Pirates win at Grangeville
Four players scored in double figures as the Prairie boys basketball team avenged a season-opening loss by winning 69-50 at Grangeville Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Prairie was to play two other games this past week but the home game against Salmon River on Friday and the away game at Troy on Saturday were both cancelled due to weather conditions. We would imagine they will try to reschedule the Troy game at least as that is a league game.Owen Anderson passes the ball to Derik Shears at Grangeville.
Grangeville scored the first 4 points of the game then Prairie answered with a 9-0 run. Derik Shears drove the baseline for a lay-up then Cole Schlader scored Prairie’s next 7 points. He had a baseline jumper, a 3-point play and 2 free throws as Prairie took a 9-4 lead.
Grangeville came back to tie it at 9 and had a chance to retake the lead before Schlader stole the ball and drove in for a basket. Shears scored a putback just before the buzzer to make it 13-9 at the quarter break.
Grangeville scored first with a free throw in the second quarter but Prairie answered with a 3 by Zach Rambo. A Grangeville basket was answered by a basket by Shears that was set up with a steal by Damian Forsmann. After another Grangeville basket, Prairie scored 6 straight on a lay-up by Owen Anderson and a pair of hoops by Schlader for a 24-14 lead.

Anderson opened the second half scoring with a 3. After a Grangeville basket, Forsmann and Anderson each hit a 2-point basket for a 40-25 lead.
Grangeville cut the lead to 8 with a 0-7 run but a basket by Anderson and free throw by Brody Hasselstrom put the lead back to 11. Hasselstrom’s free throw came when he went in to shoot for Schlader who had been fouled going to the hoop after making a steal. Schlader crashed into the padding and suffered some kind of knee injury that put him out the rest of the game.
A 3 by Grangeville was answered by a lay-up by Shears and then Forsmann scored after making a steal.
After 2 Grangeville baskets cut the lead to 8, Hasselstrom then sank a 3 on a feed from Kyle Schwartz. That made it 50-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a 0-5 run that cut the lead to 6 but Prairie came right back with a 15-0 run that pretty much put the game away. Forsmann opened the run with a pair of 3-pointers. Mager followed with a pair of baskets. Mager then made an offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Hasselstrom for a 3-pointer. Shears scored inside to make it 65-44 with 2:52 left to play.
Grangeville finally broke their nearly 4-minute scoring drought with a free throw. Rambo answered with a short jumper.
Grangeville scored the next 5 points to cut the lead to 67-50 with 1:00 left but Prairie scored the final 2 points when Anderson made 2 free throws for the 19 point final margin.

Twice more in the second quarter Prairie pulled within 1 at 15-16 after a putback by John Gehring and at 17-18 after a putback by Shane Hanson with 58 second left. Grangeville led 17-20 at the half.

Grangeville took back the lead on a 3-point play but a driving lay-up by Schwartz tied it and a putback by Gehring put Prairie back on top 31-29.
Grangeville scored 2 baskets for a 31-33 lead but Schumacher sank a 3 to put Prairie back on top with 3:02 left. A Grangeville basket with 1:05 left put Grangeville back into the lead by Schumacher hit another 3 with 28 seconds left on a feed from Ross to make it 37-35.
With 4 seconds left Grangeville got fouled and went to the line, making the first but missing the second and Prairie was able to run out the clock for the win.
