basket for a 58-29 lead. Genesee wound up scoring the final 14 points of the game to get the final margin down to 12. Their final 9 points came on three 3-pointers.
Hanson wound up as the Pirates leading scorer with 12 points while Schumacher scored 11. Rambo, Alfrey and Wemhoff scored 8 points each. Gehring scored 6, Ross scored 5 and Schwartz and Colton McElroy scored 2 each.
Genesee had the rebounding edge 24-34. Gehring led the Pirates with 5 rebounds.
Schumacher had 6 steals and 4 assists while Gehring also had 4 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 51 from the field, 51%. That was helped immensely by a 10 for 13 second quarter. The Pirates were 8 for 13 at the line, 62%. Genesee was 21 for 49 from the field, 43%, and 1 for 2 at the line, 50%.
