Pirates win 3 of 4
The Prairie Pirates won 3 of 4 games this past week. They started with a 76-61 win over C.V. at Kooskia on Tuesday, Jan. 28. On Wednesday, Jan. 29 they traveled to Troy and pulled out a 70-64 win in overtime. On Friday, Jan. 31 they traveled to Potlatch where they got throttled by the Loggers 26-49. Finally they got in a home game and beat Orofino 80-56 on Monday, Feb. 3.
At C.V.
In the game at C.V.  Prairie dominated 3 of the 4 quarters but a rough second quarter saw them trailing at the half.Sam Mager gets inside for a layup at C.V. Cole Schlader can be seen at left.
Prairie got off to a slow start as C.V. led 4-5 early on. They then went on a 15-4 run to take a 19-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Cole Schlader scored 7 points while Derik Shears had 4. Owen Anderson and Brody Hasselstrom each added a 3-pointer and Sam Mager a basket.
In the second quarter C.V. scored the first 11 points to retake the lead at 19-20. Damian Forsmann sank a 3 to put Prairie back on top. Scoring went back and forth the rest of the half with C.V. taking a 28-30 lead into the break on a buzzer-beater.
The Rams opened the second half scoring and took their biggest lead of the game a 28-32. Anderson answered with a drive to the hoop but C.V. scored again for a 30-34 lead. 
Shears scored inside and a steal by Shears led to a basket by Mager that tied the game. 
After a C.V. free throw, Prairie took the lead for good on a 3 by Forsmann who then added 2 free throws for a 39-35 lead.
C.V. twice cut the lead to 1 but a drive to the hoop by Mager and a 3 by Schlader kept Prairie in the lead. Prairie closed the quarter with an 11-3 run to take a 52-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
A steal by Mager led to a basket by Shears to open the fourth quarter. Hasselstrom added a free throw for a 12-pont lead. C.V. never got closer than 10 the rest of the way. The latest 10-point deficit came at 68-58 but Prairie closed the game with an 8-3 run to win by 15.
Shears and Schlader each scored 16 to lead the Pirates with Forsmann and Mager also hitting double figures with 14 and 10 respectively. Anderson just missed double figures with 9 points. Hasselstrom added 6 while Hayden Uhlenkott scored 3 and Zach Rambo had 2.
C.V. played the entire game with no substitutions. The same 5 guys played all 32 minutes. Tyce Pfefferkorn led the team with 26 points which included five 3-pointers. He didn’t even play in the game at Cottonwood.
Prairie had a 32-26 edge on the boards led by Uhlenkott who had 8 rebounds. Shears added 7 and Anderson had 6.
Schlader and Mager each had 3 steals while Anderson had 5 assists and Shears had 4. Schlader, Mager and Forsmann each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 31 for 53 from the field, 58%, and 8 for 19 at the line, 42%. C.V. was 24 for 51 from the field, 47%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%.
The JV game was just two 8-minute periods due to lack of players for C.V. with Prairie winning 31-20.
An 8-0 run in the first period gave Prairie a 12-6 lead before C.V. hit a 3 to make it 12-9 at the quarter break.
Kyle Schwartz scored 5 in the opening quarter while Shane Hanson scored 3.
In the second period Lane Schumacher started the scoring with a basket but C.V. answered with a 3 to pull within 2points. Prairie then went on a 15-0 run to take control. Tyler Wemhoff scored 7 and Schumacher 6 in that run with John Gehring scoring the other 2 points.
C.V. closed the game with a 2-8 run to cut the final margin to 11.
Schumacher scored 10 to lead the team with Wemhoff adding 7. Schwartz scored 5, Gehring 4, Hanson 3 and Wyatt Ross 2.
Gehring and Wemhoff each had 6 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 25-19 edge on the boards.
Wemhoff had 5 steals and Ross had 2 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 40 from the field, 33%, and 3 for 8 at the line, 38%. C.V. was 8 for 17 from the field, 47%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%.

At Troy
The Pirates led by as many as 12 points during regulation at Troy but had to come from behind to force overtime where they outscored Troy 10-4 to pull out a league win.
Cole Schlader makes a pass in the game at Troy where he scored 33 points in an overtime win.The game was a rare Wednesday game due to rescheduling of a snow cancelled game that was to have been played on Jan. 11.
Prairie jumped out  to a 7-2 lead on a 3 by Schlader and a basket each by Shears and Schlader. Troy came right back with 6 straight to take their first lead at 7-8. 
2 free throws by Schlader put Prairie back on top and a basket by Schlader after a steal by Anderson made it 11-8. After a Troy basket, Mager closed out the first quarter with a pair of baskets to make it 15-10.
Schlader and Forsmann each scored 8 points in the second quarter as Prairie led by as many as 12 points at 30-18. Forsmann had a pair of 3’s plus 2 free throws while Schlader had a 3, 2 baskets and a free throw. Troy pulled back within 8 by halftime at 36-28.
Prairie led 40-30 in the third quarter after 2 free throws by Shears but Troy then reeled off 10 straight points to tie the game. A 3 by Schlader put Prairie back on top. After a Troy free throw Forsmann hit a 3 for a 46-41 lead. A 3 plus a 2 by Troy again tied the score at 46 with 40 seconds left in the quarter.
Schlader drove to the hoop and converted a 3-point play for a 49-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Schlader converted another 3-point play to open the fourth. Troy answered back though and pulled within 1 at 54-53. After a basket by Anderson, Troy tied it with a 3 and then took the lead with a basket.
Mager scored a free throw to cut the lead to 1. Troy answered with 2 free throws for a 57-60 lead with 2:33 left. With 1:49 left Schlader connected from 3 to tie the game at 60-60. Both teams had chances in the final minute and a half but neither team was able to convert as the game went into over time.
Schlader scored 33 seconds into overtime to give Prairie the lead. Troy made 1 free throw to cut the lead to 1 but Forsmann answered with a 3 and Shears added a free throw for a 5-point lead.
Troy scored 2 free throws to pull back within 3 but a pair of baskets by Forsmann gave Prairie a 70-63 lead with 12 seconds left.  Troy added a free throw with 1.1 seconds left to cut the final margin to 6.
Schlader scored 33 points to lead the Pirates with Forsmann adding 18. Forsmann had 8 of those points in overtime. Mager scored 8, Shears 7 and Anderson and Hasselstrom 2 each.
Troy was led by Grayson Foster with 22 points. They were also missing a starter as Zachary Stoner was battling an illness.
Troy had a 39-42 edge on the boards. Shears had 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates with Forsmann adding 9.
Schlader had 4 steals while Mager, Forsmann and Anderson had 2 each. Mager had 4 assists to lead the team.
Prairie was 25 for 63 from the field, 40%, and 12 for 24 at the line, 50%. Troy was 24 for 58 from the field, 41%, and 10 for 16 at the line 63%.
Prairie won the JV game 62-24.
The Pirates jumped out to an 11-0 lead to open the game and led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. Brody Hasselstrom scored 5 and Schwartz 4 to lead the scoring.
Hasselstrom added 7 more in the second quarter as Prairie built the lead to 30-13.
In the third quarter Hanson scored 6 and Schumacher 5 as the Pirates took a 48-24 lead into the fourth quarter. 
Prairie outscored Troy in the fourth 14-0 as Wemhoff scored 6 points and Ross added 4. 
Hasselstrom wound up as the leading scorer with 12 points even though he only played the first half. Schumacher scored 11 with Wemhoff, Gehring and Hanson adding 8 points each. Ross scored 7, Schwartz 6 and Travis Alfrey 2.
Prairie edged Troy 39-35 on the boards with Gehring leading the way with 11 rebounds for Prairie. Hanson added 9 boards.
Gehring had 6 steals while Ross and Schwartz had 4 each. Schwartz had 5 assists and Gehring had 3.
Prairie was 27 for 82 from the field, 33%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Troy was 16 for 28 from the field, 57%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%. 
A major factor was turnovers as Prairie had just 10 compared to 34 for Troy.

At Potlatch
The Pirates ran into a buzzsaw at Potlatch on the Loggers’ senior night.  Potlatch only has seniors on their varsity roster so everyone was honored before the game.
The Loggers came out in an aggressive man defense and made sure Prairie’s outside shooters didn’t get a clean look on their shots.
The Pirates wound up scoring just 1 basket each in the first and second quarter, both lay-ups, plus 5 of 8 free throws for just 9 first half points.
Potlatch led 0-5 before Shears drove in for a basket. They were up 13-2 before Schlader got on the board with 2 free throws. Prairie trailed 4-19 at the quarter break.
They were down 4-23 when Hasselstrom busted down the floor for a lay-up following a Potlatch score. Anderson added 2 free throws and Schlader 1 as Prairie trailed 9-33 at the half.
Prairie scored 2 baskets in the third quarter, 1 each by Mager and Hasselstrom, but continued to lose ground to the Loggers as they trailed 17-44 after 3 quarters.
Prairie was down 17-48 in the fourth when Forsmann finally got on the board with a basket. That kicked off a 9-0 Prairie run that was capped by the Pirates only 3-pointer of the game with 2:01 left. Schlader scored that 3, then quickly picked up his 5th foul.
The only scoring in the final 2 minutes was a Potlatch free throw.
Shears wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 6 points. Schlader and Hasselstrom scored 5 each. Mager and Anderson scored 4 each and Forsmann scored 2.
Potlatch also dominated the boards 26-46. Shears led the Pirates with 10 rebounds.
Four different players had 1 steal each and Schlader had 3 assists.
Prairie was 7 for 42 from the field, 17%, and 11 for 17 at the line, 65%. Potlatch was 18 for 45 from the field, 40%, and 11 for 23 at the line, 48%. 
Prairie won the JV game 55-39.
The Pirates led just 8-6 after one quarter with Gehring scoring 4 for the Pirates. 
It was 20-17 at the half with Schumacher scoring 5 and Wemhoff 4 in the quarter. 
In the third quarter Prairie took a 32-21 lead with a 12-2 run only to give most of the lead back as Potlatch closed the quarter with a 1-10 run to cut the lead to just 2, 33-31.
Prairie scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter though and dominated the final period to win by 16. Wemhoff scored 6 points in the fourth quarter while Schumacher and Gehring scored 4 each and Schwartz and Zach Rambo 3 each as the Pirates outscored Potlatch 22-8 in the final frame.
Wemhoff and Gehring wound up with 12 points each to lead the JV’s in scoring. Schumacher scored 9, Rambo 8, Ross 6, Schwartz 5 and Hanson 3.
Rebounds were even at 32 each. Gehring had 14 to lead the Pirates.
Gehring also led in steals with 4 and Schwartz had 4 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 54 from the field, 43%, and 7 for 17 at the line, 41%. Potlatch was 17 for 41 from the field, 41%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%.

Vs. Orofino
Prairie outscored Orofino 19-11 in the third quarter to break open what was a 4-point game at the half. They continued in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Maniacs 29-17 to pull away for a 24 point win.Hayden Uhlenkott drives to the hoop against Orofino.
Anderson got Prairie off to a strong start with their first 4 points and 8 points in the first quarter. Shears added 6 in the quarter but Prairie went into the second period with a slim 21-17 advantage.
In the second quarter Prairie led by as many as 9 at 29-20 but Orofino was able to cut that lead down to 3 with a minute to play at 31-28 after a 3-pointer.
Shears scored a free throw with 17 seconds left for a 32-28 lead at the half.
Schlader heated up in the third quarter. He had just 4 first half points but scored 11 in the third including a pair of 3-pointers as Prairie led by as many as 12 at 43-31 and at the end of the quarter at 51-39.
An 8-2 run to open the fourth quarter extended the lead to 59-41 with Schlader scoring 6 of those 8 points on a scoop off the glass, 2 free throws and a short jumper.
Orofino answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 11 but a deep 3 by Forsmann kicked off a 12-3 run that put Prairie up by 20 at 71-51 with 3 minutes to play.
Orofino got the lead down to 17 but the Pirates scored the final 7 points to win by 24.
Schlader wound up with 25 points, 21 in the second half. Shears added 19 with Anderson scoring 13. Hasselstrom scored 9 with Forsmann scoring 6, Uhlenkott 5 and Mager 3.
Orofino had a 39-46 edge on the boards. Shears had a double-double with 10 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Forsmann had 3 steals with 6 other Pirates making 1 steal each. Forsmann and Schlader had 5 assists each.
The Pirates were 31 for 65 from the field, 48%, and 13 for 21 at the line, 62%. Orofino was 23 for 68 from the field, 34%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%.
Prairie is now 11-6 on the season and 6-4 in league play.
The JV team won their game 67-54.
Prairie dominated the first quarter as they jumped out to an 18-4 lead. Gehring scored 5 points while Ross and Rambo added 4 each.
The two teams played even in the second quarter with Orofino keeping up by outscoring Prairie 0-10 at the free throw line as each team scored 18 points in the quarter. Wemhoff and Schumacher scored 5 each for Prairie in the quarter with Gehring and Colton McElroy adding 4 each.
Orofino was able to cut the lead down to 9 at 46-37 with 1:28 left in the third quarter but Gehring scored 5 points and Schwartz 3 in an 8-0 run to end the quarter as Prairie took a 54-37 lead into the fourth.
Prairie built their lead to as many as 20 at 61-41 in the fourth before coasting to the finish to win by 13.
Gehring had a double-double to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ross scored 12 and Schumacher 10 with Schwartz scoring 9, Wemhoff 7, Rambo and McElroy 4 each, Hanson 3 and Levi Walsh and Morgan Poxleitner 2 each.
Prairie had a 52-45 edge on the boards.
Ross had 4 steals while Schumacher and Travis Alfrey had 3 each. Schumacher had 7 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 79 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 23at the line, 26%. Orofino was 20 for 50 from the field, 40%, and 13 for 22 at the line, 59%.
