Pirates win at Kamiah
The Prairie Pirates gained a split in the season series with Kamiah by winning 50-39 at Kamiah Friday, Feb. 7.
Kamiah came out strong in the opening quarter as Jace Sams scored 9 first quarter points to lead the Kubs to a 13-18 lead by the end of the period.
Prairie turned things around in the second quarter though with their defense as they held the Kubs to 1 for 12 shooting and just 2 points as they rallied to take a 24-20 lead by halftime.Derik Shears looks to shoot against Kamiah. The Pirates won 50-39 clinching the #3 seed into District.
Prairie started the quarter with a 6-0 run to take their first lead since it was 1-0. Sam Mager made 1 of 2 free throws then Derick Shears scored on a drive to the hoop. Shears added a free throw 20 seconds later then Cole Schlader put Prairie into the lead with a drive to the hoop.
Kamiah briefly took back the lead on a basket by Sams but Schlader answered by hitting 2 of 3 free throws when he was fouled on a 3-point try that Kamiah fans thought was a flop. Zach Rambo then closed out the first half scoring with a 3-pointer for a 24-20 halftime lead.
Kamiah scored a basket and a 3-pointer to retake the lead in the third quarter. Schlader tied it with a free throw then Kamiah scored 2 at the line to retake the lead.
Shears tied it with a basket inside but Kamiah answered with 2 more free throws. A 3 by Schlader made it 30-29 but Kamiah answered with a lay-up to lead 30-31.
A basket each by Shears, on a turnaround, and Rambo on a drive to the hoop, gave Prairie a 34-31 lead at the end of the quarter.
Kamiah tied it on a 3-pointer by Titus Oatman to open the fourth quarter but Prairie took the lead for good with a 9-0 run. Mager drove to the hoop for a basket then Damian Forsmann hit a 3-pointer. Schlader scored on a midrange jumper and Forsmann added a transition basket off a feed from Brody Hasselstrom who made a defensive rebound and triggered the break.
Oatman made another 3 to end the run but Shears answered with a basket. 
Kamiah scored their final points with 1:10 left to cut the lead to 6 but Prairie ended the game by making 5 straight points, all on free throws, for an 11-point win.
Schlader wound up with 14 points to lead all scorers. Shears and Forsmann each added 11 points while Mager and Rambo each scored 5. Owen Anderson scored 3 and Hayden Uhlenkott 1.
Prairie had a 38-25 advantage on the boards after it was even up at 14-all at halftime. Shears had 12 rebounds to lead the team while Forsman added 7 and Anderson 6.
Mager, Uhlenkott and Shears each had 2 steals while Hasselstrom had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 41 from the field, 39%, and 14 for 26 at the line, 54%. Kamiah was 15 for 50 from the field, 30%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%.
Prairie is now 12-6 on the season and 7-4 in league play. They finish their regular season this Friday at Cottonwood against Lapwai.
With the win Prairie has clinched the #3 seed into District and will play the #6 seed, Genesee, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The JV team also won, 58-47.
Like the varsity, the JV squad trailed at the end of the first quarter. Prairie took a 5-2 lead but then gave up 11 straight points to fall behind 5-13. They outscored Kamiah the rest of the quarter, 7-2, to trail 12-15 at the end of the period. Kyle Schwartz scored 5 and Lane Schumacher 4 in the quarter.
Prairie opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run. The first 4 were by John Gehring who had a basket and 2 free throws. Schumacher then hit a 3 to make it 19-15.
Kamiah came back to take a 21-24 lead but another 3 by Schumacher tied it at 24. After a Kamiah basket, Prairie took the lead on a lay-up by Schwartz and a putback by Gehring. Kamiah closed the half with a 3-pointer that gave them a 28-29 lead at the break.
Wyatt Ross opened the second half with a drive to the hoop that put Prairie on top. Kamiah answered with 2 free throws. Tyler Wemhoff scored a basket and Travis Alfrey added 2 free throws to put Prairie up 34-31.
Kamiah cut the lead to 1 but a basket each by Alfrey and Levi Walsh made it 38-33.
A 0-7 run by Kamiah put the Kubs back on top 38-40. Wemhoff scored a putback to tie it and Ross a free throw for the lead. Ross then added a basket to put Prairie up 43-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Prairie never trailed again. Ross opened the fourth quarter with a basket on an inbounds play. After that Kamiah closed within 3 points 3 different times but couldn’t get any closer. The last time was at 50-47 and Prairie then got a 3-pointer each from Ross and Schumacher to quickly put the lead at 9. Schwartz then close out the scoring with a lay-up with 1:00 left to play.
Schumacher led the scoring with 16 points as he connected on four 3-pointers. Gehring added 11 and Ross 10. All of Ross’ points were in the second half. Schwartz scored 9 with Wemhoff and Alfrey adding 4 each. Shane Hanson and Walsh each scored 2.
Kamiah edged Prairie on the boards 34-35. Wemhoff had 10 to lead the Pirates.
Ross had 5 steals while Wemhoff had 4. Wemhoff had 5 assists and Ross had 3.
Prairie was 22 for 62 from the field, 35%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 67%. Kamiah was 19 for 45 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.

Cole Schlader, Hayden Uhlenkott and Zach Rambo play defense against Kamiah in the second quarter when they held the Kubs to just 2 points after giving up 18 in the first quarter.

Cole Schlader shows some serious hops as he shoots a jumper from 3-point range. He got fouled on the play and made 2 of the ensuing 3 free throws to put Prairie ahead at that point.
