Pirates lose 2 of 3
The Prairie boys basketball team dropped a pair of league games then bounced back with a non-league win. They lost 56-86 at Lapwai Thursday, Jan. 16 and then lost to Potlatch 43-63 at Cottonwood on Friday, Jan. 17. They won 76-60 at Orofino on Saturday, Jan. 18.
At Lapwai
In the game at Lapwai the Pirates led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but the second quarter saw the Wildcats blitz the Pirates 9-29 to take a 20-39 lead at the half.
Prairie didn’t fall any further behind in the third quarter but couldn’t make up any ground either as they trailed 38-58 after 3 quarters.
Lapwai then outscored the Pirates by 10 in the fourth for the 30-point win.
Damian Forsmann scored 29 points with five 3-pointers to lead all scorers while Derik Shears added 12 points. Brody Hasselstrom scored 5 with Sam Mager and Owen Anderson adding 4 points each and Kyle Schwartz adding 2.
Cole Schlader was held out of play to let the bruised knee he suffered at Grangeville heal some more.
Lapwai had eighteen 3-pointers in the game.
There was no JV game as this game had been postponed from Tuesday, Jan. 14 due to snow and turned into a boys-girls varsity only doubleheader as the Prairie girls were already scheduled to play at Lapwai on Thursday.

Vs. Potlatch
Against Potlatch on Friday, Prairie held the lead for most of the first half then got blitzed in the third quarter by the Loggers.Damian Forsmann gets into the lane against Potlatch. Derik Shears can be seen in the background.
Potlatch scored first with a 3-pointer but Prairie answered with a 3-pointer each by Forsmann and Anderson for a 6-3 lead. Shears scored inside to make it 8-3.
A pair of free throws and then a 3-pointer by Schlader had Prairie up 13-8 but the Loggers scored 2 baskets to pull within 1 at 13-12 by the end of the first quarter.
Potlatch scored to open the second quarter and retake the lead but Anderson scored to put Prairie back on top. A free throw and then a basket by the Loggers had them back on top 15-17.
Forsmann hit a 3 to make it 18-17 Prairie and Mager added a basket to make it 20-17. A 3-pointer by Forsmann and a basket by Zach Rambo allowed Prairie to take a 25-23 lead at the half.
In the third quarter things came unraveled for the Pirates. Potlatch’s Brayden Hadaller scored 17 points in the third quarter alone as he went 8 for 8 from the field and Justin Nicholson hit three 3-pointers as Potlatch opened the third quarter with a 0-20 run and outscored Prairie 7-28 in the quarter.
Prairie hit just 3 of 13 shots in the quarter while the Loggers hit 12 of 16.
In the fourth quarter the Loggers connected on 8 of 10 free throws to maintain their 20-point margin and win 43-63.
Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 14 points while Anderson scored 10. Mager and Shears scored 6 each with Schlader scoring 5 and Rambo 2.
Potlatch outrebounded the Pirates 8-20 in the second half as they heled a 25-37 edge for the game. Forsmann had 9 to lead the Pirates.
Mager had 2 steals and 3 assists while Anderson had 2 steals and 2 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 48 from the field, 35%, and 2 for 5 at the line, 40%. Potlatch was 23 for 45 from the field, 51%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 55%.
Prairie won the JV game 65-46.
The game was the reverse of the varsity game as Potlatch led for most of the first half and Prairie took over the game with a dominant third quarter.
Lane Schumacher opened the scoring as Potlatch was called for a pre-game technical as apparently they had the wrong number in the book for one of their players. Schumacher made both free throws but Potlatch outscored Prairie 7-15 the rest of the quarter.
Schumacher scored 7 points in the second quarter and Wyatt Ross added 4 but Prairie still trailed at the half 24-30.
Prairie opened the third quarter with a putback by Tyler Wemhoff and a 3-pointer each by Schumacher and Kyle Schwartz to take their first lead since it was 2-0 at 32-30.
Potlatch tied it with a pair of free throws but Prairie then scored the next 12 points to take control. Schwartz scored the first 7 on 3 baskets plus a free throw. John Gehring scored a pair of baskets and Wemhoff added a free throw to make it 44-32.
Schwartz added a pair of free throws and Shane Hanson a putback as Prairie took a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Potlatch scored first in the fourth quarter then Prairie put together a 17-4 run to put the game away.
Ross scored 8 of those 17 points with Wemhoff adding 4 as Prairie led 65-42 with 1:08 left. Potlatch scored the final 4 points of the game to make it 65-46.
Schwartz had 16 points to lead the scoring with Schumacher scoring 14, Ross 13 and Wemhoff 11 as 4 players were in double figures. Gehring scored 5, Hanson 4 and Travis Alfrey 2.
Rebounding was even at 47 each.  Wemhoff had 14 rebounds to lead the Pirates with Gehring adding 8 and Hanson 7.
Wemhoff, Schumacher and Alfrey each had 4 steals. Schwartz, Wemhoff and Alfrey each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 78 from the field, 33%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 55%. Potlatch was 22 for 52 from the field, 42%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%.
The C team lost their game against St. John Bosco 31-43.

At Orofino
In their third game in 3 days the Pirates got a combined 43 points from first cousins Forsmann and Shears as they won at 76-60 at Orofino.
Shears is the one that got Prairie going in the first quarter with 8 of their 20 first quarter points.
Orofino scored first in the game but that would turn out to be their only lead. Shears scored free throw and then Anderson put Prairie on top for goo with a 3-pointer. A basket and 2 free throws followed from Shears and then Anderson added a basket following a steal by Mager. Mager then closed out the 11-0 run with a free throw.

Prairie then closed out the first quarter with a 7-0 run. Schlader, in his first start in 3 games, sank a 3-pointer then Hasselstrom added a lay-up  and Shears closed out the quarter with a free throw and a lay-up.
Orofino opened the second quarter with a 3 but then Prairie put together a 13-3 run to push the lead to 21 points at 34-13.
Rambo and Hasselstrom each scored a basket then Orofino hit another 3. Prairie then got a layup from Shears, a free throw each from Uhlenkott and Hasselstrom, a basket from Uhlenkott and then a 3 from Forsmann for a 34-13 lead.
Orofino answered with a 0-6 run that was broken by a 3-point play from Forsmann. After an Orofino basket Forsmann sank a long 3-pointer and Wyatt Ross closed out the first half scoring with a lay-up that made it 42-21 at the break.
Forsmann came up with 10 points in the third quarter on two 3’s, a 2-pointer plus 2 free throws as Prairie outscored the Maniacs 20-17 to take a 62-38 lead into the fourth quarter. Shears added 2 baskets and Anderson a 3.
In the fourth quarter Shears scored a pair of free throws to make it 64-38 then Prairie went to the bench.  After Orofino put together a 0-16 run to cut the deficit to 10 points, the starters went back on the floor to stem the rally. Hasselstrom broke the run with a drive to the hoop and Forsmann added a short bank shot.
Orofino scored a pair at the line then Prairie scored 6 straight points to put the lead back at 18 at 74-56 with 1:50 to play. Forsmann scored a 10 foot jumper and Schlader and Shears each hit a pair at the line.
Shears scored Prairie’s final 2 points as they wound up winning by 16.
Forsmann led all scorers with 23 points despite not scoring in the first 12 minutes of the game. Shears added 20 points while Anderson scored 8, Hasselstrom 7, Schlader 6, Uhlenkott 5, Mager 3 and Rambo and Ross 2 each.
Orofino had the rebounding edge 27-34. Mager led the Pirates with 7 rebounds while Shears had 5.
Mager added 6 steals and 7 assists to lead the team in both categories. Forsmann had 4 steals and 3 assists while Anderson had 3 assists also.
Prairie was 26 for 46 from the field, 57%, and 17 for 27 at the line, 63%. Orofino was 24 for 60 from the field, 40%, and 5 for 14 at the line, 36%.
Prairie is now 7-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The JV team also won at Orofino, 52-25.
Schwartz and Gehring each scored 7 points in the first quarter as Prairie jumped out to an 11-4 lead and led 20-8 by the end of the quarter. Ross added 4 points. 
Orofino scored the first 4 of the second quarter then Prairie scored the next 9 for a 29-12 lead. Wemhoff scored 3 and Levi Walsh, Schumacher and Alfrey each scored 2 in that run.
Prairie led 29-14 at the half.
Prairie had runs of 7 and 13 points in the third quarter as they took a 51-20 lead into the fourth quarter. Gehring scored 6 and Schumacher 5 in the quarter with Schwartz and Wemhoff adding 4 each and Ross a 3-pointer.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock with the C players getting most of the floor time. Hanson scored Prairie’s only fourth quarter point as Orofino outscored them 1-5.
For the game Gehring had a double-double to lead the team in both scoring and rebounds with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Schwartz scored 11 with Wemhoff scoring 9. Schumacher and Ross scored 7 each while Alfrey and Walsh scored 2 each and Hanson 1.
Orofino had a big advantage on the boards, 36-44.
Schumacher had 5 steals and 4 assists while Schwartz had 4 steals and Wemhoff 3.
Prairie was 21 for 65 from the field, 32%, and 8 for 17 at the line, 47%. Orofino was 9 for 37 from the field, 24%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%.
