Pirates lose 2 of 3 at District
The Prairie Pirates had their season come to an end Monday, Feb. 24 at the hands of Kamiah at the District Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center. On Tuesday, Feb. 18 they held off Genesee for a 52-45 win. On Wednesday, Feb. 19 they lost to Lapwai 35-58 in a game that clinched a trip to State for the Wildcats. On Monday, Feb. 24 they lost to Kamiah 59-65 to end their season.
Vs. Genesee
Each time the Pirates have played Genesee the games have gotten closer. They won by 31 the first time and by 13 the second time. Cole Schlader puts up a shot against Genesee at District. Also shown is Brody Hasselstrom.
This time Genesee came out with more energy than the Pirates and dominated the boards 3-10 in the opening period.  Prairie scored first on a free throw by Sam Mager. A putback by Derik Shears and a driving lay-up by Owen Anderson had Prairie up 5-4.
Genesee then scored 4 straight points and led the rest of the first quarter although Prairie twice got within 1 after baskets by Cole Schlader and Anderson. Prairie trailed 9-12 at the end of the quarter.
Schlader made 2 free throws to pull the Pirates within 1 early in the second quarter. Genesee answered with a 3-pointer.
A basket each by Brody Hasselstrom and Mager tied the score at 15 but Genesee then scored 6 straight points.
Hayden Uhlenkott broke the run with a putback and Hasselstrom got the Pirates within 2 with 2 free throws. 
After a Genesee basket, Zach Rambo cut the lead to just 1 with a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left in the half. The score at halftime was 22-23.
Damian Forsmann, who was shut out in the first half, opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer to give Prairie their first lead since midway through the first quarter. Schlader then scored on an inbounds feed from Anderson to make it 27-23.
Genesee put together a 0-7 run to retake the lead but a 3 by Forsmann tied it at 30. 1:20 later, Forsmann hit another 3 to put Prairie back on top. Shears closed out the third quarter scoring with a lay-up after Anderson made an offensive rebound and fed him the ball. That made the score 35-30.
Shears opened the fourth quarter with a basket and Anderson added a free throw for an 8-point lead.
Genesee scored but Shears answered when he putback a missed free throw to make it 40-32.
Genesee scored again but Prairie responded with a 6-0 run.
Shears scored when Schlader drove under the basket and passed out to him for a lay-up. Shears scored again on a drive to the hoop and Schlader made it 46-34 when he banked in a shot with 2:30 to play.
Genesee broke the run with a 3-pointer but 2 free throws by Schlader and a free throw by Forsmann put the lead back to 12 at 49-37 with 1:19 left.
Genesee connected on back to back 3’s to cut the lead in half.
With 39 seconds left Schlader made the second of 2 free throws in a double bonus situation.
Genesee then made 2 free throws to pull within 5 but Schlader scored on a drive to the hoop with 20 seconds left to end the scoring.
Schlader wound up with 13 points to lead the Pirates. Shears scored 12, 8 in the fourth quarter, and Forsmann had 10, with 9 in the third quarter. Anderson scored 5, Hasselstrom 4, Mager and Rambo 3 each and Uhlenkott 2.
Genesee wound up with a 29-38 edge on the boards. Shears had 7 to lead the Pirates while Forsmann and Uhlenkott had 5 each.
Anderson had 2 steals and 5 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 42 from the field, 45%, 6 for 10 in the fourth quarter, and 10 for 18 at the line, 56%. Genesee was 18 for 53 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%.

Vs. Lapwai
Just like the Senior Night game a few days earlier, Prairie led Lapwai at the end of the first quarter and then were dominated the rest of the game.Sam Mager drives past Lapwai’s Kross Taylor.
Lapwai jumped out to a 0-7 lead in the game but Prairie came back with a 6-0 run. Anderson opened the scoring with a basket after a steal by Mager. Forsmann then hit a 3-pointer and Schlader a free throw to make it 6-7.
After a Lapwai basket, Forsmann and Mager each scored a basket for a 10-9 lead at the end of the opening period.
Lapwai scored 2 free throws to open the second quarter and Prairie took back the lead when Mager scored on an inbounds pass from Anderson.
Lapwai then went on a 0-15 run and that was pretty much all she wrote. Rambo scored a pair of baskets to break the run and get Prairie back within 10 but Lapwai scored the final 7 points of the half to lead 16-33 at the break.
Forsmann had a big third quarter for Prairie as he scored 9 points but Lapwai outscored the Pirates 13-16 to take a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter at 29-49.
Prairie was held to 6 points in the fourth quarter, a 3-pointer and a free throw by Rambo and 2 free throws by Mager.
Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 14 points. Mager and Rambo scored 8 points each while Schlader scored 3 and Anderson scored 2. 
Titus Yearout led Lapwai with 16 points while Kross Taylor had 14.
Prairie had a 39-37 edge on the boards. Shears had 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates while Mager had 8.
Shears, Anderson and Schlader each had 3 assists in the game while 5 different players had 1 steal each.
Prairie was 14 for 53 from the field, 26%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%. Lapwai was 19 for 55 from the field, 35%, and 14 for 14 at the line.

Vs. Kamiah
The Kamiah Kubs made 18 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a Pirates rally and claim the win in a loser-out game Monday.
Prairie started well as they jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 11-4. Shears scored 6 of those 11 points while Schlader had the other 5 which included a 3-pointer.
Then foul troubles started. Shears, Schlader and Mager all picked up their second foul leading the Pirates to go to their bench a little deeper than you’d like in the first quarter. 
Kamiah rode the shooting of Sam Brisbois, who scored 11 points in the quarter, and a 5 for 6 performance at the line to pull into a 12-12 tie. Schlader scored on a drive to the hoop but Brisbois answered to make it 14-14 after one.
Kamiah opened the second quarter with 7 straight points before Rambo connected on a 3. Kamiah kept scoring as Brisbois added another 9 points in the quarter and Brady Cox added 6 as Kamiah built their lead to 9 points at 20-29.
Prairie then put their own rally together to close out the half. Mager sank 2 free throws and Forsmann scored after a steal to cut the lead to 5. Brisbois scored then Forsmann connected on a 3 to cut the lead to 4. Schlader and Mager each sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at 31-31 with 1:55 left in the half.
Neither team scored for the next 1:20. Brisbois hit 1 of 2 free throws with 33 seconds left to give Kamiah a 31-32 halftime lead.
Kamiah opened the second half with a 3 from Jace Sams  but Prairie tied it as Shears and Forsmann each scored a basket. Kavan Mercer scored for Kamiah then Prairie took the lead on a pair of baskets by Shears with 3:34 left in the quarter. Prairie then went cold and Kamiah ended the quarter with a 0-6 run to take a 39-43 lead into the fourth.
Shears scored twice in the fourth quarter, each time pulling the Pirates within 2 points, the second at 43-45.
Kamiah then started going to the free throw line hitting 13 of 16 free throws in a 4-13 run that put them up 47-58 with 1:38 to play.
Prairie went to 3-point shooting but were only partially successful as Forsmann hit 3 of 6 attempts but Kamiah kept answering at the line, limiting the gains Prairie was able to make as the Pirates could get no closer than 6 points.
Forsmann wound up with 21 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Shears added 16 despite foul trouble that saw him foul out with 2:02 to play. Schlader scored 11, Mager 5 and Uhlenkott and Rambo 3 each. Schlader, Mager and Anderson also wound up fouling out.
Prairie had a 35-30 edge on the boards lead by Shears who had 9 rebounds. Mager added 8 boards.
Schlader had 3 steals and Anderson had 4 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 56 from the field, 38%, and 11 for 17 at the line, 65%. Kamiah was 17 for 42 from the field, 40%, and 27 for 36 at the line, 75%. Prairie was whistled for 29 fouls while Kamiah had 19.
Prairie ends their season with a record of 13-9 and ends a streak of 6 straight state appearances. Oddly, the last time Prairie did not go to state in 2013, it was also Kamiah that ended their season.
